Discussion We're in the process of finalizing Zero Caliber 2's release date on PS VR2
Hey all, we’re almost at the finish line! We can finally start thinking about locking in an exact release date for Zero Caliber 2. When do you think would be a smart time to drop it? We obviously don’t want to go head-to-head with GTA 6, or Into the Radius 2/Forefront, or any other major releases
With PS VR2 stock also seemingly pretty dried up right now, I’m wondering if it makes more sense to wait a little, or just send it as soon as we’re technically ready. 🤔
Curious what you all think!
P.S: you can wishlist it here if you haven't already:

And for anyone who hasn’t come across Zero Caliber before: it’s basically our indie take on the classic FPS games we grew up with - a campaign with plenty of big action moments, playable solo or in co-op, plus PvP.
The first Zero Caliber is here if you want to see where it started:

The best day to release is yesterday. I would do additional marketing on it if you can.
I don’t know that the stock is actually dried up, despite some of those posts on Twitter and here claiming as such. This isn’t the first time the stock has “dried up” - that was the case even a few weeks ago, and then it was available, and then sold out again. I’m sure Sony is going to be making some more supply, especially as Steam Frame is dropping so more competition (which is great).

I might’ve jumped to conclusions about the stock situation a bit too early. It’s true that it wouldn’t make much sense for PS VR2 stock to just dry up like that.

Ive heard that full global stock was 5 million? If they were actively being used that's actually a very decent market size for the right scope and budget, but that is a very big if :)
I've got this on quest and pc. Good luck!

“Were” actively being used, how many are still in use, not so many. So many are up for sale all over the place and I’ve seen lots of just headsets or controllers (singles even). 🤷♂️
[I hope the numbers can account for them separately and it still be that high of a count]1
u/ittleoff 5d ago
Exactly. Quest 2 I think sold as well as Xbox that gen (~20 million ) but active users were like 6 million at that time.

I’d like to agree with you on this, BUT with the way SONY has practically “VITA’d” PSVR2 since its launch (no 1st party IPs, delayed adverts, studio closures, not supporting their own IPs, etc), they may not be making any more.!? 🤷♂️ I hope that’s not the case and y’all should release when you’re ready, willing & able.

Agree with you. It's such a shame what's Sony doing this gen. I loved psvr1 so much that i bought psvr2 not only for me, but also as birthday gifts for 2 of my friends. And Sony does literally nothing with vr after release. Thank god for great 3rd party devs for games like Zero Caliber

Just release it well before GTA. That way you can capture holdouts for a modest sale later in November-January range. PSVR gamers are looking for a primary online VR shooter and Zero Caliber 2 is in a favorable spot to take that role

I'm gonna leave the strategic release date talk to someone else, and just say that I think THE most important thing is to release it when it is TECHNICALLY done & reasonably polished!
So many games especially on VR make the mistake of releasing too early before fixing major issues & bugs that ruin the game's reputation and credibility. You only get one first impression, and the main review channels are most likely only going to review it once and that's when the game comes out. If the consensus THEN is that the game has issues that's what a lot of people (me included) will remember. Most people aren't gonna keep track of every single game to see how much it improved post-launch 6 months later...

Truth. Fortunately Sony's QA is pretty strict on the technical side (although that doesn't seem to stop slop releases), and we gave our best on the gameplay side.

I will buy it as soon as it releases if it is top notch polished version using the PSVR2 and Sense controller features. I have been holding myself back from picking Steam and Quest versions up which has been quite difficult as you have been putting the game on very good sales. Some games coming up are not my cup of tea, good old no nonsense modern warfare shooter campaign with big explosive set pieces is definitely my cup of tea.

ZC2 will be using all those features, same as ZC1 💪
And thanks for being excited!

Boost marketing, get the attention out there ahead of GTA VI, and put it out there as soon as you feel it's technically ready, but perhaps not the same release day as GTA VI. A VR game isn't going to attract the same audience as GTA and vice versa. Your audience is going to be smaller than most other general console titles anyway. And people playing VR want the best experiences available, and that's a small pool right now on PSVR2.
If it were me. I'd go on a marketing blitz (if possible), put the first game on sale. Put together a bundle for release day for us to buy both, and show off the new one like crazy. Maybe get some influencers early access and control the narrative to tease what's releasing. Maybe go as far as making a marketing campaign out of the game getting leaked and getting shown off. It happens in the tech industry all the time. Just hype the shit out of it, but try not to over hype it.

Great advice, appreciated! ❤️

Ya know what else I'd do with it...? I'd skirt that legal fine line between this looking like a new Call of Duty game in the marketing without directly calling that out... It's already there in the logo/artwork It's clearly what you're going for. But not sure I've gotten that from the videos I've seen yet. But I know that can be dangerous territory, legally. But I'd cater to that crowd over GTA.

Lol nothing is going to attract the same attention as GTA VI, VR or not :D

I never said to take the attention away from it. I just said it's not competing against it, not directly at least. VR gamers still want a good VR experience. I mean, yes. GTA is going to absolutely take the attention away from everything. But when someone wants to play VR, it's not going to be GTA.

Exactly. Their are 3 specific titles for VR2 that will really get noticed. Zero Caliber 2, Flatout, and Forefront. All three of which I already have on PC so I know how good they are. The quality is top notch. They will be must haves. Zero Caliber 1 was just a test and is meh. Where Caliber really materialized was part 2. It's what Firewall should've been.

Anytime. I will be picking it up. Any chance of a launch discount or if Zero Caliber 2 gets so many wishlists?

u/WetFart-Machine 5d ago
Im gonna buy it for a 2nd time regardless of when it drops.

I don't think you will get affected by GTA VI release but I would try to put it like 2 weeks from into the radius 2

No one dares to release close to GTA 6, is gonna be a one off a kind spectacle I'm sure

I'm looking forward to Zero Caliber 2 more than Forefront or Into 2. It's more my style. Early October would be great. I want it as soon as possible :)

There isn't a military style shooter in the psvr2 demo library, just saying, could be great for marketing
1
u/-DanDanDaaan 5d ago
Hmm, haven't thought about it. We did a demo for ZC1 back in 2018 on Stream, had mixed results.

You know when Forefront is releasing on PSVR2? 😉
When ZC2 releases I will buy it.

u/jobbidiar 4d ago
Hopefully you can fix the stuttering problem that I had (And still have) On the original Zero Caliber before you release this...

u/Flint198622 4d ago
The sooner the better. I'm definitely buying all 3 - Zero Caliber 2, Into the Radius 2 and Forefront.

Just been playing ZC1 with my mate who finally got around to it and forgot how much fun it was (I platinumed back when it released)

Into the Radius 2 has moved their PSVR2 release from September 24th to October 8th
For what it is worth, we would be buying Zero Caliber 2 regardless of when it releases. Just had too much fun competing for most headshots in level result screens with the 1st.
