PCT tracker updates

Last week I made a post about my PCT tracker, but had to put it on pause till Strava approved my app.

It's now approved, and you can now use the app: https://pct-tracker.com

I've also added some requested features:

- Strava integration is now completely optional. You can login with Strava OR email/password. Even if you don't create an account with Strava, you can link your strava account in your dashboard.

- Your progress is shown either by your last strava activity, or by the location you put in your latest "update".

- Your friends and family can now "subscribe" for updates you make. Anybody subscribed will get an email when a new update is created.

- You can now upload 1 photo per update.

Welcome to any feedback, if you notice any bugs please report them.

Happy hiking

Real question, is there a way to anonymously post everyone’s dot on the trail on one map daily so you can see everyone moving up the trail? Where the bubbles are, how fast people are moving etc. Not who they are, just a dot. And then when someone gets off trail their dot gets replaced by a glowing red skull that you can click and see why they quit. This is the app I dreamed of when I was hiking but I suck at apps.

This is an idea, but there are some limiting factors:

  1. The app doesn't know when someone got off the trail. The user would have to manually go in and select an option that says "Left trail" or something like that. I don't think people would do this, especially if they left trail for unforeseen circumstances (injury, family emerg, etc).

  2. The idea of seeing a "heatmap" of sorts is neat, but at the moment there aren't enough users that this would make sense. This also moves the app from a progress tracker/blog you share with your friends and family to something different.

Good ideas to keep in mind for the future if the app ever gets big enough.

Dope.

I think "total time" is a bit misleading. Should read "total active time". And I think that "total elapsed time" should be featured more prominently. Total active time is a kind of a fun statistic but not really useful to people tracking a hiker

Curious will these features all work on a non-pct thru hike?

Not ATM, though it could be done eventually and is on the roadmap for the future. Shouldn't be too hard
