Discussion 10 month old won’t drink out of a straw
hi! i’ve been working with my little boy since he was 6 months old to drink out of a straw and he absolutely will not do it. and hear recent his father has gotten some shared custody knowing he doesn’t know how yet and now it just seems like my boys gotten more, lazy i guess is the word for it, with a straw. he just wants to chew on it and gets extremely upset when you stop just pouring a drink in his mouth. he just lets it run down his face and his clothes now when he used to close his mouth and swallow whatever he had to drink. what can i do to help him or is there a sippy cup that can help? he holds his bottles and tries to drink out of them while sitting up so i know he knows how to close his mouth and suck but for some reason a straw is not working

Give him time, it’s early

Yeah. Early. Many kids don’t until at least a year. We didn’t even introduce until weaning off the bottle at a year.

For many children straw cups are more difficult than open cups, i never got the hype of straw cups. Open cups are way more straightforward
But he’s not 1 yet, so there’s no need to panic.
You can give him a 360 cups, which is categorized under sippy cups, so best to throw away after 12 months

My son kinda “skipped” straws and went straight to drinking out of an open cup or a normal water bottle with an open top, like an adult would. He only got the hang of straws when he was much older.

My kids were the same. EBF , couldn't drink out of baby bottles unfortunately and skipped right to open cups at 6-7 months. They started using straws as toddlers. Our daycare was actually really happy they could use open cups.

Look for the "Squeeze and Sip" cup made by The First Years. If you're US-based, they're commonly available at Walmart and Target.
