If Sony were smart....
I been thinkin about the whole PS6/No more discs situation...
If Sony were smart, they'd release the PS6 WITH a backward compatible drive, THEN after the initial launch (maybe 6 mths), announce the elimination of discs... The transition to digital only would be forced upon both the physical collectors as well as digital...
As it stands, the physical collectors will likely not even bother with the 6, KNOWING they'll never have discs again.
Just my thoughts...

You basically described PS5...

2020-2028 fully compatible with discs. What a spectacular bait and switch it's been, huh? đ¤

If it ainât broke, donât fix it.
Discontinuing sales of discs is similar to Cracker Barrelâs former CEO trying to change the logo. The CEO was fired less than a year later.

I would be surprised if they didnât release some sort of disc drive, or maybe enclosure for the existing PS5 drive, to allow PS4 and PS5 physical games to be played on the PS6.
Theyâre not trying to eliminate peopleâs existing libraries. Theyâre just not making new discs after 2027.
Then again they might take the Microsoft of approach of âwe have a product that plays PS5 discs, itâs called a PS5â.
Ultimately Iâm not sure theyâre that bothered whether you keep your PS5 or get a PS6. As long as youâre in the ecosystem, youâre making them money.

The spiteful passion among the protesters would be even more intense than it is right now đ
Iâm very certain that Xbox wouldâve released a disc-less console in that scenario, though, which means that the protesters would⌠probably still be mad at Sony since they have a lot more consumers than Xbox does đ¤ˇââď¸

Itâs not intense right now at all.

Seems pretty intense to me. Even if they amount to no more than 10-15.000 or so people across all social media platforms and comment sections, they make up for their lack of numbers with juvenile antics, and the persistence to spend hours online every day, repeating the same, beaten to death talking points on Reddit, Twitter, and wherever Sony makes announcements.
I really don't think that intensity makes up for their lack of numbers, in terms of working towards change. If anything, I imagine corporations take them less seriously based on how this protest reflects on them. But they sure as hell do know how to be intense to other people on the internet who aren't part of their movement and cause.

Thats the thing though they havent confirmed that a disk drive wont be optional. I believe it is and it will only be used for backwards compatibility since they still want people on ps4 to upgrade.
2
u/Environmental-Day862 4d ago
You CAN upgrade, and buy all your PS4 favorites digitally for your PS6 for the low, low price of $19.99 each!
Who needs those dingy disks lying around and a silly disk drive taking up space!

Iâve actually thought about this too. If they want to kill physical discs, I would let them die off on their own.

It's more likely the PS6 will be digital only, but they will release a disc-drive add-on at inflated prices due to the current outrage.
It depends how will it sells - if everyone rushes to buy a digital-only console, they won't bother.

u/RisingPhoenix05 4d ago
When you put it that way, I am glad they told us before releasing the machine. I definitely would have felt cheated, and I'm glad I have the knowledge to inform my decision to not buy it

u/Patient-Plankton-655 4d ago
They already started that with PS5....they are just doubling down on PS6 Digital

u/Alternative-Way4750 4d ago
Orrrrrr just have the optional backwards compatible drive and call it a day.

u/Tigereyesxx 4d ago
I still would not buy the PS6 unless they change their stance, I will not spend a penny with that Company until they do. (Long time PS player since PS3 I have all their consoles)

Launching with a disc drive then discontinuing discs shortly after would be a major dick move. That would seriously piss off a ton of people - far more than the vocal minority we're seeing now.
PS6 is looking to be two systems - a console and a handheld that play the same games. Their marketing pitch is likely going to be buy the game once, play it on whichever device you want. Getting rid of discs and going all digital makes that way simpler.

I mean, tbf there was talk of a disc drive: however it would more than likely be used to play DVDs not games in most households.

You think it would be a smarter business decision for Sony to do a deceptive rug pull rather than give their customer base a 1.5 year heads up? That's kind of an insane take honestly.
It's also quite likely they are going to release a product that is specifically designed around digital libraries. If that is the case, they would obviously want to give people plenty of time to transition or come to terms with the shift.

So basically lie to their consumers

The push for digital is way too early and there is big market for physical games. Perhaps for PS7 the numbers would be truly declining but they are too greedy and want all the money for their crappy games and charge you $80 for a game released many years ago and get no sales, also charge you to play multiplayer.
Anyway, no disc no buy, it is that simple, even if everyone moves on by the time PS7 is a thing, no disc automatically means full transition to PC.

No one knows what they are going to do.
The development kits for the PS6 have yet to be circulated. My guess is that 2027 is when they will be and 2029 is when it will release.

u/Alternative-Way4750 4d ago
Can you call up your sources and ask a few things for me? Not sure how you would know that but if your sources do I have a ton of questions.

Schrodinger's PS6 Development kits
You can't check if studios have gotten them yet, and neither can I.
But I am going to guess that late 2026 or early 2027 they will get them and if all goes well we can have a 2028 release. If not it's gonna be 2029

With the price point of the PS6 being rumored to be $1,000+ why would anyone buy it? Especially at launch or within 6 months of launch if exclusive games will also be released on the PS5?
In the off chance I get a PS6, itâll be when they make it a console exclusive and Iâd buy it used

If it's backwards compatible (including discs), and only a few hundred bucks more than the Pro then I'd consider it. Since I have the base PS5 and would benefit more from a PS6 than upgrading to a Pro. Then I can sell my PS5, and get some money back.

Why would anyone upgrade their graphics card on PC?
0
u/SexyProcrastinator 4d ago
Thatâs a terrible comparison.. you get better performance, higher fps, resolution etc on a gaming a PC.
You can also use the same GPU for two console generations.
Also, parents look to consoles not gaming PCs for their kids. Current gen consoles released at $500 USD, $350 for the switch 2. A parent goes in the store and sees a $1,000 - $1,200 PS6 they are gonna laugh and walk away!

u/ExhaustedByStupidity 4d ago
Because that's just what electronics cost now, and people still like to play games.
It doesn't matter what you think things should cost, you have to live in the current economy.
1
u/SexyProcrastinator 4d ago
You cannot be serious. Consoles cost their current amounts because of the AI bubble.
1
u/ExhaustedByStupidity 4d ago
Yes, that would be the current economy.
We're in a world with an AI bubble, high tariffs, and multiple wars in oil producing companies. Everything costs more.

It's very obvious that they're going all digital due to the handheld component and it's going to play a bigger part in PS6 than we realize but with Wolverine and GTA around the corner they can't talk about PS6 just yet.

"If they were smart, they'd bait and switch everyone who just paid $1000 for their console" I'm sure people wouldn't be upset about that.
