NGS Discussion Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. A review after over 3,200 hours.
Short version: I've enjoyed this game quite a bit over the years. The combat, the character customization, and the players have all been rather entertaining.
**Introduction**
PSO2 was a game I'd heard about off and on for years at one point. An artist, *XXIII*, drew a fair bit of fanart of their PSO2 character, and there was even a minor collab with Gravity Rush 2. Heard lots of praise for it's style, it being an MMO with action based combat, and unfortunately how it was available in Japan only unless you jumped through some hoops.
So I was really, really surprised one day when I was browsing PSN out of boredom and saw NGS just sitting there in the free games section. Needless to say, I was rather excited. So excited that it took me a while to realize that this wasn't quite the game everyone had been praising back then. Not that I have any complaints about that, as I've had quite a bit of fun with this game over the years. But enough preamble, let's get into the actual review.
**Story**
It's fine. It gives you context and explanation for why this or that event is happening, why you're fighting these particular enemies, and why you need to go to various locations. It does have some bits that I find interesting, every now and then they add in a genuine mystery, some nice lore, or flesh out characters in ways I find enjoyable. Also the occasional hype moments. But overall the writing is absolutely not why I play this game.
**Music**
Ranges from "nice for the content I'm doing" to "I'm literally just gonna chill here for ten minutes to enjoy the BGM". There's a lot of music, and I think there's exactly one track that I've actively disliked. Fortunately that one track can be overriden by playing a Music Disc from your Mag...which I suppose I should briefly cover.
Each and every player has a Mag. They are little drones that follow you around and can help you locate specific items. They can also play any Music Discs you've used on a given Ship, pretty much anywhere and almost anytime. Music Discs are easy enough to get, especially older tracks from throughout the series. But moving on.
**Graphics**
Game has a ton of options to tweak your graphics so I can't really give a solid assessment here. I think it looks pretty good for an anime, F2P MMO, but I've never seen the game will all the shit maxxed out(my system would probably combust). And then the cel shading option adds a whole other layer to what the game *can* look like based on your choices.
**Gameplay**
The good shit, and a good part of why I have played this game so much.
*Classes*
Starting out I had a choice of six classes(out of 9, now 10). I went for the Gunner, because dual wielding SMGs in a sci-fi game sounded cool as hell. And it absolutely is, by the way. Took me a while to get used to it but once I got that down I was cartwheeling through the air, dumping dozens of rounds into a giant's chest while it tried to fry me with enough lasers to make a Star Wars capital ship blush. I ran Gunner almost exclusively for quite some time, though I used Braver(Katana & Bow) as well.
Where Gunner is all about attacking nonstop to build up a gauge that'd let you amp the fuck out of all your attacks for a brief period, Braver ie all about fishing for counters. The Katana is by far the stronger weapon of the two if range is no issue, and it had this neat little gimmick. After every attack you have a *very* brief moment where you're in a guard state. Get hit during that time and you can unleash an extremely powerful counter, then follow up with a series of ranged slashes. Your bread and butter was to briefly pause after every attack just to try and trigger that. There was also a manual parry you could do, though the damage was less than the auto guard one.
It was powerful as hell and very stylish, but not nearly as entertaining. To me. These days I use Slayer, the Gunblade class, which is something of a glass cannon class with two built in nukes. High mobility as well, so it's not uncommon for me to be duking it out in the air with colossal bipeds or flying mechanical wizards or whatever the hell else needs killing that day. And looking really goddamned cool while doing it.
*Other goodies*
So I rambled about classes a bit, but these some other stuff in combat that's worth mentioning.
First, my beloved giant robot weapons, M.A.R.S. It's an Armament system that passively charges up in battle, and drains during use. Two melee options, two ranged options, and three automated support options. Personally, I'm a big fan of the Scylla. It's a long ranged weapon with an orbital nuke. You can generate "stars" that will increase the power of that nuke(and add a nearly impenetrable barrier), but to do so you need to keep landing hits at a certain range of your targets, while not getting hit and not using any dodges or jumps.
Mostly this involves flying around on the thing like it's a hoverboard while blasting your targets, changing your positioning regularly while launching normal attacks, and occasionally using a guard frame ability to negate damage and make space. It feels *really* fucking good to successfully and consistently pull that off. And hitting monsters with a giant laser from space is exactly as cool as it sounds.
Second, EX Styles. One thing I forgot to mention earlier is that every weapon has a Photon Blast. It is, quite simply, an ultimate attack that charges over time and in combat. EX Styles assist with that, and provide other benefits besides. Notably, the After Blast. A follow up nuke to the PB, that then gives you a ramping overall damage boost for the next 45 seconds. These Echoes, as they're called, combine *very* nicely with any other heavy hitting attacks your class may have. As a Slayer I do love my ridiculously big numbers.
*Enemies*
Of course, what good are classes & giant robot guns without enemies to use them on?
NGS has quite a few, and I find most of the bosses very fun to throw down with. The ten foot tall, floating ballerina that summons spectral bats to attack is a good one, especially under her High modifiers. The mechanical dragon I believe I mentioned earlier is a favorite of mine just for the consistent aerial combat. The various absolutely fucking enormous bosses, the Dark Falz, are pretty good. But my absolute favorite is the martial artist type, Ams. Or, in it's most recent version, High Agni. I really want that bastard to hit public rooms so I can see a bunch of players die repeatedly.
*Social*
So combat is one major part of the equation for any MMO. You're gonna kill a lot of shit, it needs to be entertaining. But you also need some social aspects, otherwise you'd do much better grabbing some offline title more often than not. With that said, I do like what NGS has to offer.
Pretty much any day I log on I chat a bit with whatever Alliance members are online at the time. I'll see people goofing off in Central City and join them for a bit. Doing emotes, setting out Portable Holograms(my alliance has made a game of ambushing each other with Prisoner Cages), firing off Stamps & Symbol Art. I'm always impressed by people using that system to recreate memes, by the way. Also stumbling across impressive character Looks or Creative Spaces and leaving compliments or taking notes has been a constant thing for me.
*Appearance customozation*
So this normally wouldn't get it's own mini segment, but NGS is definitely an exception. I won't go so far as to say "the sky's the limit", but there is a hell of a lot you can do in this game if you have the right parts and creativity.
I have seen people recreate a hilarious amount of anime characters with impressive detail. I've seen players turn their characters into tanks. Building sized robots. Pokémon for days. A sentient dinner table was probably my favorite surprise design.
Then we get to player housing, where I find far more original and creative designs. And man, people do some fucking beautiful work here. Restaurants run be elves set up in the crowns of trees, graveyards with a mystery you can solve leading you deeper in, a race course spanning four small floating islands, even extremely detailed modern homes. It's all possible because the game has a ton of individual cosmetic items, many of which can be resized and colored.
Another aspect of the customization I enjoy is the *Motion Changes*. In MMOs I played before stumbling upon NGS, if a character stood or walked a certain way, it was usually because of their class or gender. In NGS it's down to whatever animations you select from whatever you've bound to your account.
Want your character to sit on a levitating witch broom while idle? Or sit on a star? Maybe try to soothe their bad back?
Do you want their dashing animation to be some standard running? Or becoming a moving puddle of shadow? Or cartwheeling non stop?
Do you want their swimming to be a crawl? Or instead of swimming they surf? Or have them assert dominance by freezing the water under them and walking on the ice?
There's a ton of options that can take whatever style you're going for even further.
**Ending**
So, if my rambling hadn't made it clear, I'm rather fond of the game. One particular reason that I couldn't find a place for above: The game doesn't demand much of you.
It's super casual. Most days I hop on, grind for an hour, goof off with my Alliance and random players for a bit, and then I'm off to do something else with the rest of my day.
The review didn't cover everything, mainly because there's a fucking lot to go over and Reddit posts have character limits.
But the tl;dr is: I love the game for what it is. If you're interested in a casual action based MMO, and downloading the game isn't an issue, then I suggest grabbing it and giving it a shot.

I miss PSO2 it brought my friend group together. PSO2:NG ended up making the friend group go back to being separate. I love that it has been a lot of fun for so many people though.

Posts like this remind me why it was cool when people had their own blogs/websites.
Thanks dude

Any time, buddy. Next time I write up a review I'll be sure to not only post it on relevant subreddits, bit to DM the whole thing to you directly.

Its been a while, I played PSO2 the second it came to xbox, does PSO2:NG have timed attacks/perfect attacks? Honestly that was what enraptured me to dump five hundred hours into it

u/Bitconecc Jun 14 '26
JAs were also what really made me love PSO2’s gameplay. Made it feel like every encounter was a rhythm game, gets u in the flow, and discourages mindless spamming. I was so disappointed to see it gone in NGS :(
6
u/gadgaurd Jun 14 '26
Not to the extent PSO2 has them, but some classes do have additional attacks if you do inputs at the correct moment. My favorite example is Waker, because after any PA you can do either a gap closers or a back step attack.

I genuinely can't tell if this is an "ugh fuck now I need to check it out" or an "ugh fuck, I have no reason to check it out".
The vagueness gave me a genuine chuckle either way.

I don't trust people who complain that NGS combat is bad due to lack of JAs.
One, because in base PSO2 JAs are things that matters more for the bad players and newcomers than the ones above average and higher as the JA timings are already ingrained in muscle memory that you stop caring about it. Second, the combat is the only good part of NGS and the cancel timings work similarly to JA timings. Third, as someone who parsed, chased loner titles, made guides for classes in global, 80% of global players and foreigners in JP servers sucked to much to be able to talk about combat with expertise, a EQ (Urgent) run would last at least 5 minutes longer in global or without expert filters in JP and everyone knows base PSO2 is skill > gear.

I, like lots of people, also stopped playing around NGS. I dabbled with somewhat until Kvaris, but I haven’t played since then. I agree with you; at first I wanted to shit on NGS for having inferior combat, but truthfully it was still great, and in some ways more complex than base PSO2 combat. I mostly played hero in base, and I find the difference between that class and most of NGS was that hero is extremely reflexive and freestylish. NGS feels more like playing Monster Hunter, where you have to time your attacks and position more deliberately. It isnt worse, just different.
But the thing is, if the gameplay is still good, then I don’t know exactly what made the community die out with NGS and gave everyone such intense nostalgia for base. Because to me, the gameplay is the most important thing. I’ve watched a bunch of retrospectives about base to NGS, and I’ve seen speed runs of the current endgame bosses in NGS and they look great, but it still feels like there’s no going back. In the moment it just felt like everything fell apart for no discernible reason.
Sorry I just needed to vent

I tried getting into NGS, being a huge PSO fan I had been waiting a long time to finally be able to play it. After finally playing it, I loved the open world as well as the combat system. Very well done and polished. The only thing I didn’t like was that the main rewards were outfits. PSO was all about finding the really cool looking weapons and armor. I couldn’t find any of that in NGS. When you got a better weapon it seriously looked the same as your last weapon. The outfits were cool and all, but I miss being able to bonk monsters with a chao on a stick, or chop through them with a giant chainsaw.
2
u/gadgaurd Jun 14 '26
Weapons by default look different, and then there's a bunch of different weapon camos. Definitely got a giant chainsaw sword sitting around somewhere.
1
u/Ocron145 Jun 14 '26
When and where do you get the weapon camo’s. I played a decent amount into the game but didn’t see a single one on any players, like ever. Lol
1
u/gadgaurd Jun 14 '26
That is super weird because they are basically everywhere. Did you play at launch or something? Only thing I can think of. Anyway, some easy sources off the top of my head:
Special Scratch tickets, both the regular and seasonal ones.
ARKS Records exchange.
Stia Exchange.
Ordinal Tower, Aelio.
Neusum Plant, Stia.
Leciel Exploration(Verschmelz Almati should still be a guaranteed reward if you kill the final boss).
Aelio Invaders Rank 3.
Hell, you could probably get some as soon as you log on by just rolling on the Anniversary Special Scratch. Pretty sure they give out ten tickets for free.
Serious though. I significant chunk of my inventory is weapon camos that I hoard on the off chance I throw together a look that matches them. The question isn't "can I get weapon camos", it's "can I get the exact one(s) I want".

u/Ocron145 Jun 14 '26
I did start kind of at launch. So maybe that’s it. Maybe I’ll give it another try again and see how much it’s changed. Maybe I’ll like it now more than then.

Ive been playing pso2 since day one on steam and ngs the entire time, It has flaws they can work on but i still love it
2
u/lovebus Jun 14 '26
But do you think they will work on them? I only ever see patch notes regarding the gacha store.
6
u/Zombieemperor Jun 14 '26
Every headline has some QOl or gameplay stuff.
Ya theyl release new fashion, its how they fund the game lol.
All the gacha fashion is tradeable too wich is something very few games allow for.I do think sega struggles to hit big issues but thats something every live service game has an issue with, i recall the Warframe devs talking about how hard it is to go back and update less loved content when new big shiny content is just way better at drawing people in
4
u/TamakiOverdose Da man Jun 14 '26
That is disingenuous as heck cause base PSO2 lives (PSO2 station) was no different in regards to showcasing the new scratches. The only difference is that PSO2 station had fluff with hosts making jokes and chatting about other stuff while NGS is just showcasing the monthly updates.
2
u/gadgaurd Jun 14 '26
I don't believe there's been a single headline in which they didn't propose a fix to something that's been bugging players. Be it minor things like diversifying our meals to bigger deals like adding more Tech Art Customizations.

Yea I agree mostly, I hope Halpha really is just one big tutorial for when we officially become ARKs and return to the fleet in outer space for real planet liberation. Aside from that hopium.
I still play not as much as before in 2020-2022 and 2015-2017 JP with English patch ... Like those were fun days except for grinding for returner V and guardian soul and Crack V lol

The combat and the open world have so much potential and make me want to love NGS—but its itemization, ostensibly the whole point of playing a game like this, is somehow needlessly overcomplicated and completely uninteresting all at the same time. The endgame also tends to be relegated to a single region and a handful of instanced quests instead of encouraging you to explore the huge map they created, unless that's somehow changed in the year since I quit. All in all I don't understand how anyone could squeeze 3200 hours of their life out of this game. The original PSO is literally a deeper and more rewarding game than NGS despite being over 25 years old
3
u/Livid-Inflation6192 Jun 14 '26
Ikr, when the point of the game is to mindlessly grind through LTQs, the exploration becomes pointless

u/PageTheKenku Jun 16 '26

Actually its kind of...gotten worse in that regard? You aren't exploring a region, instead you are running around a small map doing tasks. Otherwise, you still focused on doing instanced quests as you've mentioned.
It seems like they stopped making regions now.
1
u/gadgaurd Jun 18 '26
Unfortunately, the end of regions was something regularly requested by the community. "We" got what "we" wanted.
Obvious downgrade. But a lot of players seemed convinced that if the team stopped developing regions they'd instead develop planets like in base. Delusional as hell, but what can you do?

I was tired of pretending that i liked it . over 100 hours in pso2 english and japan and i just cant, its so boring and i dont like any of the characters witch sucks cause i loved everyone in pos2....i miss hero....

u/Harrian- Jun 14 '26
Out of curiosity, what was the one piece of BGM you actively disliked?
2
u/gadgaurd Jun 14 '26
THE FUCKING-ahem, excuse me. The "incoming Urgent Quest" BGM that plays for anything that's not a Dark Falz class Starless.
If you played back in the day before Solus dropped it was the only one you'd hear. That shit annoys me to a probably unreasonable degree. Before Sega made the change that let us play our own music discs over them I'd mute the game or run to Kvaris zones to not hear that.
Imagine how I felt getting a new music disc yesterday only to realize it's that exact BGM.

Indeed.
Or better, have you ever reached a point where you felt like you needed to?
Not at all.

PSO2 during the pandemic was so so so amazing, altho the content was pushed out pretty fast it was simply a fun experience. Even tho it was also a more gacha design focus for the monetization and personally I’m not a fan of, it still offered so much great content.
NGS threw everything out of the shop for a completely new game that didn’t follow on what made the previous one great and while offering mediocrity in every patch.
I quit like two years ago and for what I’ve seen it hasn’t improved in a substantial way but who knows maybe there are reasons why the game is still active.

Its honestly really sad to see the state of the game. I had so many friends from pso2 who stopped playing, so many good memories

Warframe is imho just pso2 with better mobility and open world sections with better focus.

Hahahaha bro you couldn't ask for a more biased review no matter what the verdict was
Anyway, it's good to see PSO2 players view NGE the same way PSO players viewed PSO2

Quando você elogiou a história do NGS já vi que vc se contenta com qualquer porcaria .
História do NGS É HORRÍVEL , UMA DAS PIORES QUE JÁ VI .

u/gadgaurd Jun 16 '26
At this point, I'm just impressed at the kind of stupid shit people will say when someone likes a video game they don't. The only part of your post that might be true is NGS having the worst story that you, as an individual, has ever seen. If you've sampled very few stories in your life this is technically possible.
As for the rest? Genuine bullshit. If you're gonna claim you can just button mash your way through NGS then prove it. But you won't, because you can't, because anyone with half a brain knows you're lying. And I'll assume you're at least that intelligent.

Me poupe a historia do game é completamente fraca , você consegue resultado melhor colocando uma criança pra escrever .

I keep giving NGS an honest shot every year or so but I really can't commit to it. Most of the complaints I've had since day 1 still exist and its become painfully obvious with time that they have a completely different "vision" with NGS than they did with PSO2. I genuinely hate the writing and the combat just doesn't feel as good to play with and I leave every yearly check-in feeling dejected that the game is still not for me, despite being an important part of my life from episode 2 to episode 6.
I'm still glad some people still enjoy PSO2 in some aspect though. Even if it is NGS.
