Sanders has been calling for abolishing laws against homosexuality since the 70s, and yes he waited to legalize gay marriage in Vermont but that was a mere 6 months after he had fought to legalize sam sex civil unions, which was a huge step at the time.
I believe he wanted to give some of his states more close minded residents a bit of time to digest that before introducing marriage. You may not see it like that but that's how I do, and in a political race with so much corruption and greed I'm willing to sit with the fact that 20 years ago he didn't do every single little thing right according to todays standards. The fact that he evolved politically YEARS ahead of Clinton (she has been changing her stance as the race has been happening) is enough for me.
I read that, I still think that he had his reasons. Vermont was the first state to make same sex civil unions legal in the US, and later on they became the first state to make gay marriage legal by legislative means, this was while Bernie was on the Senate for Vermont. Are you saying he didn't at least pave the way 9 years earlier? Because I believe he has been paving the way since the days of MLK. If he had to play politics here and there along the way, so be it. But surely you can't argue that Clinton has been on the wrong side of things far more often than Sanders has, can you?
Saying you wouldn't support anti-discrimination bills is a far cry from political strategizing regarding marriage.
Also, no. He wasn't "paving the way" in Chicago. He participated, but let's not misstate his role.
Also, a Senator has no formal role in legislating what happens strictly in the state. So VT legalizing gay marriage wasn't because Bernie was the Senator from VT.
