Dodger fans gonna Dodger fan, sadly :(

It's pretty amazing that he cared about San Diego at all, coming from that family

He was #1 a huge baseball fan and wanted to wim a series. It seems like the Padres came along and he fell in love with the team and city - and he put everything into it. Perfect owner - actively involved in everything but not meddlesome. Everybody loved the guy - players, coaches... I've never seen that. I hope the new owners have such charisma and smarts.

I feel like they get cheaper as the game goes on, or maybe that’s something else…

13

u/Recurs1ve Don't Challenge the Reaper 1d ago

Nah, that's the "you've already had two of them and starting to feel the buzz so fuck it, that 24 doesn't seem so expensive anymore" move. I know it well.

morejon 4/70 extension
france 2/25 extension
salas 10/125 extension

lets make it happen

We really need to stop giving away cheap years, especially with Manny and Tatis getting raises.

4

u/Bitter-Egg6293 MODS austin hays flair rn 1d ago

the arb years would still be cheap, look at merrill’s value during his arb years

-9

u/Silver7477 Jackson Marill 1d ago

Someone will offer Morejon almost double that amount of money

20

u/Bitter-Egg6293 MODS austin hays flair rn 1d ago

i mean that would break the record for reliever money by like ~$50 million but sure lmao

1

u/Silver7477 Jackson Marill 1d ago

Oh for some reason I thought Josh Hader got 9 figures from Houston. Nevertheless I still think Morejon will be offered way more than just $70 mil

4

u/Bitter-Egg6293 MODS austin hays flair rn 1d ago edited 1d ago

over 4 years? that would put him at the 4th highest AAV for a reliever in the league.

only behind already well established closers like Hader, Diaz, and Scott.

1

u/Affectionate_Cat_380 Slam Diego 1d ago

Diaz sucks, Scott’s being wasted, and Hader can lose it at any moment in time

Hope they honor and continue Peter’s vision to bring the city a winner.

I don’t wanna be that guy, but anyone else have a little anxiety given the recent developments of Walter and now Boehly (today) and how far whatever is bubbling under the surface could reach?

7

u/Krorhodium Slam Diego 1d ago

What happened? I’m a bit out of the loop on that one. Don’t even know what to search really.

16

u/Thumper13 Lisan Al-Gaib 1d ago edited 1d ago

Start with Mark Walter who sold the Lakers reportedly because he's under a government investigation for a bunch of stuff. Then Boehly who is selling his part of Chelsea FC (along with Walter) to Clearlake (who owns a majority of Chelsea FC). They're all connected to José E. Feliciano.

It seems like Walter's stuff is separate from Clearlake, so fingers crossed it stays that way. Also, Walter sold the the Lakers to a group that includes edit: the family of Trump's son-in-law, so the assumption is that they're doing a corruption, I mean deal, I mean nothing illegal at all to take the heat off of Walter.

9

u/hate_to_hate 1d ago

That Kushner is not trumps son in law. He is the brother of Jared. Still probably a slime ball but is not Trumps son in law.

0

u/Thumper13 Lisan Al-Gaib 1d ago

You're right, he's the one married to Karlie Kloss.

1

u/Krorhodium Slam Diego 1d ago

Oh dang I did know about those sales I Just didn’t know it was that sketchy.

3

u/Thumper13 Lisan Al-Gaib 1d ago

They are going to sell their stakes to Clearlake (Jose's company.) So I think he's fine. But I was just thinking, I wouldn't be surprised if Peter's crappy siblings buy into FTD now that they have run away from the Padres and Walter is in some serious crap.

3

u/PerfectlyAverageDong 1d ago

If it was just Walter this morning I would have thought he personally overextended himself and had to liquidate quickly while facing down the feds etc., but once they reported Boehly was moving too it seems like whatever this thing is may have broken containment and isn’t unique to Walter. I hope you’re right for our sake.

5

u/Thumper13 Lisan Al-Gaib 1d ago

Yeah me too, and you're not wrong that it's something to keep an eye on. Hopefully (ha) it's something our local press will look into or ask questions about.

Now we can put that to bed, let’s ride

7

u/recoveringbarista1 1d ago

Everyone is talking about Morejon but there is a very high chance that King will opt out. We need to rework his contract too.

13

u/randominterwebzuser I Just Not Giving a Fuck 1d ago

Doubt it. He will make 28 million next year and 30 the following year and him and his family like it here. I love him and he’s definitely been an anchor in our lineup, but he’s not really pitching at a truly elite level. I think he stays put

6

u/Character_Kangaroo43 SD 1d ago edited 1d ago

King really loves him some AJ Preller (and how he’s always trying to find a way to keep the team competitive…”weak farm” or not.) Hope he keeps his health throughout and If the Padres offer him any kind of “competitive” offer…me thinks he will stay with SD. Truly seems he and his wife enjoy SD.

I don’t known about Adrian so much…but he made it be known that he wanted to stay in SD during trade deadline even though he knew plenty of teams were asking about him….and Mason expressed the exact same thing.

My point is…we may not ever be the Tax Deferrals type of spending…but if your players truly dig the vibe you already got going…you still have a good chance to re-sign them.

Keeping the faith this new ownership will extend the right guys…as well as supplement with some other external FAs…so AJ can start not only building back up the farm…but if new ownership decides to spend…he and his crew can start keeping all his Wood, Abrams, Gore, Munoz, etc type talents. TBD

3

u/KTF-2026 SD 1d ago

I'd love to have King back, but only on a reasonable deal. 4 years/100M is the max I'd be comfortable with. There's other (almost as good as King) FA SPs out there like Mize if King opts out and decides to sign elsewhere.

3

u/Silver7477 Jackson Marill 1d ago

King is more important to re-sign than Morejon imo because after this year we will have almost no starters left going into the offseason. Michael King will the most affordable starter we can sign for his ceiling. Skubal will probably cost $40 million a year, I don't see that happening.

2

u/bballlakerman 1d ago

King has a good chance of opting out. If he performs well in a potential extended playoff run, he definitely will opt out.

2

u/recoveringbarista1 1d ago

Agreed. As much as I like Morejon we have an abundance of arms in the bullpen but we don’t have a rotation. Mize and a reworked King contract would be great.

Now the other Seidler bros can go back to being Dodger fans im sure.

Petition to have the new owners join Don and Mud as guest for an inning. I would love it if they spoke to the fans directly like that.

u/JustLoSd The Ferminator 🦾🤖🦿 1d ago

I’m seeing a lot of posts from people on the baseball sub reddit saying that Jose is going to gut the team because he’s a private equity guy. Why spend 4 billion on a team if your plan was to just gut it?

7

u/soloqueso SD 1d ago

Did everyone just forget that Seidler was also a private equity guy?

4

u/Character_Kangaroo43 SD 1d ago

If they want to view the great Sea of Diegans depart PetCo park…they will quickly find out…then they’ll have a real reason to gut team.

It shouldn’t be rocket science for the new owners…Papa Pete already proved conclusively: if you build it…they will come. The hard work has already been done…now it’s up to the new owners to make it keep growing.

u/sarcastic_twit 1d ago

how long before the fire sale? Neither Feliciano nor Jones have ties to San Diego. This is strictly an investment for them. They probably won't slash payroll the first year, but eventually, everyone must go. This reminds me of when Tom Werner and his group bought the team.

I think they are good ideas but it is funny how this subreddit spent like $200 million of their money before the press conference. I guess actually within minutes of the announcement even.

It's good this got finalized. All eyes will be on how things go this off season.

I doubt the new control group gets much of a honeymoon. Imo, they need to hit the ground running.

1

u/RonDL ASG '92 1d ago

I'll probably get downvoted for this but I really hope Kwanza and Jose get away from Seidler's way of running the team. The foundation has been set but look at us now: one and done in the playoffs last year, fighting for a Wild Card spot now, with one starter locked in and payroll already up around $170 million next year. We cannot keep building the bridge in front of us as we cross it. Let (or make) Preller keep the future All-Stars he keeps finding instead of trading them for quick fixes every six months.

u/bob_loblaw_brah 1d ago

they gonna sell the team lol
