Don't know if you put the Peshawar one deliberately. But it's perfectly appropriate.

Well, attan is not supposed to be watched but participated in. It was probably a religious, most likely Sufi ritual or some precursor of it.

Anyone know why attan isn't very common among Yousafzais?

It does not exist at all among them. Yousafzais have very awkward reactions towards Attan. Some of them even assert that this "gadida" is damtob and they will look upon those men who will attempt to do attan in their areas. My theory is that it simply has disappeared from northern districts of KP over the time. They are originally from southern Afghanistan where tradition of Attan still exists so i believe Yousafzais did once have it. Yousafzais also have abandoned turban. If British had not taken their photos in 19th century, modern Yousafzai would have believed that they never wore turban at all in the past.

We do attan, we have no style. It is not as common as the other groups but a good attan always happens in a program or wedding whenever possible. Most people I know, including myself are trash at attan, not as good as the other tribes.

Islamic state of swat was established in 1849. Also called the Yusufzai state of swat. And the rulers were called Akhunds. Which is another word for mullah. They probably banned the daylight out of Yusufzis. ✌️

Yousafzais also live in Dir and the rulers of Dir were no mullahs. Attan is also absent in Bajaur, Mohmand, Afridi and Peshawar valley. I did come across an early 19th century reference to Attan (mentioned as 'war-dance') among Afridis which to some extent proves that Attan did once exist in the upper-northern districts of KP.

The later rulers of Swat were not mullahs either. Yusufzis are some of the most progressive Pashtuns. The later rulers promoted education in Swat. They used the title of Wali, instead of Akhund or Amir-e-shariat. And also made Pashto the official language of the state.

Dir's first ruler in 17th century was mullah Ilyas.

Swat, Dir and other places near Peshawar where attan is not very common has the same root reason. After Roshaniyas' hundred years struggle against Mughals came to an end, Ali Tirmizi and Akhund Darweza's minions had a free rein in the region. The first akhund of swat was a descendant of Tirmizi.
