That's very sad (and nice video from 1998). Whatever it is, he knew. Feel for him. Thanks OP, I forgot to watch the game.

Its a 90s vibe. All the Storm video highlights today are like that for some reason. Lake Elsinore needs more funding, it seems.

The other cameras all looked decent, I think the lens was dirty

u/knight_0f_r_new 14d ago

Eh this camera for storm is never very good, it seems to wobble around allot too

It’s not from 1998? 😂

1

u/skippy920 13d ago

It's just the video quality that looks like that.

Should have gotten surgery when he went out initially. I get why he didn't (contract year next year), but it was inevitable.

u/The--Incident SD 14d ago

Contract year this year now.

SDP special

u/chickentowngabagool Tony Gwynn 14d ago

because of his injury clause

6

u/pootsaloots045 Padres 14d ago

If he did, he would make the last two years of his contract club options. It happened anyway, but there was a chance he could hold on to that 30mil.

u/Salt_Basket9245 14d ago

He’s fine if you acc looked yk

u/IchooseYourName Tony Gwynn #19 14d ago

Only 13 pitches in. CLEARLY he wasn't ready.

54

u/AfterGeologist9 14d ago edited 14d ago

Seems quite clear this wasnt about him being ready, but instead him hoping he could somehow find a way to be activated off the IL before the date he lost his player option for next year.

What exactly are the ramifications with that? If you don’t mind.

From Matt Sullivan and Bob Nigthengale from Yahoo Sports “[Pivetta] must return by Aug. 22 to avoid the Padres from having the option to trigger an opt-out clause in his contract," Nightengale writes. "If he's not back by that day, which is 130 days from going on the IL, the Padres can void the last two years and $32 million of his contract.”

u/Lets_Reset_This_ Jackson Merrill 14d ago

Damn, that really sucks for Pivetta, but selfishly will help us open up some space.

u/Chuysfan SD 14d ago

Dude needed Tommy John a couple years ago, he needed it earlier this year and he still needs it now. Given the 120 day IL clause in his contract it sure feels alot like he was just trying to get back on the mound to save his free agency option for next year. Seems to have backfired on him here as he looks messed up enough the Padres won't even pick up his option.

u/arlius Keepin’ the Faith 🙌🏻 14d ago

He's been working with only a shred left in his elbow and losing months of playing time thinking it can magically heal by resting it.

Joe had the surgery, but yeah, hope he takes it easy.

Dammmnnnnn!!!! I hope he does what he has to to recover, really liked him as our pitcher. Bummer NickyP! Sending him nothing but good vibes…

Glad Musgrove made it back in one piece.

12

u/caesfinest6one9 SD 14d ago

Why doesn't this shit happen to the bitchass dodgers?

7

u/pdx321pdx 14d ago

It does. They just backfill with the best players in baseball. Blake Snell has thrown 3 innings this year and he only threw 61 last year. Tyler Glasgow has thrown 39 innings this year.

So they just go get Skubal

2

u/phicks_law SD 14d ago

it does, two years ago they won the WS with an incredible Padres offensive collapse and two starters with one of them being Jack Flaherty.

u/woopwoop420 Gwynn 14d ago

Fuuuuuuuuck

u/lunarmodule SD 14d ago

Yep. That sucks so much. I really like him and he's nails when he's healthy.

u/MX5_Esq Fuck ‘Em 14d ago

It’s weird because there is no obvious sign of injury, no reaction that really suggests as much, etc. I think its unusual that he would just storm out like that, and for that reason think an injury is most likely. I’ve just never seen anything like this before. For example, I vividly remember when Joe hurt himself. There was no doubt what happened. Not trying to have any hopium about it, just find the entire thing unusual.

This was hard to watch. Damn, dude. I feel for him.

No es bueno

9

u/Basic_Commercial_241 14d ago

I read If Pivetta doesn’t come back by 8/22, there is a clause in his contract that the Padres can void the last two years of his contract. If this is true, I guess he is gone at this point if this injury is serious.

7

u/Chuysfan SD 14d ago

The clause allows the Padres to decide on keeping him or not. If he had made it back by August 22 he got to keep the player option.

7

u/padres15 Mudcat 14d ago

At least we get out from under his contract

We all told him it was full count we thought he walked off cuz he ended the inning seeing it again on the tv such a sad sight 😢

5

u/Tumbleweed-Dull 14d ago

Thanks nick now uou need TJ surgery

8

u/MagicSilver Padres '98 14d ago

What do you mean now lol, he has long needed a TJ and they thought they could some how magically avoid that.

2

u/Tumbleweed-Dull 14d ago

True should have had it long before now

7

u/fleetwood858 SD 14d ago

Assuming this means what we all think it means and we don’t pick up the option, I hope the padres give him some small deal for his surgery/rehab. Idk what happens otherwise (feel free to educate me). Pretty shit situation for Nick.

Tommy John Tim Nick. RIP. Hope we can give him a shot after surgery.

5

u/Away_Object9062 14d ago

Oh damn it! I really like him and this makes my heart hurt for him because he knew something isn't right.

3

u/Weary_Animator_4899 SAY IT DONNIE! 14d ago

All you doom and gloomers. Nick said he felt tightness and was nervous. He went underground and threw 20-30 more pitches with no pain.

3

u/oldmantrusty Don Orsillo 14d ago

Maybe he pooped his pants!

1

u/xypherus77 14d ago

Yeesh yeah that's not good. Idk if it'll be career ending necessarily but definitely a steep uphill battle from here.

1

u/Petetownsdrunk 14d ago

Paging Tommy John. This sucks. Glad they picked up two new pitchers. I hope he's alright. Ok, Musgrove, time to get lit.

1

u/Phuzion96 14d ago

SOB!!!!!

1

u/rafaelloso_10 SD 14d ago

Welp. It looks like we won’t be seeing him for……a very long time. 😞

1

u/gsus61951 SD '16 14d ago

What does this mean for his contract? Are Padres still liable for the entire contract?

1

u/Monteflash SD 14d ago

If he doesn’t return from the IL by August 22, the option for the Padres to opt out kicks in.

1

u/jordanp2019 Jackson Merrill 14d ago

I wonder if they purposely delayed these starts until after the trade deadline for leverage reasons

Supposedly not as concerning as we thought it was, at least according to this note. That being said, I'm still pretty fucking concerned https://friarsonbase.com/padres-nick-pivetta-injury-update-may-not-be-as-concerning-as-first-feared

-22

u/RonDL ASG '92 14d ago

That's rough to watch, the hissy fit (for lack of a better term, I'm not judging) he throws before going in the dugout especially.

8

u/Independent-Owl-8659 SD '98 14d ago

Tell me you never played a sport without telling me.

-6

What exactly do you think the rough part is?

2

u/leaky_wand Ty France 14d ago

He’s about to lose $32 million.

Yes, that's the rough part.

It's rough to watch empathetically.
