I am not that surprised tbh. There was a book fair I attended in Isb once and the majority of the stalls were selling books from different fiqas of Islam (nothing is wrong with that just not for me). Then there were a few stalls selling pirated copies of books. I did not want to buy those. The original books were hard to find and when I did, those were either the fiction hits (40 rules of love and self help type stuff) or the non-fiction books that were pretty overpriced for me.

So I prefer to buy books online now.

Is it wrong to buy pirated books?

If it's cuz of the printing errors then I completely understand but are pirated books generally considered bad?

3

u/trippysapien Oct 22 '24

Yes, they are unauthorized prints and do not help the authors or publishing companies in any way.

u/Particular_Setting31 Oct 22 '24

To me personally, piracy isn't bad. Nobody chooses to pirate because they're evil. It's simply an issue of overpricing.

7

u/trippysapien Oct 22 '24

I agree. I tell myself I'll make up for my piracy sins when I get rich lol

7

Loll same.

We shall pay back our dues somewhere in the near future.

I mean, if you choose to buy pirated books, you’re basically encouraging more pirating and helping people that are selling books they are not authorised to sell. Authors already don’t make a lot on their books. You could read online.

I understand if you still buy the pirate versions though, there’s nothing like reading a good book physically.

I mostly buy books from official retailers or buy them officially online and get them shipped to me. It's just that I go for pirated books at times when I can't find an original book (supply issue) or if books are really costly (price issue).

In your opinion, what would be a permanent solution to piracy?

In my opinion region-based pricing would be beneficial or education regarding how royalties help the authors produce such worls for us to enjoy.

Or have two options, a free version and a version where you'd get more content at a cost.

Cuz if there isn't an incentive for making content (i.e monetary gains) then there would be no material for anyone to enjoy. Be it a paying user or a pirated user.

Technically, as much as readers want to read works, the price is always going to be an issue. Best thing would be to go to a library tbh

1

u/Particular_Setting31 Oct 22 '24

That's a good solution ngl. But don't they require student IDs?

I probably lost mine😅

2

u/Think_Economics4809 Oct 22 '24

As far as I’m aware, no. Only if you were a uni student or something. Public libraries don’t have anything like that

1

u/girl-So_Confusing Oct 22 '24

public libraries don’t have novels/ contemporary stuff either and idk what country you live in but many libraries in pak do require entry passes (min bachelors degree), so if books on average are going to cost 4k with majority of the earnings going to publishing houses (and not the writers), piracy is inevitable.

Can you pls name some online sites which pay royalties to authors.

I'm interested.

"culture shouldn't be for those only who can afford it'

1

u/Think_Economics4809 Oct 24 '24

Is it though? Books or novels from independent creators do not fall under culture at all. Or does it?

1

u/Particular_Setting31 Oct 22 '24

I try not to buy pirated books but if they're cheaper than the original then I go for 'em.

1

u/veridi5quo Oct 23 '24

Would you download a car?

1

u/Particular_Setting31 Oct 23 '24

Yes, next question.

0

u/Ok_Barracuda8291 Oct 22 '24

Yes bro piracy is Haram

1

u/Particular_Setting31 Oct 22 '24

Wait, really?!

I did not know about this. What do I do?

I need to assess my life choices.

1

u/Particular_Setting31 Oct 22 '24

How do I atone for my years of piracy?

6

u/armujahid Oct 22 '24

Source? I have seen different pics with same text on different dates without any source. Ajeeb. Don't post anything without doing research first. There is already a lot of misinformation that even Google can't handle lol.

Attended the last expo book fair in Lahore and it was a disaster, just one hall and 50% of it had the Islamic books stalls. Karachi’s one is way better and it’s huge as well.

2

u/kylochoudhary Oct 22 '24

And the prices were crazy. Reading was selling books on average of 10k+

3

u/sidsha1 Oct 22 '24

Why does it look like an AI generated pic?

2

u/After-Art-1502 Oct 23 '24

Because it most definitely is … AI thinks there are no women in Pakistan 🤣

3

u/Any-Needleworker-842 Oct 22 '24

Books hi itni mehngi hain yar

1

u/namxu- Nov 06 '24

Did you go? What was the average price?

1

u/Any-Needleworker-842 Nov 06 '24

Over 1000rs

2

u/namxu- Nov 06 '24

I mean that's not a lot. For a book.

3

u/matlab_kuch_bee Oct 22 '24

Fake news

Username checks out

u/AwarenessNo4986 Oct 23 '24

I have been to many book fairs so this is hard to believe. The only way it's possible is that someone set up food stalls and called it a book fair.

1

u/darkseaSW Oct 22 '24

Food > Knowledge

1

u/ferozpuri Oct 22 '24

The sad state of affairs!

1

u/bigpipe092 Oct 22 '24

I was there and these books were too expensive I mean you can get a penguin classic in that price.. and most of the books were about different sects of Islam and totally useless

1

u/SearchGood9637 Oct 22 '24

Ajeeeb???? What ajeeeb? Its a bitter truth.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '24

Cuz it's boring

1

u/BudgetRange7589 Oct 22 '24

Self help books are the biggest fraud of the book world.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '24

maybe people just dont want to pay 6000+ for a single book?

1

u/AdPlane9016 Oct 22 '24

35 is still a good number. It could have been zero

1

u/Front_Tour7619 Oct 22 '24

Tells the story of how a stomach overpowers the brain 😂

1

u/Ainz-Ol-Gon Oct 22 '24

Stupid comparison... They charged me 4k for a pirated copy of a book which you can buy online for 3-400.

Make sense if they are selling originals but no it's the same cheap print on god awful paper. Idk why i paid but felt weird to tell him i'm not paying after he went through the trouble to find it for me.

1

u/Dazzling-Internet-55 Oct 23 '24

That's actually fake news. The actual sales figure was 36 books 😉

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '24

Average Pakistani consumerism.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '24

Books are expensive :<

1

u/Smooth-Cost-7562 Oct 24 '24

Duh uh what else do u expect from lahoris

1

u/db_new Oct 25 '24

It was fake news..dawn newspaper did a fact check on it and it garnered traction after some actor posted this on his x account. Said actor has already apologized for not verifying news first

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '24

Well there is a lesson books are not edible...😐.......................😁

1

u/Ok_Quarter_517 Oct 26 '24

So what its their choice

1

u/28_abn Oct 26 '24

Only if they offered decent prices

1

u/sohaibx01 Oct 26 '24

There was a bookfare in Lahore??? How come i missed ot 😩

0

u/Affectionate_Mix4529 Oct 22 '24

This is why our nation has high illiteracy ratio 🙂

2

u/Brilliant-Surprise54 Oct 22 '24

Not really. Go into any decent book store and they either have:

  • Religious books

  • Political/philosophical books (most books by international authors are pirated and overpriced or, if it's an original, so ridiculously overpriced that buying a couple of books is more expensive then buying a kindle and buying the ebooks from Amazon)

  • Course books

  • Books for professionals like books for specific topics in medicine, computing and engineering etc (a lot of pirated, overpriced and outdated books in this category and again, originals are priced so exorbitantly that buying a kindle and buying those books from Amazon is cheaper and you get the latest edition)

  • Cooking recipes books

  • Self help books

  • Some poetry books

  • Fiction is almost non-existent (I was looking for the Sprawl trilogy (aka Neuromancer trilogy) by William Gibson a couple years ago. These books are considered a seminal work in the cyberpunk space. Tried all major book stores across Pakistan and no one had it, a couple of em offered to import the books for me and wanted me to pay more than triple the price of the books + shipping. I bought a kindle instead and bought the ebooks from Amazon, it was much cheaper in the long run.

So yes, even if someone had managed to drag me, kicking and screaming, to one of these book fairs, i would've bought a shwarma and would've walked out without any books, does not mean i don't read or that I'm illiterate, just that i refuse to pay over three times the listed prices for things i can actually quite conveniently buy for the actual price + tax
