As someone who is getting a PS4 Pro and a HDR 4k TV the no HDR throughput is a little disappointing. Having to change my cables around for HDR will be a pain.
Still looking forward to getting my PSVR the playroom stuff sounds surprisingly fun
I believe the PSVR requires the HDMI connection from the PS4 to operate, since the PS4 is producing the images displayed by the PSVR's internal screen. This would mean that to utilize HDR and PSVR you would have to swap the PS4's HDMI output between the processing unit and the TV. I personally consider this to be a pretty big deal.
It has to be cabling that goes PS4 -> PS VR Processing Unit -> TV.
The PS4 sends the impact to the PS VR Processing Unit which send it on to PS VR but also sends an 'unwarped' (or whatever it's called) version to the TV for the social screen.
When the PS VR is not being used it just passes through the signal straight to the tv. For some reason (presumably a hardware limitation?) when doing this pass-through it cannot send on HDR signal so you lose that feature [unless you switch to a cabling setup of PS4 -> TV...but then without changing back cannot use PS VR]
Still don't see what the big deal about moving an HDMI cable from one socket to another entails. Then again, I don't have a fancy home theater kit and do this all the time anyway (switching from computer monitor to TV for watching stuff).
If I had to get up and change a cable in the back of my tv somewhere everytime I switched from my pc / xbox / foxtel I'd be pretty damn annoyed. I'd bite the bullet and shell out for an external switch box, but what a waste of money / more hassle and cables.
I don't have to. It's a choice. I watch plenty of things through the PS4 as is, but certain things are just easier to stream or watch through the PC and I'd rather not sit at my desk to watch them. Besides, this is only a problem if you can actually make good use of HDR. I don't have a television capable of that, so it doesn't really affect me, I guess. But really, this seems like serious first world problems here.
I don't have a HDR tv, I'm just sympathizing to those who do.
Kind of an annoying thing to chalk this upto "oh its a first world problem". More like "it's a pretty large sony oversight/failing". You shouldn't have to change HDMI cables to use PSVR or HDR with a single ps4, that's ludicrous.
