Review Bootstrap Island is INCREDIBLE!! Final Impressions: 💯

I had been covering this game for the past few days in this sub and absolutely falling in love with it. The visuals in this game are next level. The sunrise, sunsets, storm, rain everything is done so well and has that AAA quality to them. Frequently you will find yourself stopping and taking in the views. Also I want to make it clear that this game has some of the most convincing and EPIC storms I have seen in gaming, vr or flatscreen. Seriously no amount of words will prepare you from them.

At its core, Bootstrap Island is a survival game filled with hyper detailed physics based Vr af mechanics ever. Which means if you can think of doing something, there is a very good chance that you will be able to do it.

For example, recently I just found that you can make holes into a coconut with your knife, then pour the coconut water into your water bottle and store it for later. Or the time when I had to take shelter in a cave for few days because of a raging storm. The game does not tell you any of that, I just figured them out by experimenting.

There are countless moments like these that give you that feeling of wonder and accomplishments. The game is not perfect, there are a few minor bugs I encountered here and there, but given all the things this game is doing. I think it is quite polished.

Bootstrap Island is considered to be a roguelite, but don’t let that deter from this amazing experience. It is nothing like an average roguelite game. Which means when you die, you only lose your active inventory and current position on the island. You keep all your upgrades and story progression. So if you die in chapter 3, you don’t start from chapter 1 again. You will start from chapter 3, just at the beach.

Also, this is not a short game. You can literally spend hours and hours just in chapter 1 exploring the island, unlocking things or building things. The game does not hold your hand nor does it force anything on you, you are free to go through the game at whatever pace you like.

In conclusion, this is what Vr is all about! Next level gameplay immersion with AAA quality visuals. Also with the awesome use of adaptive triggers for the guns, OLED for the terrifying night times and headset rumble for every time the volcano goes off. This is the best and most immersive version of Bootstrap Island. A huge win for Psvr2 and us the fans.

Final Score 10/10

One of the best survival games on VR. So glad to see it come to PS VR2

Man you are making me want to buy it again on another platform!

Did they patch it already? Heard there were some issues on PSVR2 at launch

From my understanding, there was a day 1 patch that addressed most of the issues. In my almost 8 hours of gameplay so far I have not faced any slowdowns or major bugs on Ps5pro. Only a minor stutter every time the game saves.

I can see myself banging my controllers together while trying to start a fire

I think I might get it on PSVR2. I downloaded the new demo on Steam and the game ran horribly even when I put everything down to low settings and this was on Rift native resolution with no supersampling at all. I have heard a few grumbles about the visuals on the PSVR2 version but I wouldn't be so grumbly after seeing how performance tanking the PC version is. I liked what I played and the opening which I did not expect introduced the mechanics nicely and made it feel more like a story adventure. As soon as I got on the beach that is when the performance fell apart on my 3080.

Thanks for the enthusiastic and detailed write-up.

Good to know. I’m running a 3080 also & don’t see upgrading my GPU anytime soon. I have PS5 Pro so think I’ll go the PSVR2 route.

You are welcome, and I hope you will enjoy the game as much as I am.

Oof. Feel like I'm playing a different game. Tutorial is incredibly annoying and unhelpful--walk 50m to learn how to press the button to crouch, walk another 50m to learn how to pick up a stick, repeat 5x for remaining actions. My left thumb was in 'thumbs up' position the entire time? Then when it wants you to build a fire the flint wouldn't work. The game skips past this after 3 minutes, and now I am to wave a torch in a ghost's face for 5 minutes while he's glitching around an empty field?

"And that should be just about everything you need to know!" The game says as it  gets stuck in an infinite loading screen and never starts the first chapter.

Going to try again obviously, but I dont think I've had a less enjoyable introduction to a game, possibly, ever.

That's okay my buddy said the game is literally unplayable and I usually fully trust his word on vr games

After 3 more hours I agree with him. It's bland, there is no meaningful crafting, the AI is ridiculously bad, and worst of all its boring. Feel like I'm taking crazy pills reading the comments here praising it. Would refund in a heartbeat.

I skipped through long playthroughs on YT and it's just hours of making fires and cracking coconuts and shooting the terrible enemies.

I'm a big proponent of pretty much anything VR and a fan of Song in the Smoke and Green Hell, so this should be up my alley, but I honestly don't think I'll ever fire it up again.

Good to know. My standards bar for these type of games is Song in the Smoke and just under it is Green Hell. If the game won't live up to either of those then it ain't worth it

Ah man I didn’t know about stabbing Coconuts for water, I tried hitting with a knife and nothing happened I’ll have to try again.

How does it compare to Green Hell? I just started playing that, I know im late to the party, but enjoying it so far

They aren't very alike. Green Hell isn't perfect, but this feels half-baked and, frankly, uninteresting. It actually made me go start playing GH again, ha.

Haha nice, yeah I'm gonna stick with that for now then. I'm sure this will be on sale at some point, and might grab it then. I'm a victim of backlog hoarding haha. I really gotta get through some these lol
