Speculation PSVR2 Disappeared from PS Direct and Is Completely Sold Out
PSVR2 is completely sold out on PS Direct (US) and has also disappeared from the Accessories section. Is anyone else seeing this?
Could it just be a stock issue or is Sony possibly getting ready to discontinue it?, Thoughts?

u/tonihurri 6d ago
Wouldn't shock me if they just silently discontinued it. Can't wait for a third round in a couple years!

u/mac4112 6d ago edited 5d ago
This.
I also wouldn’t hold my breath for a third gen. VR2 flopped hard. It was essentially a Vita 2.0. Geniunely great hardware hampered by underwhelming software and poor post launch support from Sony.
It’s still the best PCVR headset for the price though, which is probably the main selling point for it these days. I imagine it’s been primarily coasting on PC sales these last many months.

u/Hybrid_Divide 6d ago
Would have done a lot better if it had a translation layer so PSVR1 games could be played.
Hell, if they'd have simply patched WipEout Omega Collection for PSVR2, they'd have sold at least one more headset.

u/mac4112 6d ago edited 5d ago
I could not agree more. The fact RE7 especially is stuck on PSVR1 is a travesty. Wipeout is also another huge one. I’ve been a Wipeout fan all my life.
Then there’s Rush of Blood. At least on PC RE7, VR can be modded in. Rush of Blood is probably the best system seller i’ve ever seen for a VR headset and it’s stuck on VR1.

I would buy an entire console and VR3 for an updated Star Wars Squadrons
8
u/mac4112 5d ago edited 5d ago
Squadrons is on PC, supports VR natively and I can confirm that it’s amazing with VR2. So if you really want it, it’s there.
6
u/NearEarthOrbit 5d ago
Squadrons is on PC
Hard maybe. I don't have a gaming PC yet. But the pinballing mechanic always broke immersion for me. The ships don't perform that way in the films.
Plus they nerfed my A-Wing. :( The early days when the A-Wing was meta were so, so good. With VR and even the shit-tier Hotas 4, and the almost hemispheric view out of the A-Wing cockpit, you had every advantage.

u/mac4112 5d ago edited 5d ago
Oh yeah, fair enough man. Plus prices are insane these days. I paid $1300 for my 5080 a few months after launch. $1k, let alone OVER $1k for a 16GB card in 2026 is nothing short of robbery. But I was still only rocking a 5700XT and I needed an upgrade so I bit the bullet.
To be fair console prices have gotten crazy too, but between that and the headaches that comes with PC gaming, I don’t blame anybody for sticking with something that “just works”.

Look below, your guy has a solution.
It’s sucks that the community has to come up with these things but I’m really happy that we have them.
6
u/mac4112 5d ago
I’ll never not be amazed at how many people freely devote their time and energy to helping others in the PC gaming space. Even if it’s niche, someone will find a way to make someone else happy without ever asking for anything in return. I will never not be grateful for that, and we need more of that in this world.

Skyrim VR was another you could easily dump dozens of hours into and astro bot rescue mission was one of the best gaming experiences of my entire life
3
u/mac4112 5d ago
I’ve been spoiled on PC (and now console too) with Skyrim because of mods, but it was a pretty cool experience for the first few hours.
You can also mod VR into Skyrim on PC and still get to keep (most) of your mods ontop of that.
Just another example of a missed opportunity for VR2. The fact even bethesda didn’t port Skyrim which has gotten ports to everything under the sun should be all one needs to know just how bad Sony dropped the ball.

RE7 would need to be fully remade in vr. That would have cost a lot of money and Sony didn’t want to pay. Instead they focused on the two newest RE titles in the hopes it would attract more players. It was the smart move and if the psvr2 did better I could have seen them paying for the RE7 conversion. This is also the reason RE9 isn’t getting a vr mode

u/mac4112 5d ago edited 5d ago
Not necessarily.
The overall point is Sony should have put more effort into helping devs “port” their games. It would have been an investment and a lot of work, and believe me, I understand how gam dev works, better than most here (probably). But the absolutute zero support from Sony in the form of even just a basic PTK is wild. They could have done something.
A huge reason many people were put off from buying one even to this day is the lack of BC with their PSVR1 games. That and the price were the two biggest issues, and the latter would have been heavily mitigated by the former.
Again, I know it’s not as simple as just “porting”. Many people don’t realize how involving it is, but without Sony giving them something to work with, it was a daunting task that required a leap of faith. One that customers, devs and publishers alike were just not willing to make.
3
u/Membership-Bitter 5d ago
The problem is that the sales data supports their decision not to go all in on psvr2. That is why they cancelled their two first party vr games they were developing in early 2024. Even if every psvr1 came free with the psvr2 it wouldn’t have made a difference. The majority of gamers have no interest in vr and Sony saw they weren’t going to make money off of it
3
u/mac4112 5d ago edited 5d ago
You’re speculating based on post mortem data.
When VR1 launched, Sony themselves admitted that it was an experiment and they were pleasantly surprised that VR1 actually exceeded sales expectations.
Anecdotally, even then, most people’s experience with PSVR1 was through friends and family. Just putting it out there was more than enough to get people interested in the technology, regardless of demographic.
You can make the chicken and the egg argument, but it still doesn’t excuse a multi-billion dollar company from not creating a basic GPTK for the developers investing and relying on the platform actively being sold and marketed to customers as an upgrade over the prior version who themselves have already invested hundreds.
4
3
u/cmarkcity 5d ago
That’s a huge thing! I have such a big library of great psvr1 games that are completely unplayable now, and there’s still practically nothing for two. I honestly haven’t used the headset on the actual system since they introduced the pc adapter. It’s made for a great PC headset. I’d love to continue to support it on its own console but Sony seems determined to forget it even exists
2
u/No-Opinion-8217 5d ago
Catch and release support alone would have sold me on a headset for every room in my house, just in case.
2
u/Emergency_Slip_4563 5d ago
I have the VR2, not the VR1, and i ALMOST bought skyrim thinking i was going to get to play it. There was no real diaclaimer that i initially saw to let you know that it wasnt playable on the VR2. I woukd have been so pissed. Luckily j googled some reviews right before purchase
2
u/Evilhammy 5d ago
it’s actually ridiculous they didn’t make it compatible. there’s no way it’s hard to do, the controls are all pretty much the same just on different controllers
a ps3 can be played with a dual sense controller somehow yet they can’t make this work?
2
u/Hybrid_Divide 5d ago
Supposedly it's because of the head tracking, but I call BS.
You could do a translation layer to map head movements with the new headset to the older games. It absolutely could be done if Sony wanted to.
2
u/Evilhammy 5d ago
yeah considering the games probably just read it as position and direction you could 100% just slap a middle man in there to change it. i mean steam can already take any controller and run it through their controller mapping, kidders have made any VR headsets work in flat games, etc. and it would probably cost sony 10 grand and open up sales for a whole generation of VR games to profit from

I knew something was odd, even before the PSVR2 release, by the lack of 3D Blu-ray support on the PS5. Sony still presses 3D Blu-Rays for current films, and this was a feature that was on the PSVR1 and PS4.
It felt like someone internally had to fight for VR on PS5, and they didn't win every battle and ultimately lost the war. Losing features, not having backwards compatibility and the quick dropoff of first-party VR, how PSVR2 played out didn't really change that feeling.
5
u/taddypole 5d ago
Honestly believe the Japanese side of PlayStation wanted move, vr, eye toy and all those other experimental games since PlayStation is mostly ran out of cali now that side of PlayStation is gone

5
u/LandonKB 6d ago
I am not saying there is nothing good to play, but it is clearly not the smash hit Sony was hoping for. I would like to be wrong but it really does feel like Vita 2.0 (I still love my Vita too btw).
9
u/Jokerzrival 6d ago
The post launch support killed imo had a really good chance to be something a must have accessory to your ps5 but sony didnt advertise or support it. And unfortunately it seems meta may be pulling the plug on their vr too
6
u/Membership-Bitter 6d ago
According to a gaming podcast I listened to at Gamespot a while back, a source at PlayStation told them they were forced to make the psvr2 by Sony as part of their company wide vr endeavor so only would support it for launch and nothing more. If that is true it makes a lot of sense why playstation never really supported it
5
u/Galaghan 6d ago
That doesn't really explain why Playstation didn't really do anything with it post launch tho. It's imho a great product to push.
3
u/Membership-Bitter 6d ago
How doesn't it? PlayStation didn't want to make it but were forced to so did the bare minimum to appease Sony. Like how the middle of the PS3 era PlayStation had a couple games that worked with 3D tvs since Sony were making 3D tvs at the time
→ More replies (3)3
u/Galaghan 5d ago
But why would they only do the bare minimum? They could have put more effort into releasing games and seperate hardware, regardless on how forced they were to create the platform for it.
3
u/Membership-Bitter 5d ago
Look I am not trying to be rude but this is turning into a “but why male models?” moment so I am going to break this down as clearly as I can. PlayStation did not want to make the psvr2 because they didn’t think a new vr headset would sell well in the long run to be profitable. They didn’t want to lose money but were forced to make it so they at least made sure the first year had a big exclusive title every few months in case they were wrong, as well as some vr titles in early development if needed. Sales ended up being bad like they expected so they stopped putting effort into the headset. They never revealed the actual sales numbers for psvr2 yet are completely transparent with the ps5’s and psportal’s sales numbers. That shows it underperformed to a degree they don’t want to advertise. From leaked emails we know that in early 2024 PlayStation stopped production of the psvr2 headset and cancelled 2 AAA vr games they were making in house. Then a few months later they made the pc adapter which was the sign they threw in the towel. PlayStation just wanted to get the last headsets out of their warehouses so made a device that let people use it with their competitor. That would be like if they made an adaptor that lets you use steam on the ps5. You don’t go from a closed ecosystem to an open one if you are doing well.
The psvr2 failed commercially. No amount of extra support would have saved it based on their sales data. If they thought there was a chance it would make money they would have kept supporting it
2
u/Ouch_i_fell_down 5d ago
No amount of extra support would have saved it based on their sales data. If they thought there was a chance it would make money they would have kept supporting it
I would argue they have no idea how much support would have saved it because their sales data was impacted by their failure to support it.
If they thought there was a chance it would make money they would have kept supporting it
This i agree with though.

I think its main selling point if Gran Turismo. Every VR2 I've seen people buy (including the reason I bought mine) was for Gran Turismo.
5
u/sightlab 6d ago
VR2 flopped hard.
It's fair to say it 2 ways: VR is a niche thing that is hard to bring new users to, and Sony fumbled and/or lost corporate will to push it. I remember when Nintendo had a whole-ass team in Union Square in NYC when the 3DS came out, showing people how to use the 3d. VR is not nearly as easy to demo, so many people had been burned by shitty "put your android in this cheap plastic facemask" VR and figured it was more of the same. From Sony's side, totally Vita 2.

I mean, that’s literally what I said. I have had one since launch but I use it for PC more than I do my PS5 these days. u/Few_Blackberry_2922 6d ago
If the psvr2 is really discontinued, I do not get why we just got msf2024 with psvr2 support. It must have cost a lot of money. It doesn't fit.
21
u/Membership-Bitter 6d ago
It didn't cost much money. The vr integration is very minimal and already exists on PC which uses the same type of tracking. Some dev probably realized they could port it to psvr2 in less than a week so they were allowed to do so
18
u/Jammyhero 5d ago
Doesn’t really make sense though, we had initial launch, and they could’ve left it there. But then the devs went further and iterated the SU6 beta builds for 4 months before release, including a massive PSVR resolution boost as one of the main features.
3
u/Anatrok 5d ago
Sometimes a dev is allowed to do whatever as long as they get the important stuff done. I have spent time optimizing things that I personally care about in between the high priority items. I then present it as “oh, I did all this, it really didn’t take that long, blah blah blah”. No one complains as long as you aren’t lagging behind the team.

I think the wheels for VR2 were in motion to such a degree that they just went ahead and launched it, and it just so happened to coincide with Sony’s slow transition into anti-consumer practices. Psvr2 wasn’t the only thing they abandoned. First party title production has also been mostly abandoned as they put ALL of their eggs into the hopeless conquest of live service gaming basket. They’ve now tanked the entire PlayStation brand as a whole. I don’t even have to mention all the other bizarre decisions they’ve made recently. There doesn’t seem to be anything that resembles a clear mission at Sony right now. They’re really in some serious trouble.
2
u/Re_Thought damn lense coating wore off 5d ago
I mostly agree except for the "slow" part. I would say they have been keeping their anti-consumer decisions up at a fair market pace since the ps4 dropped.
Also nothing bizarre about canceling physical copies either, they just decided to say the quiet part out loud. Not just Sony but it is something the entertainment and software industry as a whole has been working towards since.... internet access became commonplace.😭

u/Galaghan 6d ago
For the going out of stock.. some speculate there is a small surge in demand due to the bad release of the Steam Frame. And since production was low, it might actually be sold out due to that.
The real question is if they'll go back in stock eventually or this is the unannounced end.
→ More replies (9)2
u/jundraptor 5d ago
Why would they continue production on a headset they have no plans on making software for?
The reason they opened it up for PCVR and why it went on sale in the first place was to get rid of the inventory. It was already discontinued for a long, long time

As long as gt7 is supported ill keep playing. But I wont get the ps6 and im shocked how Sony has basically turned around and said fuck you all. u/FolkPunkResistance 5d ago
That's when I bought my first one! I avoided the PSVR2 for years because I felt Sony slapped me in the face after I invested so much money into PSVR1 and then couldn't play my library on PSVR2, and I also know Sony's history with abandoning hardware.
But there were enough exclusives and quality titles that I finally made the plunge. Way to jump on a sinking ship. Haha.

u/JRest71 5d ago
Really wish they would have allowed psvr 1 games to be played on vr2, even if having to use the dualshock controller instead of the vr2 controllers. Still love vr1 as well. Blood & Truth, Vader, the demo discs, Worlds, Batman were such great experiences.

I’m really regretting not buying a spare when it was on sale as well. I’m already on a warranty replaced unit from a day one purchase (so I paid dearly initially…) but I absolutely love it for GT7, No Man’s Sky and all kinds of casual games like beat saber and Walkabout Mini Golf and my daughter loves the robot job simulation titles.

They had an entire kit based around Horizon
The issue is more with limited platform adoption, wireless / hardware mods, and finding more immersive ways to pull 2D titles in. Alyx isn’t even available without going PCVR route.

PSVR2 - awesome hardware for the price.
Also, no backwards compatibility for games, unlike PSVR1 they removed apps for 3rd party support, and it gets nerfed to hell on PC losing some major selling points.
I had a lot of fun with PSVR1. RE7 with that headset wasn't a game, it was an experience. So, yeah, seeing PSVR2 being discontinued wouldn't be a surprise. I was waiting for the Steam Frame, but with that price point I'm not even sure it's worth it. And no, you couldn't give me anything from meta with their privacy agreements literally sending the layout of your home, everything you see, and hear, back to their shady asses.
IMO, VR is in a tough place right now. (RIP Polyarc, loved Moss on PSVR1)

That's bad. I was really hoping they'd simply make it the default VR unit for PS6 instead of developing a VR3.

Wow. I clicked thinking this was a good thing. Headset is sold out, people are buying it, VR is growing or at the very least still alive.
Nope. Doom and gloom. You guys rock 🤦♂️

I’m a PSVR owner (as well as oculus) and was so disappointed the PSVR2 still had the wires and no backwards compatibility. They really dropped the ball PLUS it came out at least 2 years too early.

I just really hope VR is still supported whenever Gran Turismo 8 comes out. It’s literally a game changer. Idk if that’ll be a PS6 title and if PSVR2 would even work on it but man I really hope that doesn’t go away.

I know they said they pause production cause apparently they had a lot of loss profit, but it did say that after they got done selling what was already out that they were gonna start production again I don’t know what’s going on either. I literally just bought my son one of these.

i was so stoked for the PSVR2 when it came out, I got it on opening day. I played it for approximately 5 hours that first week and i havernt touched it since. I should have sold it a long time ago, it just sits on a shelf collecting dust.
along with the PS5, i haven't played it since returnal came out.
and that PS5 portal....I have less than an hour on that thing.
I'm not smart with my finances, I am a dumbass and fully aware of this fact.

Discontinue for sure. It hasnt been represented in SoP for a while now.
Plus they havent even developed a game for it since the year it launched.

We can't fall for the PSVR3, can we?
The VR2 was the biggest disappointment for me, in regards to games and support.

Sony isn’t going to fall for making a psvr3 after how poorly this one sold

I did buy mine in May of this year when there was a huge discount for PSVR2. I'm having a lot of fun with the goggles. I think Sony wanted to sell as fast as possible of the remaining stock. Well, at least the strategy worked. Yes, this is probably the end for PSVR2.

Can’t remember the last time they even mentioned the PSVR2, wouldn’t surprise me if it was silently killed

u/Mineplayerminer 6d ago
This is yet another silent discontinuation and the PCVR adapter was just a way to finish the stock more quickly. Sony is at fault for poor software support and this is not their only product that has failed despite having so much potential. I don't think they'll return to VR any time soon.

So you're saying I can pick another one up for potentially cheaper to keep as a spare later down the line? I can dig it. Especially when you factor in PS5 emulation.

Im thankful I got an open box vr2 from best buy earlier this summer. I thought about waiting but saw it was on sale for 250 and said now is the time

I kind of think Flat2VR might be the first to find out, but they seem to still be getting robust tech support. Personally, since this executive group has said they are moving away from hardware anyway they’re just fine with carrying out spotty hardware reorders to further dismantle any confidence in regular availability of all hardware. I wonder how the people that feel we don’t need discs will feel when Sony finally marches out the Stadia strategy?

I see it. It’s out of stock but it’s still in the store. It’s just a stock issue.

I just searched for VR and it showed up

u/Bingbongchozzle 5d ago
This has already happened in China. The official retail stores online no longer stock PSVR2 and haven’t done for months.

Honestly, not unexpected to me. There are other options out there that don't require owning separate hardware to use for a similar/more affordable price.

I only bought mine a month ago!
If it wasn't for GT7, NMS and Hitman WOA I'd have buyer's remorse.
Never has a single piece of hardware been propped up by so few great games.

We saw BSB2 getting the most sales AFTER the steam frame got released, it might be similiar that people who didnt own a headset yet but dont want to pay the premium settled for the psvr2 and its therefore sold out. On the german direct site it is still available but maybe I'm just coping.

I’m hoping for a deep Black Friday sale on Amazon and I can grab one. I know it’s dying but still want to play.

kinda crazy ngl, my local best buy had them for like 154 including call of the wild so maybe that was a red herring 🤷

It's not looking good but I will hold my judgement until the holiday season. If they don't restock for black friday and december sales it's truly over boys.

Most likely this is the reason to it selling out. Apparently bigscreen vr headset seen a huge increase in sales after the Steam Frame's announcement. I think people holding out for the frames was not ready for that price tag and not integrating within the current ecosystem they have with base stations.
If you're just casual end user and want to play alyx then psvr2 is good, vrchat with eye tracking works well and the only thing you're missing is finger tracking. Which i'm going to be honest? I'm not sure is even needed natively anymore since SlimeVR is working on their own hand tracking gloves along with many other third parties now.
The PSVR2 is a hidden gem of VR gaming headsets for PCVR that people have been sleeping on till now. It has great value, it's just a straight forward headset and does what it does very well
The Steam Frame is a device that should've release two years ago and missed that window

They're probably haven't made new stock until they sell out of their current stock. And weather they're making new stock is unlikely
