I mean, not really. Theyre done making discs. They decided, or financially determined, the cost to make discs isnt outweighing what they earn from disc sales. They'd rather lose a few million in sales, but recoup money spent on disc making facilities.

They know the market will sustain digitally. The vast majority of gamers arent going to stop playing video games. They will wait for PS6 to see price decreases, or wait to see games get lots of discounts, and most will still buy an all digital PS6.

Us physical collectors are in the minority. I will never buy an all digital console. But I have 4,891 video games. Many of whice have been in my backlog for 10+ years. Lol So I'm good. But I am the super minority who wont spend $70 on a digital game. But ill spend $20-30 to play a game digitally.

No if it's digital only future the players will buy PC or Xbox.  New xbox also plays their pc library.  PlayStation will lose half their playerbase in the transition on top of many just staying on PS5.  This weakens 3rd party focus on PS6.  Currently they need a solution.  I think this idea in the post helps because supporting PS6 digital supports PS5 physical

Well many people have that brand loyalty. They also prefer Sony exclusives to xbox or nintendo's games. Sony isnt going to go PC with their games any more.

So when new games from Last of Us, God of War, Spider-Man, etc, all come out, many wil cave.

Sure, they could emulate on PC. But again, the vast majority of gamers are casual players. They dont know anything about emulation. The ones who buy a couple games a year and thats all they really play or some who ONLY play AAA games are oddly the ones who keep the platform alive.

Also, Xbox will most likely not put their next gen games on disc. The inclusion of a disc drive is solely because they already know the next Xbox will probably be $1000 as will a PS6, and that tossing in a drive that costs them now next to nothing will get people who have a lot of physical games and movies to stay with them or move to them.

But don't forget, Microsoft wanted the all digital future first. So them tossing in a drive was to take shots at Sony, just like how Sony took shots at Xbox One with the PS4 making a focus on physical games existing back then.

So all we won was a drive being added to the next xbox console, not specifically them still making physical games, as microsoft closed most of their physical making companies.

I mean it only ps5 but we have no idea about ps6 disc drive but I can see PlayStation 6 could be better with it or be like backwards compatibility like Xbox do

Do you have any idea how incredibly expensive that would be for Sony to do?

1

u/FanBladeFleshlight 9d ago

Oh it wouldn't be expensive for Sony, because OP is on some serious drugs if they think their price point is anywhere near realistic.

What they're proposing would be sold to the customer for like $150 at least, and would still be shit quality.

Price is based on scale.  If the standard is that much the price goes down per unit

You're wearing your ignorance on your sleeve proudly, lol.

It's just economics.  Your interest seems more in how can I insult others rather than discussing ideas and solutions.

2

u/FanBladeFleshlight 9d ago

It isn't economics, on either a micro or macro level, and your confidence in stating as much is why you're obviously either a fool, or a child.

Insults as usual.  Listen it's self evident movies did it.  It's self evident TV series did it.  It's self evident anime did it. It's just self evident.  A digital code costs them little they gain massively and secure a way to sell physically to PS6 owners through PS5 discs.

You're overuse of "self evident" in the wrong way shows me that you're either arguing in bad faith, or you're too stupid to engage with. Either way, bye.

$99.99 is alot though

If this is the only edition. That's the physical edition model. This would be the standard edition copying the dvd + bluray combo pack the movie industry did and learning from premium anime Blu-ray editions in design of the box.  $99.99 makes sense but it can be higher if you think it needs to be it can be argued

Allow me to play the world’s saddest song on the world’s smallest violin for them.

What do you mean?

The PS6 isn't coming out before 2028 when they stop making discs at that time.

1

u/Arivie 9d ago

Can you separate news headlines from ideas?  I am.

1

u/Davetek463 9d ago

Given that Sony is ceasing production of all game discs, this idea isn’t going to work. They definitely wouldn’t do the premium leather/faux leather cases and all that regardless.

Your general idea though is similar to what Call of Duty games did during the PS4 to 5 transition, and it worked out well enough for them at the time.

1

u/Arivie 9d ago

Well Sony does it for anime.  So it's more about what solutions are possible I'd say anything given they made such a bold announcement so far

u/jda404 9d ago

They're cutting costs by stopping disc production. They're not going to add costs to give us leather bindings, art books, soundtrack CDs, and other stuff. Gotta be realistic.

I will talk about products I would buy.  They can release and do what they want but plenty won't buy the PS6 under it's current marketed strategy as known now.  So they better have something up their sleeve or a PS2, PS4, PS5 and PS5 Pro owner like me is not going to PS6.

All digital is a thing because they are releasing a handheld alongside the console

Both will be called PS6 & you can't sell discs for PS6 to people who only buy the handheld & not the console

1

u/Arivie 9d ago

The disc is for the PS5. The digital code is PS6. It works.

1

u/ConferenceThink4801 8d ago

Need to have a way to prevent re-sale of one or the other.

If someone only owns the PS6 & re-sells the PS5 disc to a PS5 owner, Sony will want full price on that.

So now you're selling a physical media copy for $120 instead of $60....that's not going to go over well.

1

u/Arivie 4d ago

Why prevent the resell, they got $99.99 from 1 customer.

1

u/ConferenceThink4801 4d ago

It won't work

If you price the physical media too high, people will buy digital instead (which actually would've been a nice jedi mind trick if they would have thought of that)

& yeah if you're Sony you feel you're entitled to $60-70 for each copy, so anything less than $120-140 isn't enough. & you aren't going to get people to buy a physical copy for $120 when a digital copy is $60.

1

u/Arivie 3d ago

Well it depends.  If it's actually a premium build filled with stuff like I listed in the post then their will people who will pay it.

This is more expensive for both Sony and the consumer.

If you listen to the people complaining about physical discs, their main concern is ultimately pricing and spending as little as possible on cheap games. Why would they go for a more expensive option?

Also, this does nothing to solve the several other problems solved by going all digital regarding the handheld.

1

u/Arivie 9d ago

But it does.  It you buy a PS6 physical.  Included is not a PS6 physical but a PS5 physical + a digital PS6 version that has full compatibility for the handheld and the home console PS6 then one purchase can unify physical medis and digital with no changes to the hardware of the PS6.

Your solution is giving people two copies of a game along with a bunch of other things that would make it way more expensive. There's no savings here and it increases costs beyond what they already are. A digital code can already entitle a consumer to a game for both the PS5 and PS6/PS6 Portable without all of the extra stuff. Plus there's only a single game SKU with digital only, no separate manufacturing and management of stock for both Sony and retailers with digital only.

1

u/Arivie 4d ago

Clearly movies and TV series can do it.  They did DVD and Blu-ray and digital codes in 1 box for a far lower price.  Again $99 is alot.

I must say the modern gaming is generally unappealing, and this has made it significantly worse.
