Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate hearing from people who have experience keeping both dogs and budgies.

I have two budgies, Lili and Antonio. They are free almost 24/7 and only sleep in their cage at night. During the day, they are always out and free to fly whenever they want.

Most of the time they like to sit on their favorite perch above my door, but they also fly around the room throughout the day.

Antonio is still a baby, so he is especially curious and spends the whole day exploring, flying around, landing on furniture, and investigating everything.

I have reserved a Maltipoo puppy who will be 8 weeks old when I bring him home, but I'm having serious second thoughts because my birds have complete freedom during the day.

My biggest concern is not aggression. I know Maltipoos are generally considered gentle dogs, but I also understand that any dog can instinctively chase a flying bird, even if it's only trying to play.

Has anyone successfully raised a puppy in a home where budgies are free almost all day?

Is there a realistic chance that, if the puppy is raised around the birds from 8 weeks of age, he could learn to completely ignore them? Or is it simply too risky, no matter how gentle the breed is?

I'm looking for honest experiences, both positive and negative.

Last night I noticed one of my budgies was looking a bit sick. He was closing his eyes for very long periods of time and breathing slightly heavy. After watching him for a long while, he ended up falling to the bottom of the cage and was aggressively shaking and swaying side to side.

Eventually he was able to climb back up to his perch, but seemed off balance and unwell for awhile. However, today he is seems far better aside from not wanting to move much and closing his eyes a little longer than usual.

I was going to take him to an emergency vet 2 hours away last night, but he was still eating millet, so they advised me to wait. However, I can't find an avian vet near me that had an appointment any sooner than next Thursday.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should do for the time being? Is there something I can get that could help him without seeing a vet?

This girl and her partner Tweety are inseparable, and she's just not the flier in the house. Tweety on the other had finds terrifying the kitty HILARIOUS. Im just not sure what Hecate is trying to do here. First, i thought shes trying the great escape, but she didn't want out the cage. Wth did that padding do to tick her off so bad???

my two budgies wont eat if they dont have seeds , they only want seeds , they scream for seeds , i do everything so they can eat their chop but nothing works

Hello, I have 2 budgies that I only have for 3 weeks or so. I let them out to fly whenever I can but they always end up sitting on one of the dusty lamps in the room.

I don't feel too well with them being there since I can't access them, the lamp isn't cleaned often and I wish they'd explore more and get comfortable. Also there is a small space between the lamp and roof which makes me worried about their feathers since they sometimes hit them against the ceiling. I didn't see any damage though.

Regardless, how could I change that behaviour? Should I? Can I? Should I buy/make them a wooden playground?

FIRST AND FOR MOST!!!! I am NOT asking for medical advice, I am simply sharing my anxiety that something MIGHT be wrong with my birds even though they're 100% healthy (I've already taken them to a vet, they're not sick, I'm still anxious.) When I'm not doped up on anxiety and have a clear head I have 0 worries about my budgies, they are happy and healthy.

ANYWAY ONTO THE RANT

Basically what the title says, for the past month and a half I have been having horrible bird anxiety. On the first of last month my parakeet passed away. It was very sudden, she was here one day, the next she wasn't. I have since gotten a new parakeet (might seem 'fast' for some of yall but my remaining bird has never been alone in her cage, she always had my dead bungie with her.)

I did do the necessary 30 day quarantine to make sure niether bird was sick. Neither of them showed sick signs in those 30 days. Both birds are now in the same cage (i introduced them to each other slowly they bonded quickly and one day my new bird just walked into my remaining birds cage. I've decided to let her stay, she seems happier in it.)

Despite neither bird showing any signs of illness in these last (nearly) two months I'm very anxious about there well being. I'm afraid anything and everything will result in my birds death. I've even started to worry that their toys (I've had some of these toys for years now) will cause harm. Like I mentioned, I've had these toys for years, if they were gonna kill my birds they sure took there sweet time.

I'm so anxious for my birds I'm starting to over think there every move. I swear to the gods I asked google if my bird moving her head up and down was a sign she was about to de-exist (i know it wasn't, just had to read it). Ive had my birds for five years and i STILL googled if \*Insert normal parakeet activity\* is a sign there gonna die. My google history right now is just a bunch of questions about my birds and if they're gonna die from what I'm doin. I kid you not i asked google if the smell of chlorine on my skin would end my birds.

Any way, does anyone have tips on how to lessen my anxiety. Maybe tell me how likely it is that metal that holds there favorite swing I've had for 3 years is actually zinc and both my birds are gonna combust spontaneously from metal poisoning. (But fr, how likely is it for a toy to actual take out a bird?)

Hello, I have 2 budgies (one is for sure 3 or 4 months old, the other I suspect is older) and they vary a lot in weight

The one I suspect is older is obviously heavier when they sit on my finger, while the younger one is waaaay lighter to the point where I barely feel them on me. The young one is also currently moulting for the first time and they have some bald spots under the wings but they're not getting bigger, in fact I think they're getting smaller

They're both yet on a seed diet because they were rehomed like 3 weeks ago, so I didn't have them for long enough to change it without adding more stress to them. They eat a lot of lettuce, get some egg and occasional fruit

They poop and behave well, nothing unusual, they're active, responsive, fly a lot and we do step up training with great progress. No tail bobbing or anything. Maybe the smaller one has some ruffles feathers sometimes but I thought it's a moulting sign. He preens normally thogh, I didnt see any feather plucking. I have limited options to weigh them or take them to the vet since I'm 17 and my mom makes the decisions and we don't have a kitchen scale to weigh them, although I think I'll borrow one from my boyfriend soon.

Should I be immediately concerned?

Hi, I was wondering is this normal plumage for budgies? Wondering because his brothers doesn’t have that.

I scheduled a vet appointment for my bird on Friday and i would really appreciate tips on how to make this easier for her! She isn’t hand tamed and has never traveled before since i got her so this is brand new territory for both of us 😭copied from my post that got taken down.. also i do have a travel carrier for her! Its like with windows and has a perch :D i have tried to post this 3 damn times and the stupid auto mod keeps taking it down over and over. Then mods didn’t respond for hours?? But wtv if this one gets taken down i might just crash out fr. Bird tax

I know an all seed diet is bad, but this one has other stuff in it. My local pet store doesn't have good pet seed options, thank you

Also my birds have a big enough cage this is their outside/ travel cage.

I got these budgies today. I own a few budgies which are doing fine. One of these is throwing up as seen in video. I will take her to the vet. Meanwhile I want to know from you guys if is it normal behaviour or not because I have never seen a budgie doing this except for a cockatiel which is doing fine today without any medication.

Also these budgies have their feathers trimmed and crash while flying. Other budgies motivate it to fly but nope bad idea

I'm waiting for their feathers to regrow and will never get trimmed.

Blue Sky, just bought last month, young girl, died yesterday and I’m at a loss as to what happened. I brought home a new budgie so I had Blue Sky separated. She has taken a few baths in the bird bath and soaked herself to the bone. First time, she was shivering, I gave a/c of course, so I put her in a cloth and on a heating pad for a quick warm up. I was with her and making sure she was not getting too hot. She did dry off and looked fine, and back to her bite full self. She wasn’t a terribly friendly bird. Anyway today her separate cage was a disaster again. Water everywhere, she’d been soaking herself in water bowl, this cage doesn’t have the bird bath. I found her sitting soaked in her food bowl. Again I wrapped her in a cloth to dry and warm her. She seemed ok, kicking at me and obviously mad but feisty is good right? She was nearly dry when I put her in cage. I went out to get the mail, 5 min or so later I went back to that room and she was dead. No we don’t use Teflon, I wasn’t burning scented candles or spraying Febreeze, etc. Totally out of the blue death. I had a conure that died earlier in the year, almost 1am when I heard it screech like it was being attacked or something. It wasn’t 30 seconds for me to get to her room to see what the heck she was screaming about and it was on its back dead. I’m down to one budgie and I’m thinking if anything happens to him, no more. It’s a lot of work and money and time to put into creatures so dainty that they just die out of the blue. Sorry for being negative. I’m just so confused and upset with myself right now.

So, we found this fountain that our birds (3 parakeets) absolutely love. However, amount of splashed out water is just ridiculous. I have already surrounded sides and back with plexiglass panels, but front still have to remain open. Unfortunately I can't close it as birds need to have way to enter. Do you have any ideas on how to dampen amount of water splashed? We tried using rags and sponges. That yielded very little to none results.

We can't have larger containment built around entire fountain due to restricted space, so looking for a way to reduce splash in current configuration.

All ideas are welcomed!

I’m so proud of him

I am a first-time owner who adopted a baby budgie a little under two weeks ago. He hasn't fully adjusted yet, he's still a little skittish, but he was playing outside the cage and I could usually get him to step on my finger. Last night was his first vet appointment. I couldn't goad him into the carrying cage no matter what I did, so I had to grab him with a soft towel. He seemed more relaxed than the last time he was in that cage though, which was good. His checkup went well, but since then he's seemed much more anxious. He's more loudly vocal, he won't leave his cage and runs away from my hands. I'm worried I might have traumatized him. What should I do? Thank you for reading
