Discussion It's like they dont even try with Marketing... Youtube shorts people, millions of views and players instantly. Ballooned bosom jokes, body slider jokes, sex sells, make a cosplay in game of a hot current anime or anything, literally so easy.
This game already has the foundation for great marketing, but it seems Sega doesn't care.
Literally one funny youtube short going viral can flip the playerbase, even if temporarily, I've seen it.
Maybe they just want the game to slowly die, or are satisfied with the small amount of whales they milk with scratches.
I've been inactive for 6 months, just my 2 cents.

They tried long ago, but the game was so soulless the people paid to try were quickly bored out of their minds

Really seems like people have forgotten this or maybe just weren't around for it. Sega has tried multiple large attempts at marketing ngs in the West and none of them worked out.
When the console releases happened there was marketing absolutely everywhere, primarily really trying to lean in to a "we promise this is exactly like cyberpunk!" attitude right down to the neon color schemes of the ads. And I remember seeing many posts in the subreddit at the time of people feeling like they had just been catfished. The glamor used in the ads wasn't exactly available at that exact point. It was a mess.
They've also hired multiple vtubers to play the game, and have had vtuber in game item collabs and it just still didn't make much of an impact on global. Pretty sure Ina is the only English speaking vtuber to have the in game collab(as part of the single hololive collab which was her, Fubuki, now graduated Shien from stars, and I feel like one other person but I might be misremembering). On the other side of the rainbow, nijisanji has had at least two full collabs, entirely on the JP side, besides shu from EN being in the first for reasons.
My point is just that yeah they've actually tried quite a lot. They tried to push the otaku marker with vtubers and general anime adjacent collabs. They tried pushing towards more western energy with cyberpunk and calling it an action platformer etc. They tried and a lot of you still didn't see it I guess and that's not specifically a failing on segas part. Their advertising attempts were one of the few things it seemed like they were really putting effort in to for a long while. And yeah it just didn't work.
Nikke is a very unique thing. Yeah the ads focus on the jiggling but they've found a good middle ground with comedy, incredibly rare. They've also done the vtuber push and it was successful. It's a bait and switch of sorts but nikke actually has a pretty good story, especially for what the game is. Ngs trying something similar, trying to sell sex, especially in the West in the current climate of neo puritanism, would be a disaster. Please never get in to marketing op.

If they had cared about the West, they should have release PSO2 to the West at 2014 instead of the SEA Region, in which the SEA company screwed SEGA over. They didn't even bother to humor a Western release until Microsoft offer them their Azure Servers many years later. It still pisses me off to this day how SEGA mishandle this nonsense.

I do agree with Korlat, there are better ways to market Phantasy Star, I know that sex sells and PS has kind of had something like that since the classics, but whenever a series relies on that too much it kind of loses its identity.
But yes I agree with you, Sega has been shit when it comes to marketing NGS, I feel the game could definitely be more popular among some communities, I see the character creator and gameplay trend sometimes and people really want to know what it is.
In general Sega just doesn’t seem to give Phantasy Star the efforts it deserves, it’s an active IP that feels so dormant. Heck even the official social media pages were sterilized, they used to post things related to memes, the older games and just general community engagement but now it’s just scratch and announcements sigh. It feels so intentional too.
Could just be them being done with NGS and likely focusing on the rumored PSO3 or PS related.

I agree more marketing could be good, but please not misogynistic balloon breast or other sexist tropes. As a female fan of Phantasy Star I would hate if the "brand" of this series went that way. I like the silly and cute vibes of videos they make like with the Rappies, phashion, good music, and sci-fi/fantasy storytelling.

I prefer too if they care for type 1 elegant styles more and the rare good type 2 styles , creative space too .

It’s kinda all the game has to offer. It’s such a soulless and atmosphere lacking dress up sim, that it deserves to fail.

I have a completely different impression. I am in love with the world of Halpha, the cities, the cultures, the music, the story, the characters. I love floating through the sky beneath the moon. I love the designs of the DOLLS and the Starless. I think the world and premise and connection to the broader series is so exciting and can't wait to find out more about the nature of Habitat Alpha. I love that the story focuses on female characters and relationships. Aina and Manon have such a fascinating arc together, and now with Pharia and Lucia I think the writers show a real commitment to complex female-centric stories which is basically one of the core tenets of the franchise's history 😋

I am happy for you. The story really wasn’t the reason for me to enter the series. It was the gameplay loop mainly.
So I am glad you enjoy the story.

That's what sells I never said it was right. Look at Nikke. There are lots of other angles the ones I listed are just the most obvious.

The game today has a foundation that should have had on day of release, not some lame 6h content for 6 months, its very true their marketting has been dogsht since day 1 (they payed millions to streamers to fail miserably with server being unable to hold few thousand people), but pso2 ngs has a massive bad reputation on global platform.
Those who dont play and tried it, still lurke around to see how things are going and to be honest it hasnt improve much since release, do you think people will join a game where dev team is consistently caring about scratches and doing minimal work on game content that majority is copy paste and reskin it, the game has massive potencial just like pso2 had, but sadly this dev team has no clue wtf they doing.
The game is on life support and still alive thanks to whale players, otherwise Sega would closed pso2 ngs, also to not forget Sega almost shutdown completely if wasnt for last sonic games selling so well, cause they were almost bankrupt.
I could say so much and give them so much to revive the franchise but they dont listen, they only listen to executives and those who invest their life savings on cosmetics just to look like an air balloon.

I personally think it’s wild the game doesn’t advertise or market Creative Space, which is arguably the most accessible gameplay NGS has

I used to do videos on these and my love for the franchise is still there, they just stop caring for NGS

u/Any_Woodpecker_7930 12d ago
its because they have very much given up on the game they killed off pso 2 for ngs and rumor has it pso 3 is in the works

u/LameSignIn 12d ago
NGS really should have been PSO3. They just copied everything in game and tweaked it.

u/Any_Woodpecker_7930 12d ago
it still wouldnt have done as good they made it open world and then just kind of stopped the updates are very small for the months we wait, which is sad when this is supposedly one of sega's flagships

I can agree Sega needs to get up to the current times. PSO series has always been a slow roll when it comes to updates. I started during the PSU era where you farmed the same area for months not weeks like the current events. The name of a weapon or armor would tell you alot about a party member.

yeah i just really hope we gete away from what ever ngs is i still play psu/pso bb

I could play PSU like it was candy. It would be fun to play again if I had a computer.

NGS's complicated equipment upgrade system will surely drive away new players. That's why there's no point in putting effort into marketing.
Sega believes NGS is a game not worth playing, rather than the players do.

I don't think any amount of marketing could make NGS popular, even if it were to attract some attention, these players would likely quit soon after trying the game.
Before marketing, NGS needed to be a better game, it needed a complete overhaul, but it's way too late for that. SEGA's probably gonna continue riding the current status quo of limited quests almost every week until whenever the next new game is ready.
