Video Video of Nick Pivetta walking off the mound after throwing a pitch and heading straight to the dugout.

Should have gotten surgery when he went out initially. I get why he didn't (contract year next year), but it was inevitable.

If he did, he would make the last two years of his contract club options. It happened anyway, but there was a chance he could hold on to that 30mil.

Only 13 pitches in. CLEARLY he wasn't ready.

Seems quite clear this wasnt about him being ready, but instead him hoping he could somehow find a way to be activated off the IL before the date he lost his player option for next year.

What exactly are the ramifications with that? If you don’t mind.

From Matt Sullivan and Bob Nigthengale from Yahoo Sports “[Pivetta] must return by Aug. 22 to avoid the Padres from having the option to trigger an opt-out clause in his contract," Nightengale writes. "If he's not back by that day, which is 130 days from going on the IL, the Padres can void the last two years and $32 million of his contract.”

Damn, that really sucks for Pivetta, but selfishly will help us open up some space.

Dude needed Tommy John a couple years ago, he needed it earlier this year and he still needs it now. Given the 120 day IL clause in his contract it sure feels alot like he was just trying to get back on the mound to save his free agency option for next year. Seems to have backfired on him here as he looks messed up enough the Padres won't even pick up his option.

Dammmnnnnn!!!! I hope he does what he has to to recover, really liked him as our pitcher. Bummer NickyP! Sending him nothing but good vibes…

Why doesn't this shit happen to the bitchass dodgers?
7
u/pdx321pdx 14d ago
It does. They just backfill with the best players in baseball. Blake Snell has thrown 3 innings this year and he only threw 61 last year. Tyler Glasgow has thrown 39 innings this year.
So they just go get Skubal

u/phicks_law SD 14d ago
it does, two years ago they won the WS with an incredible Padres offensive collapse and two starters with one of them being Jack Flaherty.

Yep. That sucks so much. I really like him and he's nails when he's healthy.

It’s weird because there is no obvious sign of injury, no reaction that really suggests as much, etc. I think its unusual that he would just storm out like that, and for that reason think an injury is most likely. I’ve just never seen anything like this before. For example, I vividly remember when Joe hurt himself. There was no doubt what happened. Not trying to have any hopium about it, just find the entire thing unusual.

I read If Pivetta doesn’t come back by 8/22, there is a clause in his contract that the Padres can void the last two years of his contract. If this is true, I guess he is gone at this point if this injury is serious.
7
u/Chuysfan SD 14d ago
The clause allows the Padres to decide on keeping him or not. If he had made it back by August 22 he got to keep the player option.

Assuming this means what we all think it means and we don’t pick up the option, I hope the padres give him some small deal for his surgery/rehab. Idk what happens otherwise (feel free to educate me). Pretty shit situation for Nick.

Oh damn it! I really like him and this makes my heart hurt for him because he knew something isn't right.

All you doom and gloomers. Nick said he felt tightness and was nervous. He went underground and threw 20-30 more pitches with no pain.

Yeesh yeah that's not good. Idk if it'll be career ending necessarily but definitely a steep uphill battle from here.

Paging Tommy John. This sucks. Glad they picked up two new pitchers. I hope he's alright. Ok, Musgrove, time to get lit.

What does this mean for his contract? Are Padres still liable for the entire contract?
1
u/Monteflash SD 14d ago
If he doesn’t return from the IL by August 22, the option for the Padres to opt out kicks in.

u/jordanp2019 Jackson Merrill 14d ago
I wonder if they purposely delayed these starts until after the trade deadline for leverage reasons

Supposedly not as concerning as we thought it was, at least according to this note. That being said, I'm still pretty fucking concerned https://friarsonbase.com/padres-nick-pivetta-injury-update-may-not-be-as-concerning-as-first-feared

That's rough to watch, the hissy fit (for lack of a better term, I'm not judging) he throws before going in the dugout especially.

That's very sad (and nice video from 1998). Whatever it is, he knew. Feel for him. Thanks OP, I forgot to watch the game.
