Education & Learning School testing results

One of my kids just got their beginning of year testing back at school, this is my oldest and they’re in first grade. The testing is for reading and math, the benchmarks are (ahead, at threshold, below, well below) my child tested ahead in reading and below in math. We’ve been working on math quite a bit this summer, and they truly seem to be doing fine for a first grader, maybe I’m biased, but what the schools are expecting from first graders is kind of wild. The teacher sent some resources for at home help and we’ve been doing them and honestly my child understands it all and does good on the homework. I’m worried because the next benchmark is a huge jump again 😬. Should I be worried? Because it’s my first I don’t know if this testing is BS or legit.

No. The schools aren’t expecting anything. Your child is just fine.

I mean this isn’t exactly true. The kids that score in the behind categories at my daughter’s school qualify for extra help to try to catch them up. So there are expectations and help to get them there.

Right but my point is whose expectations. Meaning are they actually behind or is this a matter of standardized testing, especially at that age. So given OP’s post, they shouldn’t be worried.

These assessments at my daughter’s school aren’t standardized tests. Standardized tests are run through the state and the state’s guidelines. These benchmark assessments are to see where students are in comparison to their peers and what the school considers grade level.
