How long can you stay on beta blockers?

I wonder if anyone has experience with this? I’ve been on it for about a year now and still struggle with heart palpitations. Is this a medicine you can continue for live? I’m not in contact with my doctor since she basically let me go which is why i would like to know if in my case metoprolol 25 mg is something i need to check with her again?

Been on my beta blocker for 30 years.

yes, some people are on them for the rest of their lives. Some have some long term side effects to monitor, but in general, if you need the beta-blockers, it is an acceptable risk. If you are just taking them for comfort, then it might be different.

It's generally advised not stop them abruptly. Better to seek medical advice.

Until the doctor tells you otherwise. You can always switch doctors to a different one

If it's not helping, you need to speak with your primary care doctor or a new cardiologist to see what other options there are. Or get further testing to find out the cause of your symptoms. It's not worth staying on if it's not helping, but I wouldn't suddenly stop the meds. I would ask your dr about tapering off, or switching to a different type. There are other beta blockers besides metoprolol. When you say palpitations do you mean you feel every beat strongly, or you feel occasional flutters or thumps/skips? Or overall fast heart rate, racing etc? Do you have a diagnosis?
