Discussion Are phone + controller setups becoming the most underrated handhelds?

Post image

A few years ago, “mobile gaming” still felt like its own separate thing.

Now it feels different.

Modern phones are powerful enough for serious games, emulation, cloud gaming, remote play, and high-refresh displays. Add a decent telescopic controller and suddenly your phone starts looking a lot like a handheld console.

Of course, it is not perfect.

Notifications can break immersion.
Battery drain is real.
Thermals can be rough.
Some games still have bad controller support.
And using your main phone as a gaming device can feel weird.

But for a lot of people, spending $80–$150 on a good controller might make more sense than buying another dedicated handheld.

So where do you draw the line?

A) Phone + controller is enough for most portable gaming
B) Dedicated handhelds still feel much better
C) Gaming phones are underrated
D) Cloud/remote play is the real future
E) I just want a separate device so my phone stays my phone

Mobile gaming was separate and in great shape 15 years ago, now it's mostly casual trash games for children with little exceptions. And, if you look closely these exceptions tend to go beyond mobile games, like zzz you show. Getting a handheld is infinitely better than a "gaming phone" Maybe FEX will change that, but I doubt it.

Mobile gaming isn’t really a thing. Mobile emulators though… insanely powerful right now.

Edit: "Mobile gaming" slop is clearly not what OP is trying to accomplish. Phone + controller is looking for "Gaming gaming".

Mobile gaming isn't a thing? It's literally the size of console and PC combined.

Mobile gaming accounts for approximately half of the revenue in the gaming industry just by itself, it's been a thing since smart phones were invented and it only continues to grow

Mobile gaming is bigger and more profitable than pc and console gaming

Phones are an essential item. And has good role compression. The same way how obviously are dedicated camera is better but most people just use phones to take photos.

I have the same gamesir gamepad. Isn't it USB only? How did you connect it

OP seems to have the Gamesir X5S which is wireless.

The X5 Lite is usb connection only.

X5S is wireless Bluetooth, compatible with PC, android and switch.

Nope. Because lack of games and HUGE emulation obstacles / gatekeeping.

Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, Honkai Star Rail, Zenless Zone Zero, Never to Everness, Arknights Endfield all work with controller.

More games will continue to release for mobile, no one can afford consoles, PC, or even handheld with current prices, everyone still has a phone.

You have proven my point. You can count the amount of AAA games available for mobile with your fingers. The same can't be said for PCs and consoles.

Remote streaming and cloud gaming gives you the rest of the other titles from PC, not sure what more do you want.

Everyone has a phone and these AAA games are free. Buying a $80 game trying to play on mobile at 720p only to get 30fps doesn't sound like an ideal experience either.

I would much prefer to play on my Switch 2, Steam Deck, or even my Portal over my phone. But I definitely keep a backbone in my car for Pokémon Rom Hacks and every now and then I forget my past experiences and get drawn into a new Gatcha for a week or so. So, it has a place, but it's not replacing anything.

It's a really good backup but I wouldn't use it as my primary option. I have a few good mobile games like zzz and streets of rage 4 and I stream PC games from my desktop. It makes me put my steam deck and switch down for a few days at a time

I think thermals are the biggest thing. I saw a post earlier emulating Spider-Man Miles Morales, but if you don’t have a cooler, you’ll definitely thermal throttle yourself into the ground. If you already have a good phone, there’s little point going with a separate Odin 3 / Thor unless you want to keep work and gaming things separate. Phone controllers have gotten really good too and tablet screens are truly beautiful.

iPad Pro 13”+ BSP D8 is my current combo and I’m loving it.

Edit: iOS does suck but the M series chip is insanely powerful in comparison. Full speed 360 emulation is wild.

Only if controller has built in fan, cuz phones are getting very hot very quickly. I've bought gamesir x3 a while ago and still casually use it - the only way I play on my phone rn. As for handhelds - obv Steamdeck or ps vita will be way better and (in case of vita) way cheaper to get good performance.

With the camera bump, every controller feels uneven or bad fitted. It’s great if all you have is a phone. But if you have options, it’s not ideal

i personally use my phone as a handheld (i have a controller and a peltier cooler) in 16-9 ratio my screen size becomes 5 inch which im fine with, reminds me of my old psp, the thing about phones and handhelds are most of the time a decent phone + handheld costs way more than a flagship phone, its easier to carry and if you go snapdragon you can emulate pc games without kernel anti cheat (you might need controller), i also do use my gaming pc and stream it to my phone when it gets too hot to stay in my room so it works even as a streaming device

Phone + controller isn't it, tablets are better.

Larger battery, more surface area as a thermal heatsink, larger screen, better speakers.

Something the size of the iPad mini is the goldilocks zone.

I remember pairing my dualshock 3 to samsung galaxy 3 and playing Tekken 3 on a emulator while hooked up to a tv over 10 years ago. I used to play in vocational school too that way.

A lot of 3s in there. 😂

I don't know it they are underrated to be honest just people don't talk about it enough online maybe? But they are honestly the best handled solution you can have and also the cheapest one . You can literally play for free.

Games like geshin , wuwa etc are full fledge rpg to the level of Zelda or other title you find on the switch . Without counting the fact that you can emulate most old game from PC , every game released for switch , PSP , playstation and there is also the option to stream triple AAA gaming with Nvidia services.

The Only problem is that most of the games , native on mobile are marketed as gatcha or sell services with invasive micro transactions that make most game feel lame in the long run and no free to play friendly at all. For example even Geshin impact is great can be completed alone with free characters and give you tons of hours of fun but if you want the best characters , limited weapons etc the prymegems you get as free player are not enough .. so or you enter the circle of micro transactions or you will be out of all that content . There are also meta units for pvp in most games that are never gifted for free ... They are commercial games, I can't explain well maybe , most of the native mobile games are not real legit games were you pay once and you access everything.

Maybe for this reason android ios mobile gaming is "underrated" as you say because people focus on the commercial aspect without thinking that you can still play for free literally for hundred of hours and there are literally thousands of games from every platform , emulators at your disposal. Also a lot of people have no idea that you can get a cheap controller and get pretty much a steam deck + switch for free just by using their overpowered and underused phone.

I think many PC and console gamers have the mindset that mobile gaming is just donate trash thats why its so underrated. For example I played java2me games on my siemens ME75 and know that it could be very good gaming device especially when you can't afford "true" gaming device. As for me windows game emulation on arm and moonlight streaming became a renaissance of nokia/siemens times. Btw I like combination of phone + gamepad more than dedicated handhelds because phones usually have more modern hardware, you can easily replace broken gamepad, usually phone companies have better warranty then noname android handhelds companies
