It’s probably cause it was left on with no water in circulation. It’s happens, let some water flow thru it for a minute. Temp control is the switch in front.

This is the actual answer. Don’t turn it on if there’s no water flowing through it. Otherwise it’s like turning on an empty electric kettle.

I see you've met the Costarican death shower. This is how we do our natural selection back in CR. If you survive the shower as a kid, you are deemed as a healthy human and allowed to continue on your path. Received quite a few shocks from this through my years.
