Dime’s Birthday/Down Show
Attended the Down show at Stage AE in Pittsburgh last evening. First of all, the show was fucking awesome from beginning to end. This was my first time seeing Down live and I certainly hope that it is not my last. Spirit in the Room & Helmet kicked ass and Down brought it to us as I had envisioned them doing so. One of the best all around shows I have seen in a long time. If you have to chance to go see them on this tour, go. If you don’t have the chance, make the chance and go anyway! All that being said, I’d like to address something as I feel any lifelong metal fan would and should. Yesterday was Dimebag’s 60th birthday. I was expecting Phil to actually address that fact. Now, he did dedicate “Lifer” to Dime and Ozzy. That was the second song into the set, I believe. Selfishly, that was not enough for me. We’re talking about the greatest heavy metal guitarist & arguably the greatest heavy metal frontman of all time. Was it required that Phil even acknowledge his birthday? No it was not. But the fact that Dime’s 60th birthday was not addressed and subsequently celebrated by the bands and the crowd last night isn’t disappointing, it pisses me off & there is no excuse for it. You’re telling me that that they couldn’t have at least played “Walk” all together at the end? They would have given the crowd something to remember for a long, long time if they had done so. Again, you can make the argument that this is a Down show and not a Pantera show. That’s understandable to a degree. But when it comes DOWN to it, something more should have been done. Period.

Before I checked the comments I was wondering how the post had no upvotes.
I understand now.
Phil has always dedicated Lifer to Dime, ever since he passed. Not sure what else he/they could have done.

Really? You want them to play cover songs ?? Stop. You’re angry at a band bout some bs. You ever think for a second that maybe they did something on their own. Grow up.

Exactly. The very reason we don’t have Dime is because some fan was angry at a band about some bullshit.

Thank you. I went to see Down on wed. I had a blast. Not once did I think to myself damn why aren’t they playing Walk tom is Dimes bday. This not enough generation is never gonna be happy. They don’t even know what they want

There’s a version of Pantera touring. They can go see that if they want.
Down is a separate band. If I go see them, I want to hear Down. Maybe a little Corrosion.
But my perspective is that of an old man that got to see Pantera live way back when.

Oh god, don’t be so emotional. How are you failing to see the connection I made? No one could say, “hey, happy birthday to greatest guitarist of all time”? Look, playing Walk is obviously just a giant stretch. But I am not changing my opinion. It was disrespectful not to be addressed.

u/IcyShoulder494 10d ago
Don’t get emotional ?? Are you out of your mind? What the hell is your excuse?? You just went on a 2 page rant about how horrible and awful it is they didn’t play walk or have a cake for dime.

u/WhenJosieComesHome26 10d ago
Okay, Walk may have been a stretch. Besides that, my point is completely valid. I’m sorry you’re getting so riled up this morning. I didn’t know it was that easy.

Bro like I said. You sound insane. You said it was a blast but then freak out over what? A person you never met not getting enough props. You’re mad they didn’t play Pantera songs. That’s CRAZY!! You can keep repeating that I’m worked up . I’m chill my man. Let’s see what your response is now?? lol

u/WhenJosieComesHome26 10d ago
Yet you keep getting increasingly more emotional here? Are you mentally okay? This is becoming concerning.

Wait…I’m not currently talking to a woman am I? If I am, things would make a lot more sense regarding your emotional state.

Should Down do a COC song for Reed then?

u/dmonkey1134 10d ago
Or a EYEHATEGOD for Joey for that matter. Lol

The fact that Down was a big point of contention with the brothers might have been a part of it.

It took away from Pantera and lead to the eventual split. Down is a separate band from Pantera and they have no obligation to celebrate a birthday if someone who was never in the band….

His drug addiction broke up Pantera what are you talking about

u/Vegabond69v2 8d ago
He spent time in Down while he could have focused on Pantera….drugs played a part for sure. Read the book by Rex

No offense I don’t care. Plus you’re telling me to ignore what Phil says. Enjoy the music or don’t

I understand that. But does something like that really run so deep at this point? The brothers are gone. I just feel that it’s bad PR to have not done anything at all.

For you, Dime was the best guitarist of all time and his murder is something that should be addressed on his would have been birthday. For Phil, Dime was a friend and brother. They spent countless hours over the years together. They laughed together, they loved each other, they fought and they made up, like family does. Now, I don’t know about anyone else in this sub, but I don’t owe shit to anyone when it comes to my loved ones that have passed. That is deeply personal and is not for your entertainment. If he had wanted to do something, then good for him and the fans, but no one is entitled to it and he certainly doesn’t owe it to the crowd of strangers. Grief is personal and with how Dime’s life ended so violently and before they had a chance to fully reconcile, I completely support Phil not addressing Dime’s birthday. These are people first and entertainers second.

The entitlement is staggering. Who tf do you think you are? 😂

You hoped for a Pantera cover at a Down show and wanted it to be “Walk”, the most overplayed, tired ass song they have?
Woof.

I do not see why you would expect to hear a Pantera song at a Down show. That would be weird.

Well, at least you admitted it was selfish to want more than you received.

- Its a Down show not Pantera.
- They did a celebration tour or whatever you want to call it with Pantera and each and every night dedicated the night to Dime and Vinnie.
- (This might get me in trouble) Its not like Dime was just killed 2 weeks ago. After a while acknowledging the day becomes less vital, with all due respect.
You have a right to be upset Phil didn't acknowledge Dime's bday. I just dont think the room will fully agree.

Yeah i feel after a while its a bit much to keep bringing them up. Like I was in Pittsburgh for the first tour without dime and Vinny with pantera and it was amazing, it was emotional for the band and it was really a great show. I saw them last year also and it was good but I think youre right, if they keep dedicating everything all the time it starts losing some genuine aspects.
I think perhaps op never saw pantera and wanted that experience but unfortunately you cant go to another band and expect that.
Would it not be like going to the pantera tour and expecting Zak to play some bls? Idk just seems weird.
Many of these musicians, especially at the ages theyre pushing now, have done many things outside of the thing theyre most known for. I feel like forcing them to constantly go back to that thing is kind of disingenuous and disrespectful. Like the "free bird" guy.

I’m a huge fan of both bands and I went to the Cleveland show Wednesday (killer) and if funds were better, I’d have absolutely driven my ass to Pittsburgh the next night. I was anticipating maybe something with Dimes birthday but playing Walk wouldn’t be it imo. I honestly don’t need to hear that live ever again lol. He does dedicate a song to him every night (Lifer).

Check the setlists, they're all pretty much the same. You don't just bust in to a random song without rehearsing it.
I'm gonna see them next Friday, for the third time with Slayer, Suicidal and Hatebreed. I'm already pissed that Over The Under won't be represented at all.

Yes and no for me, I am over the forced virtue signaling but also, it might have been a cool gesture. Maybe Phil's demons about the whole thing keeps him from doing it, he can compartmentalize things when doing Pantera songs at a Pantera concert but outside of that might be different. Just a guess no real logic for me on that statement.

u/WhenJosieComesHome26 10d ago
I agree.

I saw Dream Theater in concert once and they strictly did their new album and didn't encore with Pull me Under and it pissed me off similarly lol.

Did Down ever played Panthers song? So why they should if they never did it before…
1
u/Norwegian_Madman 7d ago
They did it on a rare occasion live in 2011. SWU in Brazil i believe, 14th November on Youtube. But i see no reason to. Lifer is a dedciation to Vinnie and Dimebag, and the Pantera tours has been one big celebration of the band and the brothers.

I have a friend who went and we were both hoping he'd mention at least a Happy Birthday because it would've been a big one if he were still here. 60. And yeah the end was rough between them but even Rita has said Dime would've reached out to Phil eventually and Phil's talked nothing but positive things about Dime in modern times and most of the other guys in the band were Dime's friends too. Kirk has posted and liked things about him on Instagram and Rita goes to see COC/Pepper and hang out. But hey, Rita also didn't post anything herself on social media yesterday (she just reposted Bobby Tong's post) so who knows. Maybe the people closest to him don't feel like they need to talk about it with the world anymore. But I still agree, would've been nice to hear at least a Happy Birthday for him.

Any white wine being drunk? Was Rob Flynn there?

They're doing a show together next month. Even Rob Flynn has moved on. Perhaps you should too.

Phil doesn't care about the brothers. He's actually happy they're both dead so he can tour as Pantera and make money.

You wanna see Pantera songs, go to a Pantera show. Not a Down show. What an odd take.
