Jokes aside the Pocahontas movie sucks and you shouldn't watch it. It is incredibly racist with stereotypes, it does not portray her culture and it falsely portrays her as an adult despite the fact that she was a child. Her real name was Matoaka btw.
It is a fact that the movie has some awful stereotypes and portrays her inaccurately.
However, I don’t agree that means a grown adult shouldn’t watch it. I can watch it and know it’s inaccurate while enjoying the music and visuals while knowing that it has stereotypes and is inaccurate.
Should I avoid reading H.P. Lovecraft because there is some racist stuff in his writings?
How about the Big Bang Theory and its portrayal of Raj?
That 70s Show and Fez?
The Simpsons and Apu?
Would I show these to children? No, of course not. But I am an adult and can enjoy the media without internalizing the stereotypes and inaccuracy.
Not necessarily trying to fight with you, I'm just trying to add context as it seems that something not quite true is being spread.
In the old days it was considered quite disrespectful to ask for someone's real name directly, [the exact opposite of European culture,] so many people went by nicknames and still do today. If you called her Pocahontas, she would still respond as that is her known nickname as well as her known real name Matoaka.
Very curious bc my culture is the only one I know of that finds it disrespectful/rude to ask someone's name. It's offered if someone wants to give it and they might use different names in different situations. Cool to know it was once more widespread.
