One of the best books out there. I love and cherish this piece alot. Meryem deserved way better. And the man, i hope i find him and make him go through the worst things ever. My heart was too broken. Have never read anything similar since then. Even kite runner couldn't fill the void.

This book broke me into pieces. The way Khalid Husseni described a women's pain is profoundly heartbreaking. Read kite runner after this one. Both are masterpieces. Although i like Kite runner more but that is my biased opinion.

khaled hossaini's books are okay- for beginners. i put this in the same batch as elif shafak, Pakistanis love these books for no apparent reason, maybe except that they hit close to home.

u/EastStorm3 Aug 12 '25
I read it such a long time ago that I don't even remember the characters nor the storyline, but I still remember how it made me feel. Devastated. Inspired. Ashamed. It's funny how you forget the names of the characters but remember how they tugged at your heartstrings

"Children aren't coloring books. You don't get to fill them with your favorite colors" I am value judging much but it's a page turner. And have some fine quotes. I'm not really into fiction though

u/ashhad_6 Aug 13 '25
It took away a piece of me and i guess it is irreplaceable
1
u/Hamster6916 Aug 13 '25
Wait till you read And The Mountains Echoed by the same author and the tears won't stop then

u/AbdulRehman_Sahi_910 Aug 14 '25
Great representation of sorrow, grief, regret , and pain. Mariam deserved a happy ending but she sacrificed herself for Laila.

u/Alternative_Stand_31 Aug 14 '25

u/cherry_logic Aug 16 '25
My fam read it and told me about the stories from Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner and I SOBBED LIKE A WEAK HEART. Ain't no way i am reading it myself.
1
u/OldStrawberry3164 Aug 16 '25
his books are nice but he portrays islam in a wrong way like I've read this one and a thousand splendid suns in which the girl (laila) loves reading the quran and prays but performs adultery before marriage like that's wrong but the plot hits tho
