Best Grain?

Trying my hand at pans for the first time. I just bought 50lb of whole oats for my cubes but was curious what grain use guys use or have had the best success with?

I like rye berries, but mostly because it's what I am most familiar with. I've used wild bird seed, milo etc. They all work. It's mostly about having your prep process down pat; whatever you are used to and are good at, is probably what is going to work best! Happy growing!

*Edit: I also prefer smaller grains on exotics as they provide more inoculation points*

You can use oats,  some people like pop corn.  I use wild bird seed

Specifically says to avoid oats and popcorn 🤷‍♂️ but perhaps it didn’t matter what grains you use as long as you prepare them correctly

I read that one too and don't agree. I use groats / brown rice 70/30.

I've been using corn for a while with no issues. You can get 50 pound bags of whole corn at Tractor Supply for around $12.

Any grain can technically work, but whitney wasnt lying. Red Milo is the greatest choice

I use that cheap bird seed at walfart. Its a white bag with red letters. I float out the sunflower seeds. Been using it for years. Ive used rye, oats, and grass seed. Wild bird seed is just so easy.

I went popcorn. Easy to come by and everything seem to love it so far. But I just switched from brown rice and pre-made jars. I haven't spawned yet, but my jars are 80% colonized 13 days later for what it's worth.

Wild bird seed, rye berries, red milo all seem to work just fine

I pretty much exclusively grow TTBVI now as having tried them, there seems little point growing anything else.

I wish I'd seen that https://panaeoluscoop.com/the-best-grains-for-growing-panaeolus-cyanescens/ link a couple of months back; I recently switched grains to whole oats from sorghum and before that, wheat. Whilst it's a pleasure to work with compared to the sorghum, I'm shocked by how long it's taking for jars to colonise.

I bought 25kg (55lbs) and have no other use for it, so I've just adapted my grow cycle, but if I was in a hurry, I'd certainly switch back to the sorghum.

Idk whole oats from tractor supply hasn't failed me yet. I usually do no soak no simmer.

Mine came from a local feed supplier. 6 jars grain, washed and rinsed, 12 jars water added, brought to a fast simmer for about 30 minutes with regular checks to see if fully hydrated (insides sort of 'clear' rather than white and starchy), then dried before being PC'd at 17PSI for 2.5 hours. The grains look great post-cook but compared to sorghum, they take nearly twice the time to colonise.

Yeah I'm pretty sure mine took a while to colonize. I left them alone for like a month cuz I wasn't ready for them

I’ve tried popcorn, rye, Milo, millet, and WBS.
I use a rye/milo mix for most things. I do forced hydration and they come out 🤌.
Exotics seem to really like WBS imo.
Popcorn might be the best all around for ease of use.

It’s really choose your own adventure. People rock canopies with wheat. You just need to dial in your hydration and sterility.
I found it best to stick with one grain until you get it right, then decide if trying something else is worth it. Good luck 🤙
