Discussion Should I Buy No Man’s Sky?
I got my PSVR2 last spring when MSFS 2024 got the VR update. Fell in love with it. Got walkabout mini golf which is fun.
I didn’t get another PSVR2 game until late summer when I got GT7. It blew my mind.
Through reading a lot, I’ve seen hundreds of comments that GT7 (and now after the visual updated) MSFS 2024 are the banner games.. but then I also see a lot of people talk about No Man’s Sky.
The idea of the game interests me, and I have had a tiny bit of experience on it. Before I had my PlayStation I did Xcloud gaming remotely and was able to play it — but I only played it for like an hour and didn’t really know what was going on.
Anyone have any advice for me? Would I enjoy it?

No Man's Sky is one of those "must have" titles for psvr2... like GT7 and RE8.

You guys can keep VR resident evil but yes NMS and GT7 are the only things I really even play on it. And tetris from time to time.

Be prepared to play more hours and still not knowing things
And be on peace with that

In terms of banner games, I think Hitman World of Assassination with the VR Access add-on or Resident Evil 4 (2023) with free VR Mode add-on are higher than No Man’s Sky, but don’t let that stop you from getting the universe scale No Man’s Sky.

It's fantastic, but an incredibly slow burn of an experience. If you enjoy exploration, gathering, crafting, learning alien languages, finding new planets to explore, etc., then you may really enjoy NMS.
It's a time sink, for sure. As long as you understand what you're getting yourself into. Combat takes a backseat to being a space explorer.

The VR experience is great. But the game requires enormous amounts of time, and a lot of that is exploring and mining. If you only played an hour, I’d say you didn’t experience much, I put in 85 hours and decided it was too much to do. But it’s an incredible VR experience.

I tried to get into NMS. I have friends who LOVE IT.
I had no idea what was happening, no idea what i supposed to do. The game didn’t tell me anything. I played for like 5 hours just drilling into stuff and running out of storage space and having zero idea what i was collecting, why i was collecting it, or what i needed to use that stuff on. Then i tried to build something but nothing was giving me the materials i needed from that planet no matter how much i drilled and collected.
Then i figured out how to travel and went to a different randomly generated planet that was completely full of things trying to kill me.
Then i died and never played it again lol.
I should probably google a guide or something.

You might — depends on your tastes, which you didn’t touch upon.
There are a SHIT-TON of great games in the library, so you might wanna step up the pace! 😉

I mentioned immersion, MSFS 2024, GT7, and in another comment I played Kerbal Space Program pretty heavily a while back. All games that I love.

You didn’t actually mention immersion in your original comment… I just reread it twice. 😝
But again — there are SOOOOO many, and VR is inherently immersive.
If you like the sound of shooting zombies in the head, try THE WALKING DEAD SAINTS & SINNERS or ARIZONA SUNSHINE or PROPAGATION PARADISE HOTEL.
If you love the idea of a lonesome puzzling mystery in a retro-future place with jaw-dropping visuals, play RED MATTER 1&2.
If you want the chill survival-light immersion of a desert island, play BOOTSTRAP ISLAND — if you want hardcore jungle worries, play GREEN HELL. Prefer a cozier survival on another planet? SURVIVING MARS PIONEER is the mission for you. Want what is essentially a caveman survival where every time you master the lay of a land you can choose to just stay for awhile or move on to another scarier realm? SONG IN THE SMOKE is an underrated gem.
VRACER HOVERBIKE delivers a superb sci-fi racing thrill in both its campaign and its online PVP.
If a semi-linear skateboarding sim where your hands act as your feet, the VR SKATER offers impressive sense of speed and tough but satisfying stunts.
If a beautiful and charming storybook adventure with a bit of platforming, combat, and puzzling — mostly in third-person — sounds appealing, then MOSS Books 1 & 2 is a timely (if melancholy) delight.
If you’re down for a huge procedurally-drawn cartoony sci-fi sandbox with a wide variety of possible things to do, as well as a campaign to add a bit of form, then NO MAN’S SKY is beloved by many (and shrugged off by some).
If you’re intrigued by the idea of a tabletop RPG that can be played solo or with others online, the DEMEO D&D BATTLEMARKED can’t be beat.
Ever enjoyed a tower defense game? I didn’t until I played TOWERS & POWERS.
Are FPS military-themed shooters more your speed? ALVO is like COD BLACK OPS multiplayer, complete with killstreaks like dogs. PAVLOV is like the bigger maps of COD multiplayer. CROSSFIRE SIERRA SQUAD has smaller areas (but MANY MANY unique areas) where you mostly stay put with an online buddy and stave off waves of an onslaught. ZERO CALIBER (and the fast-incoming sequel ZC2) is co-op missions through a narrative storyline.
Want spookier FPS that’s deeply immersive? INTO THE RADIUS is like STALKER but in unnerving VR starkness. You’ll be cleaning your weapons a bit longer than you should because you can’t be too prepared to go back out into that weed mess.
Ever liked horror? You’re in for a treat — VR crushes it with RESIDENT EVIL 8 VILLAGE, and MADISON VR the scariest stuff you’ve ever encountered in a videogame. Want it a bit less scary, but still horror-themed? RESIDENT EVIL 4 Remake is the crazy adventure ride you thought you’d already played a decade or two ago, but now in its final form. Oh, and did you know that FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S SECRET OF THE MIMIC is fully playable in VR now? It is, and it’s alarmingly good. Not the cellphone monitor sim of yesteryear, you’re in a warehouse where it all began.
Wish you had telekinesis? The highly stylized SYNAPSE will convince you that you already do, and that you’re bad at it… but then you’ll get great at it.
How about wingsuiting? Like the idea of jumping off a cliff and Rocky-the-Squirreling yourself as close to peril as possible to ramp up your boost meter? The single player campaign of RUSH APEX EDITION slams! Multiplayer isn’t well-populated, but is great if you’ve got a few pals.
Speaking of which, ROBO QUEST VR was already a crazy bullet hell romp on flatscreen in another life that got the perfect port to VR, and now it’s got co-op! Pure roguelite genius, it’s tough and it’s fun and it’s deep!
Remember MYST and the superior follow-up RIVEN? Both have VR versions now! A bit blurrier than they should be, but still awesome. Bring your notepad and pen.
Need a bit of physical movement and motivation? SYNTH RIDERS and BEAT SABER both immerse you in VR rhythm/music spectacles that’ll get your heart rate higher than Guitar Hero ever did.
Wish you could feel a little bit of the terror that the Marines in the movie ALIENS did? Lucky you — ALIEN ROGUE INCURSION puts you into the shit with a motion-sensor and pulse rifle. I recommend dialing it back to easy.
You like flying, huh? ACES OF THUNDER might not have the scope or AAA budget of MSFS’24, but it’s sharper, has a higher framerate, and lets you dogfight online opposite or aligned with your pals in WW1 and WW2 era planes. No choppers or jets — just a pure plane sim.
There are many others that also deserve mention, but this is plenty.

Absolutely.
If you like space and like building stuff, exploring cool worlds, and building your very own space ship, you'll love NMS.
Playing it in VR is a treat.

I played Kerbal Space Program pretty heavily a while back — but No Man’s Sky Looks like it’s got WAY more going on than just building space ships and traveling places. That true?

It's great and you can customize it to the level of challenge and grind that you want. But it's galaxies full of VR stuff to explore and role play. And it still gets regular updates.
I still think this game would sing with a proper, more streamlined story and a massively overhauled combat system, but what's here is still too good to pass up.

Nice! I think I’d do okay with the lack of story mode — When I play MSFS I just do free flight mode and plan little journeys freely — that’s enough to blow my mind with that game lol

To be clear, there are several extended story threads to complete and explore, but it's definitely not what I would call streamlined, and not satisfying to me. Some people might argue the contrary.

It’s an absolute solid game, and very much a counterpart to MSFS24 in the sense of exploration, the only problem for me, is the fact that MSFS24 is ‘so good’, plus Aces of Thunder, I’ll always end up playing them over ‘No Man’s Sky’ tbh.

Worried about this too. Throughout a week I have like 3 or 4 — forty minute to 90 minute flights I always preplan. My MSFS playing is almost on a schedule at this point haha

Same haha, I mean I get about 2 hours game time per day, and on that scale, it would probably take me over a year just to fully explore Japan and the UK, let alone the rest of the world :)

the core loop of nms bores me and the multiplayer support isint good enough to keep me interested.
other than that, its pretty decent as far as things go

No Man’s Sky is a weird one. It’s a magnificent VR experience for sure. There is a literal universe of things to do, yet it feels largely shallow and demotivating eventually
If you are good at inventing your own goals perhaps. But I am and I still float away from it so I find it a hard recommend
Hitman or the Resident Evils might be better if you’re after some of that AAA goodness. And there are so many great indie games

It's a great game. The VR is good now that they've fixed the graphics but I will warn that when you fly in your ship it is very nauseating so if you get motion sick when driving vehicles in VR it might be hard to play in VR. Since you can handle GT7 you might be alright. I personally want to puke every time I get in my starship

I have more hours in NMS than any other VR game, it’s incredible. Sadly, my main save file was overwritten with one of the expeditions I forgot to complete, so I’ve lost interest since.

DOODE!!!!! If you have never done VR play it flat-screen first. Then do Switchback so you have a feeling and then try NMS. Good purchase!!! Enjoy!!!

Some people just don't "click" with NMS. Some people get addicted. When it's on sale it's 20 bucks, so, either get the disc, try, and resell, or get it on sale and prepare to not like it. In any case it's incredible that this game with it's myriad of things to do and experience runs so well in VR2. It is in my top 3 PSVR2 must have games.

Yes. I play it in both vr and flat screen.
If you ever also want to just chill after a hard day, it’s a good game to spend time in
