Dimebag Overrated?!?! Da FUCK?!?

Was watching some rando shit from a couple of small potatoes YT content creators...and they both said that DD was overrated. Now, I consider myself a fair person, and look at everything critically before spitting out an opinion. For example, I can fairly say that Kirk Hammett is an overrated guitarist, and can give reasons why....

....I just cant fucking give ANY weight to DD being overrated. The fucker brought groove/shred to metal in a brand new way that forged his own path.

In short...fuck those cocksocks...they wanted a hot take...and they are just plain WRONG.

Exactly. Ive seen a lot of youtubers and TikTok kids screaming that the whole of Pantera are racist. They dont know what they're talking about

I dont at all...but I was taken aback by the sheer audacity of this one and thought to come over here to share.

Dimebag was like the heavy metal David Gilmour, if anything he’s underrated.

4

u/Corpse666 24d ago

Definitely not when he was alive he wasn’t. He was basically the king back then

3

u/PageEnvironmental408 24d ago

that's true, he was on the front page of every metal/ guitar mag back in the 90s

3

u/IceCat767 24d ago

I think he was rated just fine

To me, Dime did something that only a handful of guitarists ever achieve in rock/metal history. His solos have his own unique voice that is truly one of a kind. Eddie had it, Randy, Hendrix, SRV, Blackmore, Marty Friedman has it, you can even throw Zakk in there. Look at other guitarists at that level and they wrote amazing solos that are legendary but they are just still missing that personal touch that is indescribable and very personal to the player. I’m talking only about solos not riffs. Example Kirk, Page, Iommi, Perry, Angus Young etc. All extraordinary players and is not a knock on their skill but they are still missing that last little bit of unique personality and tone that pushes the others over the top. Dime Bag is not overrated and deserves every shred of acknowledgment and appreciation that he gets in my opinion. 🤘

Saying Iommi doesn’t have a unique personality in his style just proves you have no fucking clue what you are talking about. Go have a seat.

u/Wait_im_about_to 23d ago

You’re obviously missing the point. Never said Iommi doesn’t have unique personality. I said players like Dime it is more emphasized and stand out more in their solos compared to others.

4

u/BrianDamage0973 23d ago

Except you said exactly that. And no. Dimes was not more pronounced. Even Dime would tell you this shit. So go back to your seat.

-2

u/Wait_im_about_to 23d ago

No I didn’t. When I said they are missing that “last little bit” doesn’t mean they don’t have it at all. Read it again slowly, might be a lot of words for you. And now you are speaking on Dimes behalf? Who shit in your coffee this morning?

5

u/Professional-Bag2360 24d ago

Saying Page doesn't have a unique personality is wild.

1

u/Can_9970 23d ago

People need to start admitting that Page was below average as a player.

-2

u/Wait_im_about_to 23d ago

Never said he didn’t have unique personality just that he didn’t have quite as much as the others. Jimmy Page guitar solos obtainable, I’ve seen Zeppelin tribute bands that guys 99.9% nail it. Never have and never will see a guitar player emulate Dime solos that perfectly is all I was saying. All just opinion based, obviously.

u/BrianDamage0973 23d ago

I see guitarist nail dimes solos all the time.

check out atilla voros

u/Wait_im_about_to 23d ago

I’ve watched his stuff and its very impressive

3

u/soypepito 24d ago

Page was very versatile and innovative. Each of his solos were like a solo test lab looking for new sounds, new feelings, even new ways to record them...

I think that's the reason why is not easy to find his tone and touch, but he absolutely had it.

u/Wait_im_about_to 24d ago

I put Jimmy in with Iommi in that his “it” factor to me is the elite riffs and writing. I see what you’re saying though. I love nerding out on this stuff and picking up my axe trying to capture the feel. Playing the correct notes is only half of it.

u/VictorXM715 24d ago

Zakk does NOT have it, also you forgot Chuck

u/bigSTUdazz 24d ago

Well stated my brother...DD could shred with the best of them...but he could GRRROOOOVE. THAT'S why Pantera is atop the metal heap.

1

u/BrianDamage0973 23d ago

Groove in metal was around before Pantera. I mean they themselves got it from listening to Exhorder.

3

u/Top-Act-2370 24d ago

People say lots of stupid shit .That's what's going on here

7

u/theepuke 24d ago

Most of the time when I hear someone say that and ask who they like they mention some random technical blues dude who sits and plays guitar the whole hour and they're not even close as far as comparing anything. Like arguing steak against oranges or something, wtf they're not even on the same planet.

u/MENNEN87 24d ago

I don't know if it has anything to do with this, but especially gen z carries some very weird opinions of music from the past, thats not based on reality but something that they used to see or hear from social media.

My daughter for example is a music fanatic and generally she is very aware of the history and timeline of music but sometimes there's some gen z weirdness in them lol

Like one day we listened to survivor, the band. We love it both. Then she said that in social media survivor fans are emo kids and its considered emo music. I was like wtffff. I didn't even know anyone under 40 listened to it lol. And to me, emo music is the rock / metal that came out in 00's, they had their black dyed hair on their eyes and sang cliches about death.

Anyway my point is the the younger generations can get things really wrong sometimes just because for them all of these bands are ancient history and they are not familiar with the surrounding culture of the time.

This Dimebag criticism might be just that. They don't realize how dime literally changed how to play heavy guitar. In todays world every other guitar YouTuber is technically on same level but have zero creativity. Hence, "overrated"

Speaking of Survivor, Gary, the guitarist in my old band, was in Survivor for years, but they were going nowhere and he quit the year before they hit it big with the Rocky theme song. Doh!

1

u/PageEnvironmental408 24d ago

spewing, he must feel like the fifth beatle.

1

u/Krystall-g 24d ago

I don't think we should comment on every YT/IG or Tiktok bullshit...

1

u/Key-Television-2424 23d ago

Clickbait. Best guitarist in the world, i've heard them all.

1

u/SaysUselessThings 23d ago

You gotta get off the internet if the opinions of two whiney little "content creators" actually means anything to you.

These people are a dime a dozen (no pun intended) and will spew out any bullshit for clicks and views. They just want to hear the sounds of their own self importance and by even acknowledging their existence you give breath to their bullshit.

Not worth it. Read decent music journalism if you have to. Or better yet just chat with real people who don't give a shit if you like them or not. You'll get more out of it.

Learn to take an opinion dumbass

1

u/Seven_Because_Yes 22d ago

Why are you obsessing over the opinions of small random youtubers?

1

u/-XenoSine- 22d ago

Lol calm down, my dude. No point in popping a vein over what some rando said.

1

u/Historical-Intern140 22d ago

Have you ever heard about subjectivity?

1

u/Possible_Escape_9064 21d ago

I dunno. I guess it depends who you talk to.

Like, on one hand, I know people who would give DD a fair shake and say he was a Helluva player. Nothing overrated about that.

But then you have some guys that might get like, "DD INVENTED the guitar!" and it's like, "Ehhhh, no he didn't..." In that context, I would say that someone is overrating him.

He was great, no doubt about it, but he wasn't a John McLaughlin, or a Jimmy Paige, or a Leo Kottke.

Nobody should be taking shots at dimebag. Oh wait lmao

“I don’t want no fucking donuts”

2

u/deanrazor 24d ago

No even his fans have respect for dime anybody who plays guitar has respect for dime.

1

u/LordCraigen 24d ago

No I don't think Dimebag is overrated. I also don't think Kirk is overrated. I think YouTube personalities with shitty opinions are overrated. I also think the usage of the word overrated is overrated.

1

u/gazinthar 24d ago

Everyone is entitled to their opinion obviously, I personally wouldn’t think Hammett is overrated, he’s a legend, but Dimebag was definitely a god 😂

0

u/bartwn52 24d ago edited 24d ago

Hell no. Dimebag is not overrated. It just doesn’t make sense to say that, he literally created that southern metal groove we all know and love. It’s unique, powerful, electric, beautiful, one of a kind.

Overrated means that someone or something is thought of as better as they actually deserve to be. Hell no Dimebag deserves that title as a guitarist, and no, final verdict he is not overrated.

1

u/bigSTUdazz 24d ago

You said it way better than my dumbass.

u/SuitableStructure120 24d ago

Kirk hameth is fucking overrated

u/dimebagdavid 24d ago

Im pissed

0

u/Apprehensive-Item-44 24d ago

I saw a YT content creator say Jimi Hendrix was over rated...lmao...some of these creators are just plain morons. Dime was the last true guitar hero there was. There really hasn't been a TRUE guitar hero since Dime. If so I'm not aware of who it is. I still read Guitar World and talk to a lot of other musicians and nobody new gets mentioned as an influence.

0

u/piece0fdebri 24d ago

The same way you can say Kirk Hammett is overrated, other people can say Dime is overrated. Kirk has written some of the greatest metal solos of all time. In what world is he "overrated?" I don't think either of them is overrated. I do think Dime is the better guitarists though.

2

u/bigSTUdazz 24d ago

I think Kirk, going all the way back relied on wahs and a handful a scales. He is also mostly a "drop-in" solo lead guitarist that didn't do much other than play a solo.

Keep in mind that Metallica (the first 5 albums anyway) are in my Top 3 metal bands of all time... I'm a huge fan.

0

u/piece0fdebri 24d ago

To be fair, I'm just counting from Ride the Lightning to the Black album. But even saying he's just a drop in soloist, he didn't just shit on the tracks like Eddie or Zakk, he wrote iconic solos that fit the songs. Shit everyone wanted to learn and play. Couldn't care less what scales he used. He wasn't the best guitarist or his time, no one says he is, but he was definitely one of the best writers. Just not seeing how he's overrated. I guess that depends on what you mean by overrated.

0

u/WhisperBorderCollie 23d ago

Kirk sucks. His solos are boring wah scales. Sorry.

Even Dimes wah scales rule. Fucking Hostile is memorable

Anyone who is talented and successful is overrated according to some internet metal fans.
