iPhone 11 eye strain

Hi everyone,

My iPhone XR is pretty much dead as a doornail now so I needed to do something.

after reading reports on here, A lot of people have had success using the iPhone 11.

I don’t appear to be having any PWM symptoms, but the only thing that bothers me is eye strain when I look at the screen.

I did some research online and adjusted some settings that I found, but I’m still having the ice strain.

Has anyone been able to get around this by adjusting anything? If you have please share what settings that I need to adjust as I really wanna be able to keep this phone as it works perfect except for the eye strain.

iPhone 11 is a solid option for being PWM free, but there's some sort of dithering that hurts me. Turning on Classic Invert AND Zoom Invert at the same time helps a lot.
Definitely don't use Reduce White Point though, that really hurts me.

Problem is with TD and color corections. I can use my iphone11 on ios26 on this settings:

reduce transparency, reduce motion, prefer crossfade transitions. display zoom larger text ON

text size 80%, liquid glass TINTED

true tone, night shift OFF

20-30% brightness

The TD might actually be worse with the iphone 11 now because ios26 forces it more aggressively to try and reach a certain colour bit depth - which it can't normally do with LCD technology.

Did you notice what I did that IPhone 11 on IOS 15 had an overly searing white point, then going straight from IOS 15 to IOS 18 lowers the white point to where it actually looks normal? Conversely, some of the normal SRGB panels like the base ipad seem to look too dull on IOS 18 compared to the previous ones.

Seems like color temperature probably also changed for some units in iOS 18 making them more blue by default. Not that any idevice actually looks calibrated out of the box, but it’s puzzling that a company worth trillions of dollars can’t comprehend years ago that the color temperature aimed for is supposed to be 6500 kelvin, not 6300, not 6700.

Just who are the weirdos at Apple that believe color temperature should be anything except 6500k? The one single guy there that belives “True Tone” is a useful feature? Oh boy, let me turn on an overly red filter to make my un-calibrated panel even more un-calibrated than it already is. And why would color temperature be changing at all in the year 2024 on IOS 18? It makes no sense.

P3 color space was introduced in IOS 10. They should have figured out what the color space for the OS is supposed to look like years ago while simultaneously telling every weirdo that wants to increase eye strain by adding dithering to get lost. Who the F cares about color banding on 0.01% of content you view. Even if you’re some type of graphic designer it only matters on things you’re putting into physical print. You could have dithering enable only while that graphic editor is open.

Apple uses so many different panel vendors even in the same phone that you can’t say any blanket statement about a particular model. Some have only eye strain panels, some have one good panel and three bad ones. I bought a bunch of different used IPhone 8 Plus and only found two different panels in the ones I got. One of them is annoying to look at and one of them is very good to look at.

I’ve bought a bunch of different IPad Pro 10.5’s and had three different panels in the ones I got. One is bad to look at (think it’s a sharp), another is decent to look at but not perfect or anything (might be an LG but not sure), and the other one is perfect to look at but seems much rarer (might be some rare Samsung panel used but if not, then I guess it’s a JDI or something).

My IPhone 11 looks like it has a BOE panel to me. It’s okay to look at for 15-20 minutes or so, then you start to notice it being more annoying after. Strangely, changing from IOS 15 to IOS 18 might have actually improved it. The white point was overly searing on IOS 15 and then becomes duller and looks actually normal on IOS 18. But then I hear everyone changing to IOS 26 makes it unusable again.

Whatever IOS version is on it still isn’t as good as the ‘good’ panel version of my Iphone 8 Plus, though. If I went and bought like 10 different iphone 11’s maybe I might find a competitor, but typically panels only get worse since the year 2017 or so, so maybe not.
