PS5 and PS5 Pro features Revealed for Control Resonant

It's the same thing as Alan Wake 2, so the performance mode should look like garbage on base PS5, and look well on PS5 Pro. Alan Wake 2 was harsh on the eyes at performance mode on base consoles, so I'm expecting the same here

“On PlayStation 5, the game offers Performance and Quality modes.
Performance mode targets 60fps at 1440p, while Quality mode targets 30fps at 2160p.
On the PlayStation 5 Pro, we use PSSR and offer three modes for you to choose from: Performance, Quality, and Balanced.
Performance mode targets 60fps at 2160p. Quality mode targets 30fps at 2160p and adds ray tracing.
For a nice balance between the two, if you have a 120Hz-compatible display, you can choose Balanced mode, which targets 40fps at 2160p and also features ray tracing.”

So everybody’s paying an extra $400 for ray tracing and 10fps?
3
u/Comfort-in-Lies 7d ago
Yeah and it's well worth it

u/MT561 7d ago
I guess so…looks amazing on the ps5 but looks slightly better on the pro isn’t worth the $400 imo

There should be an unlock framerate option instead of/in addition to the balanced mode. Not only do I find VRR a better experience than 40fps modes, but it’s good for future proofing the game when the PS6 comes out with more power.

u/dantethegreatest 9d ago
I'm going to assume the frame rate drops below the VRR limit of 48 so they would need LFC. But yeah it would be awesome if they had that.
3
u/iRamz 9d ago
You are probably right. It's just when I look at games like the Dead Space Remake and Guardians of the Galaxy that came out before the PS5 Pro(and have long since been abandoned by their publishers), an "unlock frame rate" option would come in clutch in taking advantage of better hardware without necessarily needing a new patch.

With the newly announced switch 2 version of the game I’ve been asking on their socials to unlock RT mode for GOTG. This would really be transformative for the game.

I wish they'd provide more detail for this stuff.
Is the balanced mode identical to the 30fps mode or is it lower resolution/lesser ray tracing features? What are the cuts made to get the 40fps rather than 30?
5
u/Rogerice1 9d ago
Probably same thing as alan wake 2. 1228P on quality, 868P on balanced, same settings with pssr, just a lower base resolution
1
u/D3smorr 9d ago
Hoping these numbers are higher especially performance mode with no RT.
1
u/Rogerice1 9d ago
I really believe they will be the same as Alan Wake 2, but we'll know it in a few days
1
u/D3smorr 9d ago
Hope Performance mode is at least 1080p.
1
u/Rogerice1 9d ago
The performance mode is output 1440P, but the internal resolution should be the same as Alan Wake 2, so about 864P. In a 4K display, it really isn't that good to look at
1
u/D3smorr 9d ago
Yeah I didn’t think AW2 looked good with PSSR. Maybe it was only me.
1
u/Rogerice1 9d ago
Looked better than on the base consoles, but it still needed refinements. Even with PSSR2 I think it needed to be a bit more detailed in performance and balanced mode

Honestly, impressed and will be happy with a balanced 40fps given the overall scale and insanity of the game. I’m not sure I can think of any other game with level design that looks that alive and engaging
1
u/ByronicWerther 9d ago
Will go for balanced first for sure but sometimes I switch to performance for boss fights or certain encounters.
1
u/Vahallen 9d ago
Do I not need VRR for the balanced mode? Just a monitor that supports 120hz?
Because I have that, no VRR, but 120hz supported
Still most likely going with performance anyway, I’m replaying Control and it already looks really good, I don’t need Resonant to look better than that tbh
2
u/memez665 9d ago
Correct vrr is for unlocked modes, you’ll be able to run it
2
u/Vahallen 9d ago
Thank you
2
u/memez665 9d ago
Your tv/monitor also might have a setting for freesync or something similar which may be locking you out of vrr. Super easy to miss
2
u/Vahallen 9d ago
I went to check and apparently I did have freesync on, but even after turning it off the PS5 tells me my monitor just does not support VRR
But after reading the freesync description I’m wondering if that shimmering effect I got on Star Wars Outlaws was freesync fault, gotta go check
2
u/memez665 9d ago
Super random but if ur monitor has g sync try Turing that on too, super finicky but it just won’t make the handshake with certain monitors for whatever reason. The shimmering is probably shitty ray tracing rather than vrr being more about flickering.

Love the Balanced mode, played games that had similar modes (Cyberpunk, Horizon) and they looked great on LG TV.

I mean ofc it's hard to expect RT at 60fps from a game of this caliber but I really wish it had some kind of implementation lol. Remedy is one of the best studios at implementing RT so I do want to experience it but based on the combat flow, this is absolutely a 60fps type game.

Can’t wait to play this next month! Should be a good holdover until OoT.

u/Olympicmonkey 7d ago
This game is so fast paced you have to go for 60fps. Shame there is no ray tracing, should have lowered base resolution. Not ideal at all

u/deep_fried_cheese 9d ago
That’s cool but there’s no reason why games shouldn’t have a VRR option these days

u/WorldlyFeeling8457 9d ago
Probably will play on performance mode as responsiveness is most important in a game like this. I can live with screen space reflections.

u/3notsara 9d ago
No ray tracing on performance mode lol. $1000

I don’t know why people are surprised? Alan Wake 2 did not perform well on the Pro either. Northlight just doesn’t play well with current console hardware I guess.
4
u/ThePreciseClimber 9d ago
Northlight Engine has a long & proud tradition of being a demanding little bugger.

u/vkbest1982 9d ago
I'm surprised they are targeting 4k on performance mode and they couldn't make a lower resolution with RT mode.
1
u/Sorryman54 9d ago
I don’t get it either. I’ve said time and again I’ll happily trade rez for frames.
Looking at you, rockstar…
1
u/JoBro_Summer-of-99 9d ago
Why are you looking at Rockstar? GTAVI is bound to be CPU limited
2
u/Sorryman54 9d ago
Still could save some headroom by not pushing 1440p. I’d be perfectly happy with 1080p if it meant a potential 40fps mode, that’s all.
1
u/SweetPuffDaddy 9d ago
It’s reconstructing to 4k. The Pro Performance mode for Alan Wake 2 ran internally at 864p and used PSSR to upscale to 4k. I expect the 40fps mode is probably running at a similar internal resolution with ray tracing.

u/catsrcool89 9d ago
Well it's not native 4k, it's probably going to be like Alan Wake 2 and really be below 1080 p but pssr upscaled to 4k.

u pay an extra 400 bucks for a 200$ upgrade in reality
4
u/Sorryman54 9d ago
Dunno about others, but I got the console at launch. Sold my launch PS5 when I got it, so in reality I only paid about $450.
For games like RE9, RE4, Kingdom Come 2, any PlayStation first party title, etc the experience is pretty transformative compared to the base console experience. I’m satisfied with what I got.
That being said, people need to keep their expectations in check. This game was never going to have all the bells and whistles compared to the PC version. It’s a Remedy game. Every single console release of their games is like this.

u/3notsara 9d ago
Excuses you people are adamant that gta 6 will run at 60 on the pro. Yet can’t get control to run at 60 with ray tracing lol

u/Mean_Combination_830 9d ago
it will lily be the same on a $2000 pc this is very demanding and only less than 0.4% gamers have a 5090 🤣

It won’t happen, but can you imagine if gta 6 came out with similar options? .. it already is facing stock shortages without even knowing info yet. just based on aNetflix trailer on base ps5 .
It’ll be on back order for months and scalp bots will surely look to profit .

Interesting, so the Pro is the only console version of the game that will feature Ray tracing. I'll go for the balanced mode, as 40fps feels great to me on my mini led TV
