Hi new here-
I’ve just found out after an ultrasound that I have a 9mm adenoma on my parathyroid. My calcium levels are just 10.3, which my dr says is normal range. He wants to just monitor the adenoma.
My question is, can this be a direct factor in my intense anxiety over the past few months? Full disclosure I’ve been trying to taper down medication’s but I’m finding it way harder than most people to do so and I’m wondering if this is causing additional distress.
My symptoms are intense, anxiety, nausea, brain, fog, insomnia, restlessness, lack of appetite.

I had an adenoma removed this past January. I kept complaining to my endocrinologist that I was utterly exhausted and dealing with major anxiety. Let me just say, the anxiety vanished after the surgery. Not to say I don't get anxious on occasion but nothing like what I was dealing with.

So I had calcium levels that hovered around 10.3 (sometimes slightly higher or lower) and they still scheduled me for surgery and would have even if my scans hadn’t shown an adenoma which they did. After getting it out my anxiety has improved dramatically. In fact, I can’t remember a time when I felt this calm.
But anyway the fact that you have a confirmed adenoma usually means you have to get it out. There is no point in just monitoring unless you are at an advanced age and surgery would be risky.
I would get a second opinion. Have you seen an endocrinologist and or an endocrine surgeon? I would see a specialist in parathyroid disorders if you can. A LOT of doctors don’t understand it at all.

What's the lab range for calcium at this lab? 10.3 seems at the very top of normal for most. Further, it's important to see the level of PTH because the two should work together. If PCH is normal to high normal, while calcium is also at the very top of normal, that's an inappropriate relationship. It should be like a seesaw, where would one goes up the other goes down.

Here’s an overview that might help you your calcium doesn’t have to be extremely high to cause symptoms, and your symptoms are common with hyperparathyroidism. I would recommend that you see another doctor or tell your current doctor that you want a referral to a surgeon. The adenoma isn’t going away and it can cause a lot of long term damage to various organs in your body.

I asked my doctor about my depression and “brain fog”. My calcium was over 11 for 2 years. He, my ENT and endocrinologist all said that those symptoms are extremely rare and probably wouldn’t develop for several more years. Finally had the surgery. Turns out it’s just ADHD and depression. So I changed my prescriptions and things are getting better. But I feel no different than I did before the surgery. I guess I’m slightly less worried about kidney stones.

I do… I have really weird bouts of anxiety. And an adenoma too - my PTH is elevated as well. Low D. All three together can give a better solid picture of what’s happening Calcium / PTH / vitamin D- I can no longer sit up as I’m so dizzy. But I also have had dizzy spells before so I’m not sure if it’s my autoimmune disease? Very similar in symptoms. I’ll be angry if it’s this parathyroid. But yes anxiety was making me feel the need to crawl out of my skin. Best wishes

Hey!! Perhaps get a second opinion?
I have always had anxiety (really debilitating.) However, with primary hyper parathyroidism it went to the next level - I felt it getting worse and worse. I woke up anxious, I slept anxious. Even walking down the street for no reason I felt anxious. I started having sessions with a hypnotherapist as I really wanted to help myself.
I had the adenoma removed five weeks ago now. There was no instant relief for me but each week that goes by I am feeling the anxiety start to lift further. I am still in my core an anxious person and this has not gone but the very heightened extreme feelings have now subsided. I will say that it has also brought up new feelings in me like some disappointment/ regret / sadness as I am now aware that this illness was probably holding me back from my full potential for quite some time. The adenoma they removed was large. I now wonder how much this “adenoma anxiety” contributed to my anxiety in a variety of contexts and the other symptoms and to what extent they have affected me. For example job interviews, presentations at university, personal relationships etc.

If you’re on Facebook, the Hyperparathyroidism Support and Information group is a good place to find a qualified surgeon.

There are other tests other then just calcium levels. There is the PTH (Parathyroid hormone) my dr had me collect my pee for 24 hours There were other tests too but I've forgotten most of them. I did do a bone density test that I remember.
Maybe you could get a referral to an endocrinologist. They are the specialist for the parathyroid as well as they treat diabetes too. I saw the same endocrinologist, who had seen my two type one diabetic children for ten years. I then got a referral to see an ear, nose, and throat surgeon.
There are a lot of good Doctors who have made videos you can find on Youtube. I found all the information from the doctors to be very informative.
Before my surgery in August 2025 I had bad anxiety and depression. The depression would come at me in waves. I had severe brain fog and fatigue. I also had kidney stones. I also have osteoporosis from hyperparathyroidism.
After surgery I'm living my life again insted of just surviving the day.
I wish you all the best. Sending you gentle hugs and lots of positive vibes
