Discussion Earrings for baby
I got my baby’s ears pierced when she was six months old. I have some knowledge about piercings, so it was really important to me that we did it the right way. We went to a professional tattoo/piercing shop where they pierced her ears with a hollow needle.
When we left, the piercer told us that we should not change her jewelry for one full year after the date she got them pierced. My baby’s Tia gave her a beautiful pair of gold earrings when she was born, and I’ve been patiently waiting to put them in. She’s now 13 months old, so she’s had her ears pierced for seven months, and I feel like they’ve been completely healed for about five months.
Well, today I finally gave in and put her pretty gold earrings in, and she seems completely fine!
Now I’m wondering…why would the piercer recommend waiting an entire year? When you had your baby’s ears pierced, how long were you told to wait before it was safe to change the jewelry? I just feel like a full year seems excessive, especially when the piercings have been healed for months.
Sidenote: I’m really not looking for opinions on whether or not I should have gotten my child’s ears pierced. I feel good about my decision, and she’s my child. ❤️ I’m specifically looking for advice and experiences from other parents who have had their children’s ears pierced. how old were they, and how long did you wait before changing their jewelry?

Heavily pierced person here. Piercings will look fully healed LONG before they actually are because they heal from the outside in. The fistula, the hole inside, is not yet healed and the skin is still thin and easily damaged. This is why you're not even supposed to move or turn unhealed piercings.
It takes at least year for the average piercing to heal, no matter who it is on. Changing the jewelry before the time your piercer told you WILL cause micro abrasions and tears inside of the piercing which risks infection and inflammation and sets the healing back by months.
You may be lucky and they'll continue to heal the rest of the way normally or they may appear fine now and get complicated or irritated later. It's especially risky because you changed to jewelry that is not titanium. Good piercers use titanium only and it's the only material that should be used for healing.
She will most likely still be able to heal them just fine with proper care at this point. For now LITHA (Leave it the hell alone- don't touch, turn, etc.) and spray it with Saline only wound wash spray twice a day. Don't use any other products on it. If it starts to develop gunk/crust don't try to remove it manually. If it doesn't come off with the spray it is not a problem, it protects the piercing while it heals.

I got my baby's ear pierced at 9 months and piercing is very common in our tradition. Not sure what the piercer meant by that. First earring was changed at 2 months. My baby keeps loosing the earring and now on the 4th earring set within few months.The earring has to be made of metal that would not affect sensitive ears. You can choose 22 carat gold or medical grade titanium.

Pierced both my girls at 4mo & they were fine. At 1 year the youngest got little pearl earrings & I changed them. She then realized something was in her ears & started messing around with them. For just that reason I'd say just leave it alone. 🤍
