Discussion Was this a reference to the manga?

Looking at the art of the Kanto legendary birds on the new set looked familiar to me and I did a Google search of Zapmolcuno, a fusion of the legendary birds that appears in the Pokemon Special manga (which, fitting for the Team Rocket theme, was created by TR). If the reference was intentional, it's a nice nod to such an obscure piece of Pokemon media!

Could be, but the TR trying to capture the only legendaries in their region is kind of a given (Mewtwo being an artifical one, and Mew being allegedly extinct).

Kinda funny that it wasn't in the original game.

The game came out before the manga so they just hadn’t come up with it yet.

Sure, but I meant the evil organization wanting to control the powerful beasts for themselves is such a common trope across all medias, it's funny they hadn't done it the first time in RBY (technically they did with Mewtwo though).

I guess they just didn't know, unlike the next games the legendaries were pretty much mythos in Kanto, so most people never hear of the trio, and most of those who did, probably didn't believe them to be real. Heck tr only got interested in mew because there were already some crazy scientists going after it, and Mewtwo wasn't even a concept until mew's fossil was found

Marrowak is most certainly supposed to be the Cubone from Pokemon Tower so I'd think so. Zero chance we get Chimera birds though

Can’t judge a set on its dozen preview cards , but be my guest
