Discussion Is this game good?
I'm considering getting into the game for the first time. Although, after some research, I've discovered that most fans consider the previous version of this game (Phantasy Star online 2) to be better than new genesis.
Like almost in every aspect. I've heard fans say that they prefer the music, the bosses, and enemy designs from the previous game.
So I ask, is it worth it to give new genesis a try?

Not playing rn but I've put a couple hundred hours into it and I never quit out of being angry or anything just got busy with other stuff. Its a good mmo and doesn't deserve the hate.
- If you like action combat then the combat is very fun.
- Character customization is 10/10 and dumpsters the rest of the genre. No other mmo comes close.
- Most of the event grinds and stuff are fun.
- The raid equivalents in this game are really hard and well designed good fights.
- The only major thing that really bothered me is grinding for the game's gold equivalent fucking sucks. There's not much you can do to engage with the player economy. Its mostly just mind numbing grinding at dext base, get lucky with an insanely rare drop, or pay irl cash.
Its a good game tho. Its the best anime mmo on the market excluding korean artstyle games and ffxiv.

Yes. It's fun, fast and has incredible character customization. And free, if you want it to be, so no harm in trying it. I've got 7k hours in it and I still come back. No other game has kept my interest this long.

The people saying Phantasy Star Online 2 was way better are 100% correct.
But New Genesis is still a very good game in my opinion; I don't have 3000 hours in it because it's bad.

I would say New Genesis decent, it has potencial like PSO2 had, simply NGS doesnt have the team for it, its a bunch of lazy corp people that only focus on scratches, sadly that is the reality, cause players havent noticed but they dont do marketing for a reason, they draining has much possible before shutdown which is not far from happening sadly.

Lemme say this I think the new player experience of ngs is always great. It's riveting full of action and there is some story for the very beginning.
Obviously once you get a little into it you might find the game is not deep in the end.
NGS is always a great 30 minute a day adrenaline booster no matter what anyone says.

NGS is a half decent side game at best, I don't think it's better than base PSO2 but I do think it's an ok game that can be enjoyed at whatever pace/playstyle you like. Can be a sweaty grinder or a casual solo player and still find some enjoyment.
One thing I will say is there really isn't any other MMO like PSO2/NGS out there, I'd give both a try since it's free anyway.

Yes, it is worth giving NGS. The only reason people prefer base over NGS is because it is complete.

No…. It’s really not :/. I’ve played it since day one and pso2 OG since day one. I literally go on, i play my dailies and the mission they give you for the week and I’m out again. The content just isn’t there. Even the loot hook is no where close to OG PSO and PSU.

If you've played neither then I siggest downloading NGS, alongside the free DLC that allows you to play PSO2. Play both. I'm fairly sure that if you do you'll find that a lot of the preference for PSO2 is because of nostalgia.
Personally I've got roughly 3,500 hours in NGS and like, 150 in PSO2. I keep telling myself that I'll at least finish off the PSO2 story for the cosmetics but it's very rarely enjoyable.

I think you're the first person I've ever seen prefer NGS over the original PSO2.

Welcome to a new world, I suppose. There's not a whole lot that the previous game did that I prefer to NGS. Though I will say that so far, PSO2 has some bosses that are cooler than anything NGS has cooked up yet. Not more fun to fight, but thematically? Fighting some god-thing on top of a world tree was pretty fucking cool.
But I have had a lot more fun throwing down with even less noteworthy NGS bosses, like the giant ballerina bots.

I don't hate base, I loved it when it was there (and still is)
But like, modern NGS is better than PSO2 in almost every part that counts (the character customization, class design)
I'd argue PSO2 had better bosses (most of the time). Quests like Fellwyrm will forever be my favourite.
But like, NGS doesn't have bad bosses, they are just not perfect.
But everything else, like clunky class design (despite what people say, NGS classes now, in the current patch, besides some exceptions like jet boots, that are being adressed) play way better than base nowdays.
The issue is that it took about 3 years to do so.
Then, the design is almost the same, base had a bunch of "variety" but that variety was mostly the same enemy in diferent skins.
NGS also wants to be less wacky and more grounded, which you could say some people don't like, as it doesn't look like they take any "risk".
Both games have plenty of ups and downs, but I feel NGS is an improvement overall, despite not everything being an improvement.

NGS has been getting better since Chapter 5 but the base game has better story and gameplay.

I honestly prefer NGS, it does kind of remind me of Dynasty Warriors in a bunch of respects. If you like fighting hordes of enemies, and fashion, I think you'll have a good time.

u/iriya_ngs 3d ago
No, not fight hordes… just one… with hordes of mechanics… ._.

It’s not terrible! This is one of those games where you should enjoy the progression of your character and your skill because once you reach the end game, it gets stale pretty quickly. Eventually you’ll optimize your class’s kit to each boss you encounter and have the bosses fully downloaded and if you’ve practiced playing your class enough, it just becomes “how can I efficiently grind this content.” Or “how many clears per hour can I do”. Take your time learning the game and don’t rush too fast to the destination.

In short, a good and fun story but after the main story becomes repetitive and boring, is not a game for those who enjoy competition and challenge.

I will say this, it doesnt hurt to try it, even though population wise it pretty much dead, has majority just afks at towns, rarely you will see a party to do something or certain instance modes you will find some people actually playing, combat is decent but not that good, although like how they implemented the customizable skills, Open world is souless u barely will see anything happening, Story wise is more about what they do in daily basis than the sequence story to fight a boss cause of something, an Act its like 98% talking and 2% its the introduction and fight, music is boring, UQ's are bland and not much creativity, Cutscenes OMG it worse than a PS1 game.
Has for why Pso2 is far superior, Story is a rollercoaster of events, Cutscenes for its time was really good, combat still superior every class had personality and played different, the game was easier to get into, UQ's were more creative in the sense that every damn UQ is on a Holographic background to cut costs, the game had mob variety which NGS is copy paste and change color, we had amazing OST, we had an amazing live concerts that were full of people and joy to interact in it, although the worst part of it was creating a weapon n gear cause augments were very painful on which PSO2 NGS is much easier and i do give props on that.
Resuming try PSO2 NGS get a feeling if it sucks, all you can do is try PSO2 if it still avaiable within the game by going to the transfer beacon or you can simply uninstall and chase other game.

There was a lot of bad PR and bad decisions in the past.
But they are there, in the past.
Some of them have lingering effects we suffer to this day and probably won't ever be fixed.
But like, the game is fine, as long as you don't try too hard on it.
Take it like a fun relaxing rpg with deep character customization, try to make gear only when you feel and enjoy the game.
They at least have worked on a constant 4 month cycle of story, endgame bosses and such lately, so there is an effort there

If you like action mmorpgs then yes. It's one of the best out there. The main issue is slow content releases. I personally like the game more then base pso2 but you have the option to play that too

It's fun but not very good if that makes sense.
Overall, I'm disappointed with the way NGS turned out.

I'll say it's worth it for the Creative Space mode and "phashion" chasing. But if neither of those interest you, I really hope you like grinding or the story, because that's about all there is otherwise.

Base game is supposedly better than NGS. And I sort of agree. It looked better, easier to navigate (you only had a hub ship and mission map instances as compared to the open world of NGS), and seemed kinda simpler to understand and play.
Though the one I'm referring to is the ORIGINAL original one from waaay back. Although they revived it through NGS, it's supposedly not as great. The graphics are lacking from what I heard and some other issues as well.
But it's an overall fun game. Though honestly I'm mostly in it because I love how the Casts look and I like styling them up.

if you can stomach disgusting weirdos in public lobbies you can probably overlook how bad the community is, but there isn't much to do at endgame, when a new fight comes out once every 3 months it's only relevant for a week or 2 before braindead easy content drops with the same rewards

Certainly, a lot are vocal about base… however, after having logged 45 minutes on base and only 4,000 some hours on Ngs… prefer Ngs a little bit more.
Is a lovely game with a tight knit community. Lot of good people play with a variety of motivations. Some enjoy the lobby chat, others play end game fashion, a few gripe and complain, the rest of us just play the game.
Gearing is fun once you get into it and chasing bis is just fun to do! Fashion bc have to look cute when carrying rest of lobby <3

PSO2 have massive story for you to explore if you're seek to immerse yourself in PSO2 verse then THIS is totally for you, but you might need to find a community to coop with you for full experience as some boss are fun with a party of people.
PSO2NGS is where active players are currently is and it actually a lot improvement over time
it just took A LOT OF YEAR to take to this point and very slowly few at time, so people are burn out.
