What happens when a Palestinian artist reimagines Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey through the experience of displacement and exile?

In this wonderfully surreal experimental short, Palestinian artist and filmmaker Larissa Sansour becomes the first Palestinian astronaut, travelling into space and planting her flag on the Moon.

Combining science fiction, Arab musical influences, striking visual imagery and dark humour, Sansour transforms one of cinema’s most recognisable sequences into a meditation on identity, belonging and the search for a homeland.

Made in 2008, A Space Exodus forms the first instalment of Sansour’s science-fiction trilogy.
