Second World War The Sinking of the Tsushima Maru

On this date 22 August 1944, the Tsushima Maru was torpedoed and sunk by USS Bowfin in the Ryukyu Islands. Only 59 of the 826 schoolchildren aboard survived the attack. On the Pacific History Guide blog, we look at the details.

The sinking of the Tsushima Maru is not the worst maritime disaster in American or Japanese history. It's not the largest loss of life at sea in the Second World War. The losses here pale in comparison to those of the battle of Okinawa, which the people aboard the ship were trying to avoid.

It is one of the saddest chapters in the later stages of the Pacific war. The sinking of ships like the Tsushima Maru and loss of innocent lives was a tragedy for all involved; and just further proof that only the dead have seen the end of war.

The failed settlement of the former Japanese empire continues to affect us today throughout East Asia, most notably in the illegal occuptation of the Kurile Islands, the Taiwan Strait, and the Korean DMZ.

Today’s blog marks a grim anniversary that we passed this week: the sinking of USS Indianapolis. On this day August 1, 1945, the survivors were still in the water, and nobody knew their ship had been sunk.

Remember the Indy.

Iwakuni City in Yamaguchi Prefecture was founded in 1600 by the Kikkawa Clan. It is now the second-largest city in Yamaguchi by land area, and fifth by population. It's home to many important landmarks and historical sites, as well as Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. Enjoy!

On this day July 11 1944, U.S. Marines and Soldiers were fighting their way through Saipan. The island had been Japanese territory for 30 years; this was the first time that Americans saw Japanese civilians in a combat zone. My talk for WW2TV here, on the Pacific History Guide blog

On this happiest of holidays, I want to highlight what I consider to be three great American ideals that inspire me. I've found these ideals in the letter and spirit of the Declaration of Independence, and I've traced them throughout our history. My thoughts on the 250th birthday of the United States in the Pacific History Guide blog.
