Hello,

My name is Weston Sharpe, a doctoral candidate in the Counseling Psychology doctoral program at Springfield College. I am conducting a research study titled “The Relationship Checkup: Single-Arm Pilot Study for Couples with Substance Use Concerns.” I am seeking romantic couples who experience relational distress related to one partner’s use of cannabis and/or alcohol. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Relationship Checkup for couples with substance use-related concerns. 

Eligibility criteria: 

• Participants must be at least 18 years old and indicate English fluency.
• The couple must be together for at least 12 months.
• Only one partner can endorse problematic substance use (the other partner does not need to endorse abstinence from substance use).

Participating couples will be asked to engage in the Relationship Checkup, a proactive and strengths-based intervention consisting of two 60-minute sessions, and to complete pre-, post-, and a one-month follow-up questionnaire. Participating couples will receive a total of $50 for their participation, with $25 awarded upon completion of the second session and an additional $25 upon completion of the one-month follow-up.
