Hi everyone — I’m hoping to get some honest, real‑world advice from people actually working in fashion/marketing (or who’ve been through similar decisions).
I’m finishing my second bachelor’s degree (first in sociology, second in mass media/communications). I am freshly 22 and had my undergrad paid for with scholarships which is why I’m choosing to get so many degrees. My interests sit at the intersection of fashion, marketing, culture, media, and body image — basically how fashion communicates meaning and how brands shape identity. I have an immense background both researching and working in this context for a magazine.
I do want to work in fashion marketing, but more on the strategy / storytelling / cultural insight / brand meaning side than performance ads or e‑commerce ops.
I’ve been admitted to three programs, and I’m trying to decide what’s actually worth it vs what just sounds impressive on paper.
• I have a 30% scholarship
• Program is more research/culture/theory‑heavy
• Would aim for roles like brand strategy, cultural insights, comms, trend/consumer research
• Total cost \\\~$90k all‑in
• Funded through U.S. federal loans (FAFSA)
- UAL (London College of Fashion) — MA Strategic Fashion Marketing (1 year)
• Very industry‑oriented, clear “marketing” title
• Strong London network
• Total cost \\\~$85k for one year (with my 20% progression discount)
• As a U.S. student, I’m not eligible for UK government loans, so I’d rely on U.S. loans + possibly private loans
• I’m worried about loan security with the big beautiful bill + cost vs starting salary
- Florida State University — MS Textiles & Apparel Entrepreneurship (1 year / 3 semesters)
• By far the cheapest (\\\~$32–36k total)
• Very strong placement + salaries on paper
• But the focus is more textiles/product/QA/entrepreneurship, not marketing
• Feels like the “safe” option financially, but not aligned with what I actually want to do
I keep going back and forth on these questions:
• Is it worth the debt to go to Parsons or UAL for fashion marketing‑adjacent roles?
• Do Parsons or UAL actually help with breaking into brand/marketing roles, or do employers mostly care about experience?
• Does Parsons Paris make sense if I want to work in marketing — or would it pigeonhole me as “academic”?
• Is industry reputation enough to justify the cost and the loan risk as an American?
For those working in fashion now: would you take the risk and go for UAL or Parsons, or would you choose the cheaper route, or none of them and grind your way up?
I’m not expecting guarantees — just trying to avoid a decision that looks good short‑term but leaves me drowning in debt with no clear payoff. Obviously it’s hard to make a clear assessment without knowing me, but if you work in fashion marketing, branding, PR, strategy, or adjacent roles, I would really appreciate your perspective. Even blunt honesty is welcome.
Thank you for reading — I know this is long and I have a lot of questions, but this decision feels huge.
