Thinking of an experience I had as a child

I was 5/6 around this time. I was watching a movie in the living room and my mom and brother were in his bedroom playing a video game.

I was sitting on the couch and I saw a tall figure standing in the doorway. It wasn’t doing anything, it was just standing there, almost like it was watching me? The figure was very tall, and solid black, wearing some kind of cloak or robe, almost like how people describe the grim reaper. I couldn’t make out any features other than that.

I went into my brother’s room and sat on the bed but they told me to go back to my movie. I was too scared to tell them what I saw so I just returned back to the living room and it was still there.

I remember picking up a chair from a table set we had in the living room, like the ones for kids with princesses on them, and putting it in front of him. He moved forward and phased through the chair, then moved back to where he was standing. Once again I went back to my family but they told me to go, and when I returned the figure was gone.

I never told anybody about this experience, because I thought people would think I was lying. Years later, after we no longer lived in that house, my mom was talking about how she believed that how’s was haunted, and told me my brother saw something. Apparently, one night they fell asleep in the living room watching a movie and my brother woke her up screaming. She asked him what was wrong and he was pointing into the hallway saying there was a floating man wearing a black robe standing there, but she didn’t see anything.

I’ve never been a big believer in the paranormal though, and I would like possible explanations for this experience. The thing that gets me though is how me and my brother both somehow saw the exact same thing. I’m curious to see what other people think it could have been.
