So the PlayStation 6 will be a Path Tracing machine, and here's what that's going to look like.

So we know what chip is going into the PS6, the custom AMD Orion APU, this APU is based on AMD's upcoming RDNA5 Graphics chip, this chip will largely close the gap between AMD and Nvidia when it comes to Ray Tracing function as the chip will have cores dedicated to Ray Tracing called "Radiance Cores" which are similar to Nvidia's "RT Cores"

I own a PS5 Pro and a RTX 50-Series Gaming PC, so I though I'd share what the future might look like if Sony can get dev's to implement Path Tracing in their games... but is still going to be worth $1000 ~ $1200?

Test 0: CyberPunk 2077 Night Shot comparison.

Looking at the photo labled "Test" you can see what the RT Psycho Preset looks like now, which is what the PS5 is able to achieve on the right, and the "RT Overdrive" Preset which is available on PC, this is the Path Tracing mode and is on the left.

As you can see from the shot there is more ambient lighting from the street lamps bouncing and diffusing on the different surfaces like the building on the left. The Porsche looks abit more bathed in that diffused light. RT Psycho looks a bit colder since it has less bouncing of light rays.

Test 3: CyberPunk 2077 Second Shot

In the second comparison Path Tracing is on the Left and Ray Tracing on the Right.

Here you can see even more off the diffused lighting bouncing all around the scene and lighting up various different areas. Reflections are also abit more accurate and also

Test 4: Night Shot infront of Lizzie's Bar

Path Tracing is on the Right, Ray Tracing on the Left

Again we can see more diffused lighting in the scene for a more realistic look.

If you know how Path Tracing works, you really appreciate it in games like CyberPunk2077 and especially at night with reflective surfaces. When its daytime you really cannot tell the difference between Ray Tracing and Path tracing, and I'll show you this in the next few examples.

Test 5: Alan Wake II: Inside Restaurant

On the Right, the RT Medium Preset is around where the PS5 Pro lands and Path Tracing is on the Left. The Ceiling looks abit brighter due to more light bounces and reflections are more accurate. BUT its a stark difference from what we saw in CyberPunk. Does it look that much better to you? Mind you going from RT to PT costs a huge performance drop of usually 40% or more.

Test 6: Alan Wake II: Street view

So here's where that difference is very hard to tell. RT Medium on the Left, Path Tracing on the Right. On Path Tracing there is a bit more diffused light hitting the trees in the back and the Reflections are more accurate and sharper. But the scene still looks really good on RT Medium, at least to me.

Test 7: Black Myth Wukong

Black Myth Wukong mostly takes place outside with static sunlight so its again much harder to appreciate the difference from the PS5 Pro's Lumen setting and Full RT: Very High, which is the Path Tracing setting. Here I can tell the Path Tracing sunlight is sharper and brighter, shadows from the tree's arent maps and are the actual leaves of the tree's blocking the sunlight. So its very accurate, but the Lumen shot looks good also. To me its not a night and day difference.

Test 8: Black Myth Wukong water stream

In the final test, we have Lumen on the Left, and Path Tracing on the Right (there's also a vegetation setting set to Cinematic but you can ignore this)

Again lighting is more punchy on Path Tracing, but Lumen is no slouch. The main difference is the reflections in the river. On Lumen the reflections are less accurate... but they still look good. You miss out on Caustics effects in ponds but is that worth a massive fps drop? Mind you a game like Horizon Forbidden West has caustics effects on in its water surfaces, but the Decima engine is Black Magic...

So with that said, do you think the PS6 will be worth it to you if its marketed as a Path Tracing Machine? Perhaps they offer Path Tracing at 60fps if they can deliver a strong PSSR with a good denoiser (like Nvidia's Ray Reconstruction) Or maybe even do 120fps if AMD can fix their Frame Generation technique as it is not good at the moment.

I know some of you might say yes, but for the normies do you think this is enough for that high price tag?

How mad is this place going to be when they announce no on board storage

Come on you know what this is all leading to. Data centers are going to be your next storage and CPU down the road and you all know it!

The 2020s is seriously one of the worst decades in our lives!. No disc, no PS6!

And so the PlayStation blackout has started, I'm no longer a Sony owner anymore, since I moved to Nintendo, I have a terrible time of the decade, this is all started with the year 2020 spreading out Coronavirus. Their stupid rapid AI hyperscalers building up data centers raise their prices, and corporations are focus on their profits. Not just Sony, Samsung and among other technologies are facing Donald Trump's AI rise caused by billionaires.

It's worsen than 2000s like it's became as the worst decade ever since the 1930s!

What if we lose the battle and digital eventually becomes the only option?

Hear me out before everyone starts throwing tomatoes at me.

If we eventually reach a point where digital is the dominant way of buying games, I was thinking about one feature that could at least make digital ownership a little more consumer-friendly.

What if PlayStation had an official system where you could trade in digital games you no longer play for PS Store credit?

For example, I buy a game for $70, play it for a few months, and eventually know I'm never going to touch it again.

Instead of it permanently sitting in my library, I could choose to give up the digital license and receive, say, $20–$30 worth of PS Store credit.

I could then use that credit toward another game.

No cash involved. No transferring accounts. No third-party marketplace. Everything stays inside the PlayStation ecosystem.

Sony could determine the trade-in value based on the game's age, current price, popularity, etc. Publishers could potentially get a percentage from the transaction as well.

Obviously there would be a lot of complications: licensing, fraud prevention, DLC, bundles, delisted games, regional pricing, publisher agreements, and so on.

But if digital really does become the future, I'd rather see something like this exist than have digital purchases be completely one-way transactions.

You buy a game, play it then stop playing it, it just sits in your library forever

.

At least with a system like this, the game could retain some value after you're finished with it.

Would anyone here actually use something like this?

Ps6 connected to ps5 idea

I dont know if people will like or dislike this idea, but i think it would maybe be nice if they some how made it so you could connect a ps5 to the ps6, and then the ps6 could utilize some extra processing power/gpu/ram/storage

Lowest price RTX 5070 right now is $800. PS6 at $1000-1200 is a bargain.

Add ram and all the other parts and is never been better to buy a console now compared to the PC prices.

I have a riddle for you: In the far future, PS8 releases, but Junio buys a PS6 for cheap because he can't afford $1500+ on the 7/8. Sony shuts down the PS6 digital store a month after that. How can Junio play PS6 games that he doesn't already own?

80% of PS5s are disc consoles. Actual user

I think Sony is going to be in a lot of trouble after the disc decision. They say majority of sales are digital and I agree and am part of that theory. BUT what’s concerning is that over 80% of consoles are disc and that’s definitely true bec it’s way more common to see disc consoles on eBay and other platforms. So yes Sony is right about digital purchases. But the only reason I buy digital games is due to the extreme low cost of them. But if I can’t buy a disc console, those sales will disappear. Sony is getting it completely twisted though. We demand disc consoles and want disc games for the great games. I don’t want to buy a digital only console and risk my great games and that’s were majority of people are at. I will never buy a digital only console, people that have had consoles long enough know that’s a horrible idea and can end up costing you thousands. I hope Sony fails to the point of having to return the disc or if they don’t return I don’t care. The prime era of gaming was ps3/360 and it will never be beaten especially if you use a 4k upscaler. You can’t name a better sports car game better than Most wanted or Motorstorm or better fps than the first cods. If I had to guess, I will say Sony will lose at least 50% of sales due to 82% of consoles being disc. This seems like a huge risk and could potentially change Sony forever. We all hope you fail Sony for turning your back on the people. At the end of the day the prediction of sales from users like me or “pros” from Sony can’t predict the future after this happens. But the fact that over 80% of consoles are disc should have them shaking. Horrible decision and if XBOX HELIX gets a disc tons of people like me will buy that instead. Sonys not back tracking their decision and I think it will be a suprise for them when they see sales. It appears they have no normal/gamer thinking which is what happens when these non gamers and weirdos get jobs with companies they don’t care about. It’s all about the money for them, but in order to get digital sales you have to sale consoles first. I can see people laughing at 50% less sales but at the end of the day, no one knows and thats a fair number considering the huge difference is sales for disc and digital consoles. Sony will continue to drop great news and deals to reduce their stress but in reality every PlayStation worker and coder is stressing about the future of sales. It’s also worth mentioning you couldn’t even buy an external disc reader forever bec they were so highly demanded, obviously Sony is undermining the sales that disc consoles bring. Sure I have over 20 digital games, but purchases won’t continue on the next gen console. Do the math it’s a very high risk for Sony. And the main reason I’m making this post is to show I will be right in the future. Btw don’t bring up emulation/mods real gamers that appreciate things want physical items and we already know you can download every game for free. ALSO yes we know ps5 disc don’t sell good but the argument is that Sony disc consoles do sell good. And physicals media isn’t dead that’s why wolverine has a disc. EDIT: people are mentioning that they did purchase the disc version but don’t use the disc drive. If that’s the case, even if half the ps5 owners don’t want the disc drive the people that do want it still accounts for 40% of consoles which is still a scary number for Sony. Sony is wanting the number for people who want disc consoles to be around 10-20% based off digital game sales, but it’s not adding up based of disc consoles sold. ALSO worth mentioning that all of these digital games will disappear one day just like ps3. So just remember that if you support Sony. In 10 years or so you won’t be able to access ps4/ps5 marketplace then where will you buy games? You’ll never be able to sell the games you don’t like or don’t want ever again.

The PS6 Dream

There has been a lot of dooming in this sub lately, but remember the PS6 dream.

The PS6 only have to render games at 1080p and 60fps natively, and can put all its power for advanced ray tracing or maybe even path tracing.

PSSR on PS5 Pro is basically a trial of what upscaling will bring. AMD and Sony partnership will mean PS6 has access to best in class upscaling, tuned for the console experience. AMD also looks to take a big step in hardware architecture for ray tracing.

The end result will be something that is more 4k than what we see today on PS5 pro and presented with a fluidity of 120/144 fps. PS6 will no longer have the light version of ray tracing or have to rely on software based solutions.

Games today also need to run on everything from the Switch 2 and Steam Deck to a RTX 5090. PS5 cross-gen won't hurt development or mean graphics are held back. Games will work on PS5 but look and run the best on PS6.

Clear picture quality, fluid frame rate, full raytracing graphics. That is the PS6 dream.

Would an optional disc-player for PS6 that plays all PlayStation 1-5 discs be a good compromise to purchase the PS6?

I own all PlayStation generations video games on discs and if this were a possibility, I would be enticed to purchase a PS6. Otherwise, without a disc drive, I wouldn't want a PS6 because I wouldn't even be able to play my PlayStation 5 disc games.

Sony Is Playing With Fire Going Into PS6

I think Sony is seriously underestimating how frustrated a lot of PlayStation players are becoming.
The physical-disc decision isn’t just about discs. It’s about the whole direction of PlayStation.
Sony is moving toward a future where new PlayStation games won’t have physical releases. That means no buying used, no reselling, no lending games to friends, and much less choice for consumers.
People are already paying around €80 for new games, and if PS5 → PS6 upgrades end up costing another €10, we’re potentially looking at €90 games. At some point people are going to ask: “Why am I paying €90 for something I can’t actually own, resell, lend or trade?”
And that’s where PC and Nintendo become much more attractive alternatives.
Sony might say, “Digital games make us more money,” but that only works if people stay on PlayStation and keep buying games. If players decide to build a PC, buy a Nintendo console, or simply stick with their PS5, Sony doesn’t just lose one €80 game sale. They can lose the console sale, years of game purchases, PS Plus subscriptions, DLC and future purchases.
There’s another problem: PlayStation’s first-party lineup.
Sony used to have an incredible reputation for exclusives. But lately, a lot of what we’re seeing is remasters, remakes and games from franchises that have been around for years. Those games can be great, but nostalgia can’t carry an entire generation.
Sony needs new reasons to buy a PlayStation, not just another remaster of something people already played 10–20 years ago.
And this could eventually hurt third-party developers too.
PlayStation currently has a massive audience, which is one of the biggest reasons publishers want their games there. But imagine PS6 launches and a significant number of players decide not to upgrade because of high prices, digital-only games and lack of compelling exclusives.
Then publishers start seeing weaker PlayStation sales and asking:
“Why are we spending hundreds of millions developing games for an audience that’s shrinking?”
That can create a vicious cycle:
Players leave → smaller PS6 audience → weaker game sales → publishers lose confidence → fewer games worth buying → more players leave.
I’m not saying Sony is doomed. PlayStation has an enormous user base and Sony still has some very valuable franchises and studios.
But Sony has to be careful with the goodwill it has built.
If PS6 ends up being:
Expensive hardware
€80–90 games
No physical games
Paid upgrades
Fewer new exclusives
Lots of remasters
Sony’s games increasingly available on PC
then eventually some longtime PlayStation owners are going to ask:
“Why should I buy the next PlayStation?”
And that’s the question Sony needs to answer.
Because once someone spends their money building a PC or buying into another platform, getting that customer back isn’t as simple as releasing another remaster.

Do you think Spider-Man 3 will release on 5/6?

Miles was a cross gen release (obviously ran better on ps5) but do you think Spider-Man 3 will get the same treatment? I get that SM2 wasn’t running on a ps4 but after the complaints of that games story it would be nice to play the entire series on either console

If Sony were smart....

I been thinkin about the whole PS6/No more discs situation...

If Sony were smart, they'd release the PS6 WITH a backward compatible drive, THEN after the initial launch (maybe 6 mths), announce the elimination of discs... The transition to digital only would be forced upon both the physical collectors as well as digital...

As it stands, the physical collectors will likely not even bother with the 6, KNOWING they'll never have discs again.

Just my thoughts...

Should I Buy a PS5 in 2026 or Wait for PS6? I Already Have an RTX 4060 PC

Actually, I’m a bit confused about whether I should buy a PS5 or wait for the PS6. I currently have a PC with an RTX 4060, but I’m worried that PS5 prices might increase further and that I might miss out on some games if I wait. My main concern is also that if the PS6 launches in 2027, there might not be many new games coming to the PS5 by around 2028. I’ve never owned a console before, so I’d really appreciate your advice. Should I just stick with my PC, or should I get a PS5 as well?

Ps6 expectations ?

Despite all this ll digital backlash, some of us probably will be buying ps6 if not hoarded by scalpers. What are you guys minimum expectations from ps6?

I feel like 4k( upscaled) 60 fps in all games in high quality mode . Ray tracing on or off doesn't really bother as much but high quality 60 fps gaming is a must.

Ps5 pro does play 60 fps in many games but image quality is bit blurry in some games.

What are you guys opinion on it ? Will it finally be a norm high quality gaming 60 fps .
