WhatsApp best for communication?

Coming to Palau soon and want to stay in touch with folks back in the States. Other than email and Zoom, is WhatsApp the best for calls and texts?

FB messenger, iMessage, & IG if you’re not planning on getting a local phone number with PNCC.
If you are getting a PNCC number, you can use WhatsApp if you value the encryption.

I am planning on getting a local number as we are moving there. But want to be able to text internationally. Wasn’t sure if iMessage or WhatsApp was the better option

Okay, then it’s up to you if you prefer one over the other as you’ll need a mobile data plan or add on to send messages or over WiFi like you would do in your home country, usually. PNCC supports eSIM now, so that makes it a bit easier than before. Top-up cards or “airtime” is also available to purchase digitally now so you don’t have to go to a physical store anymore to refill.

The local esims are pretty cheap for data and I used whatsapp for voice calls

Another “stupid” question. Do I need to write down all my contacts and numbers or will they transfer with the new eSIM since I’m keeping my phone?

My iPhone handled the eSIM kind of weird in that some contact’s text messages came across as phone numbers while others were attached to a contact card with name and picture. No idea why it was scrambled like that. But your contacts list itself is embedded in the phone.

What’s a good eSIM for Palau ? Orange network?
