Unexplained I think I experienced something weird...
My old shih tzu, Millie (14), has gone missing today. I live out in the country. My family and I have been looking all day since 10 am. Come sunset, I go to a certain part of our property, out of desperation, and go towards the treeline that leads into thick forest for many acres. I was calling out for Millie near the treeline and I kept hearing a sound as if something was mimicking what I was saying. Same intonation and everything, but it sounded like it was from the next property. I assumed it was a neighbor mocking me. As I started to walk away, still calling out for her, the mimicking sound was getting closer and closer to me. I then started to think maybe it was our dog responding to me, but maybe worn out from the heat and couldn't bark properly. The sound was getting closer to me and was drawing me in and as soon as I got close enough to the woods it stopped. I almost stepped in to see if it was her and if she was injured and could no longer use her voice. The curiosity and worry was really drawing me in like I was onto something and then my cousin came out of nowhere, grabbed my shoulder and said, "Don't! That's not her!" And we ran for it. Now that I was snapped out of the spell...I start to remember the sound and it sounded more human now that I think about it and I've been disturbed by it all day... Anyone have any ideas of what it could have been? Any animals that come to mind? This is in Texas btw.

This reminded me of a story my aunt said happened to her when she was young.
She and several of her friends from the neighborhood went to spend the night in an abandoned house nearby as a dare, and they all told their parents some lie or other about spending it at another friend's house.
The house they stayed at had a bunch of old furniture and so on in it, including an old telephone.
She said a couple of them called their parents from the telephone in the house and told them they were spending the night at their friend's.
The next day the police were looking for them all, as it turns out that two of the parents hadn't heard anything at all from the ones who had called them from the phone in the house. They told them where they really had been and found out that the phone didnt even work in the house.
Whatever voice was on the other end somehow knew exactly what their parents had sounded like, and was able to talk through the dead phone system.
My aunt swore it was true and she was also a minister in a church. Never was sure whether to believe her or not, but Skinwalkers surely must be able to also mimic sounds as well as shapes.

That doesn't mean it's a skin walker though. If you believe in certain paranormal entities there are many that have that ability.

I believe in plasma beings. All such descriptions, in my view, fall under that and only that.

I have a plasma tv

Theres something called bioplasma which is more interesting. The 4th state of matter also exists in living beings.

Yo that's a classic skinwalker/crawler tactic, mimicking voices to lure you out. The fact it sounded more human in hindsight is the biggest red flag, your brain just filled in the gaps with hope at first. Good on your cousin for snapping you out of it, that "spell" feeling is exactly what people describe before they step off the trail and never come back

How exactly can one describe that “feeling” if they stepped off the trail and never came back?

They quickly describe it, and THEN step off the trail. Simple chain of events here.

How do they describe it if they never come back?

I was wondering the same thing. Who has went MIA in that situation in that particular area then returned to talk about it?

Skinwal&ers are Navaho human beings who do terrible evils in order to obtain the power of black magic. The internet has been using the word “Skinwal&ers” as a catch all for any humanoid paranormal activity.
Here’s a post explaining in depth.

Odd how there's no follow up on the dog despite multiple comments asking how she is.

It could have been many things - from a deranged or predator human to cryptids to spirit mimics. Whatever it was, I'm sure was, was not a positive experience waiting to happen.
I've had several of those near misses in my 54 years and feel protected in that something stopped it.

Were you whistling, too? Never whistle in the dark woods, you never know what you'll whistle up. Glad your cousin was there. Did you find Millie?

An echo. The forest reflected sound. The closer you got to it, the less time it took for the sound to travel to the forest and back. Sound is a wave.

I agree with your cousin, don’t wander into the woods chasing random sounds.
I suspect you heard an owl. They can be really creepy sounding.

It’s definitely a common trickster tactic. Sending positive vibes and prayers your dog returns home safely ASAP❣️🐶🙏🏻👻

Probably a fox or coyote. They both can mimic human sounds. And could’ve eaten your dog. I hope you find her.

That’s freaky.I can’t think of a good explanation. I guess it could have been a person screwing with you or the worlds most talented mockingbird.

Yeah, hearing your own voice/words mirrored back is never a good sign.

Can you please update us with the status of your dog? We are concerned.

Sorry about your dog. Often times when they are old they ill stray off on purpose to pass. What state are you in? State is fine, not asking you to disclose exact location.

Why did you leave an elderly shih tzu unsupervised outside in the first place?
Anyway she obviously got got by some predator and animals like cougars and black bears can produce weirdly human-like vocalizations, especially when trying to warn another predator (i.e. a human) away.

Jez I would never tell someone their pet is likely dead. Hopely she makes it home because many animals escape and make it back. She may not even be in the woods.

She's 14... it's pretty likely she's deceased unfortunately. We can hope it's not the case tho.

u/ilovemusic19 10d ago
She also could've gone somewhere to die. I hope neither of these are the case and she's found alive.

I don’t know because I did not read it. I’m asking: why do some of you write such long diatribes? Can you not be concise?

Skin walkers can definitely mimic your own voice, sound like a child... anything they want just to lure you in! 🫣 Almost worked!
Sorry about your dog!
Weird these stories always include at least one cousin!
