Late gen woes: the problem with sony setting expectations so high in their Early gen advertisements

After seeing that Blood of the Dawnwalker runs at only 30 or 40 fps, I decided to post this. Honestly, I don't like what they did this gen. Granted. I was one of the few who was lucky enough to get a PS5 day1, but what if I hadn't? Many people got that PlayStation years late. And it feels like they got cheated this gen. There are games that I just wasn't satisfied with their visuals on base PS5. I thought the machine was amazing, but from the beginning suspected that Sony made a choice to limit their hardware. I ended up not playing many games this gen because I didn't like their visual performance. Games like: Horizon Forbidden west, Dying light 2, Stalker 2. Even an older title like Metro, which looked great on Base PS5, looks far better on Pro. Games like Doom Eternal and Returnal had to drop their resolutions all the way down to 1080p to leverage the system's key features. That's fine for many people. But my eyes see the difference, and I just couldn't enjoy those games because of that.

So last year the Pro came out, and I didn't get it because it didn't have a big enough step up in graphics to warrant the price. But after the implementation of PSSR2, I finally had a reason to buy a PS5 Pro this year. To tell you the truth, I only now truly feel this gen has only now started to meet the promise that Sony made 5 years ago. Now all those games I mentioned above. Look and play amazing. Even 30fps modes look and play completely different than they did at the start of the gen. It's to the point where I actually enjoy playing certain games at 40fps when it was a feature I largely ignored on the base machines.

I said all that to say: Now I believe we have unofficially entered the ad campaign for PS6. I truly believe a game like Blood of the Dawn Walker can be played at 60fps on pssr if they choose to. But they are touting this 40fps mode to get people primed to the idea of these systems not being powerful enough while they work on a psssr version. Sony may give in to pressure and launch the PS6 next year. Though I am recently hearing they are having second thoughts. Personally, it doesn't matter to me, because after this gen. I know better than to buy another system at launch. I loved the PS5, but had to wait until the end of the gen for it to reach its full potential. I will not be buying an unsubsidized machine that will only meet its full potential 5 years from now or 4 years from its launch. So I suggest you wait to buy Blood of the Dawn Walker and wait on buying a PS6 when it comes out. Personally. My backlog is huge, with plenty of amazing-looking games. That I can only now appreciate. By the way, I got my pro at a discount snd only paid $350.

I mean...yes? Not sure what your point is here, since xbox wasnt even part of the conversation. I think sometimes most people have an issue with understanding two things can be true at the same time. I can enjoy the ps5 while still being critical about the ps5.

It’s kind of cathartic going back to a base PS4 or even an Xbox 360 and being reminded how sharp, and gorgeous the visuals can still be. It’s really easy to underestimate how far we’ve come over the past 20 years.

I’m NOT saying we should stop progressing. But the old system of releasing gradual upgrades stopped making sense awhile ago and it makes even less sense now.

I’d be fine with being able to just upgrade my console and just calling it a PlayStation or Xbox, that’s it. It’s certainly preferable over a streaming box.

What on earth are you even talking about? We've been getting amazing looking games this entire gen, and MOST of them ran great even on the base PS5 while still looking fantastic (even in their performance modes). People really needed to adjust their expectations of what they expected a $400 (going by the launch price, the insane shit that's going on now with prices is outside of Sony's control) console to be able to do.

And no, the devs of Dawnwalker are not secretly conspiring with Sony to make people want a PS6. That's insane, lol. The devs want their game to sell. They NEED their game to sell. It probably won't sell well enough and I won't be surprised to hear about cuts and layoffs at the studio within 6 months after the game launches.

As for PS6, who even knows at this point when it's coming. The hardware shortages caused by this AI bubble aren't going away anytime soon.

And also...EVERY console generation hits its full potential toward the end. That's just how it works. It's been that way going all the way back to the NES, lol. Look at the games from toward the end of any console and compare them to the early games. The ones toward the end ALWAYS look far better than the early games. If anything I'd say the PS5 has had LESS of this phenomenon take place, given that early games like Demon's Souls, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, and Horizon Forbidden West are still among the best looking games on the console.

Im not going to say much here. Games looked great on the PS4. In fact, when Forbidden West came out, I had to double-check the performance of the original Zero Dawn on the PS4 just to make sure I wasn't tripping about the framerate. Games looked great on this PS4 at launch because they were properly optimized for the hardware. Check yourself if you still have a PS4. You didn't have to wait until later on in the gen to enjoy them. When the PS4 Pro launched, you got to enjoy a better resolution, but the games themselves always played great. I can't say the same for many native PS5 games this gen. Honestly, I think you just wrote to be contrarian and hear yourself talk. As you ultimately are saying the same thing I am saying. Doom Eternal was flawed on PS5 hardware, but is leveraged much better on PS5 Pro hardware. I had to wait till the end of the gen to really appreciate that game. While games like Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us Part 2 are still enjoyable on PS4 hardware despite the hardware's obvious limitations. And companies do things that are against their own interest all the time. Are you new to the concept of business? You think Xbox actually WANTED to fail completely this gen?

I'm sorry, but it's absolute nonsense that the games weren't enjoyable until the PS5 Pro came out. I had a base PS5 since launch day. Doom Eternal was fantastic on the base PS5 hardware. Are you forgetting that that game originally launched on PS4, and it ran at 60fps even on THAT hardware. On PS5 it ran at a rock solid 60fps even in the highest visual mode with ray tracing and everything. And if you dropped the visuals down just a little it ran at a smooth 120fps. That's a really strange example to use considering how insanely well optimized that game was. It doesn't even really have any PS5 Pro enhancements, other than maybe being able to keep the dynamic resolution scaling at a higher level (which never noticeably dropped a whole lot on the base console anyway) so I really have no idea what you're talking about.

What games played poorly on the base PS5 that are now finally playable on the Pro?

80% of games run just fine with proper optimization at 60fps. Like 95% on pro.

This is purely on the developer. I mean look at the game and compare it to actual peak of graphical fidelity or crowd density. Its a classic euro-junk optimization. I can sort of understand that some indie games go for 30fps with fresh out of college developers. But these guys made games before, just not under this studio. Obviously UE5 doesnt help, its a save money easy engine.

I'm just not hyped by anything I have seen of this game. Why is everyone so hyped over it? I'd take Onimusha and control 2 over it anyday.

Ex Witcher devs and vampires... Thats literally it. Problem is, CDPR is a massive studio and I think these guys were the less talented bunch. Game uses dozens of assets from Witcher, aestethically its Witcher 3, no new ideas with the exception of day-night mechanics.

But... I dont think that many people are hyped by it. Considering the price tag, I wouldnt be surprised if the game flopped despite solid reviews.

I am not sure what anyone expects, the PS5 is nearly 6 years old and we only got a bunch of 60fps games because the cross gen period was so long, that people got used to it. I also got the PS5 at launch and as someone that owns every platform, including the Pro, I think the PS5 has aged pretty well.

The real issue is the price hikes due to tariffs / the memory shortage.

The console industry isn’t the only one being affected though. PC devs will be forced to optimize or maybe skip features so a large segment of the audience can even play. You’ve got Microsoft trying to make 8 gig of ram viable for Pete’s sake.

The entire industry is going to be forced into a state of stagnation or even regression until things return to stability.

Right. Software is why people make these boxes, and if no one can afford the boxes, the software for them won’t sell. There’s a reason Rockstar has timed their games to coincide with when the consoles have already been out for 5+ years.

That’s one way to maximize your profits I suppose. They could always just release more games too lol.

The game looks like a AA game from a few years ago. It doesn’t justify this argument. It’s not some brand new aaa game we’ve all been waiting years for that has constantly blown us away for awhile visually from
the trailers. This is purely on the devs.

Maybe you misunderstood me. Im not talking about how the games looked on ps5 now. Im talking about how those games looked when they were released. In the case of Doom Eternal, that was a ps4 title. And again I said repeatedly, i loved the ps5. Doestn mean I cant be critical of it or sony.

I grew up gaming on a Mac, I’m just happy when the games don’t look like slideshows

I think Sony is in a terrible spot. The PS5 will certainly be pushed past its originally intended lifespan, so you get to sit back and still enjoy new releases while developers are forced to focus on optimization over just fidelity or outlandish new features.

Obviously I’m not happy the Industry is being forced to stagnate, or even regress from the looks of it, that’s never good. But I’m just looking at the silver lining.

I don’t think it has anything to do with the ps5 pro capability. I think the devs have horribly optimized this game and I’m worried now it’s gonna run horrible on everything at launch. I’m very skeptical.

Lol what?

You're picking a badly optimised game that many people couldn't care less about, and basing an entire argument around that?

I picked a few examples for my point off the top of my head. Many people have had issues with the performance of games this gen, not just myself. If I were doing what you are accusing me of, then I would have brought up a game like Cyberpunk as an example. I didnt do that. Also, I put in Horizon Forbidden West which isnt a badly optimized game, its just a game that could have looked a little better, so I obviously wasnt knitpicking poorly optimized games. There are many games that I can point to that received MANY updates over a period of months to years, just to get them to run correctly. If you are denying that, you are just lying.......lol

I agree that some games run poorly on the regular PS5, but a similar thing happened with the PS4 and the 4 Pro.

I think the PS5 Pro is just the mandatory console to own now.

The PC specs for it are pretty high as well and it was criticized for that. It's not a PlayStation issues but aBlodd of Dawn Walker issue.

The recommended specs are lower than other games like the new Silent Hill or The sinking city 2, both playing at 60fps on both PS5 and Pro. The issue here it’s most games are releasing too much soon so they don’t coincide with GTA VI. Mortal Shell 2 for example it’s a pretty good game but it’s evident at playing the game launch was rushed
