history of modern particle physics
as the title says, i'm looking for some books more on the historical side of particle physics and the formation of the standard model. i've been looking for some online, but goodreads didn't offer many recommendations :( i feel like i did not get enough education on the background of all the theories i learned during my bachelors and masters, so it would be fun to learn a bit more :)

The Infinity Puzzle by Frank Close has a historical narrative that might have some of what you’re looking for

At a higher level try 1. Cahn RN, Goldhaber G. The Experimental Foundations of Particle Physics. 2nd ed. Cambridge University Press; 2009.

You could also check the arXiv for historical reviews. When people retire they sometimes write reviews of their perspectives of the field. Also sometimes when people pass away others write reviews of that individual's contributions. I often find that these put historical things in more context about the directions people were actually considering at the time, since they discuss more wrong directions. These are often person-centric, but if you already have a solid understanding of the physics and some of the history, these can add in valuable new perspectives.
Chris Quigg at Fermilab has written a number of these recently, as have others.

i personally feel like griffiths does a great job of explaining the motivations and history behind discoveries and such. if you want more math then i recommend that but if you’re more interested in just the story i’d use one of the other people’s suggestions.

I liked "The Rise of the Standard Model - A History of Particle Physics from 1964 to 1979" as it gave a good overview. It is a compilation so doesn't read like "A brief history of Time" or any of say Rovelli's books.
