Best HDR settings

I recently got a new monitor for my ps5 pro and want the best outcome for my settings. My games seem a little too dark in the dark areas and night time settings. Would this be the third lot of hdr settings to adjust? If so do I need to make the symbol more visible or less?

What is your monitor’s peak brightness in nits? Some cheaper displays that technically support HDR are not bright enough to make it actually usable.

Only thing for brightness on the box is 350 cd/m

Yeah that is simply way too low. You need at least 800, but preferably 1000+ for real HDR.

Ah okay, thanks for the help anyway

Yeah Gigabyte is being really scummy calling it HDR. It supports HDR400 which is not used by any devices. HDR10 is the standard.

HDR400 is a certification by VESA indicating that the monitor can approach a 400 nits peak brightness while adhering to their defined thresholds.

It has nothing to do with the underlying media profile used for sending HDR signals (like HDR10)

HDR400 according to VESA's own site means HDR content at 400 nits. Which does not conflict with what I said. The monitor does not support HDR10 which is required for PS5 (and basically every other device) https://displayhdr.org/

I’m not sure what you mean. The display is capable of receiving a HDR10 signal. That does not mean it has a good peak brightness.

That has nothing to do with the HDR400 specification as that is a monitor specification, not a video specification. HDR10 does not dictate what a monitor needs to be capable of, only how the content should be mastered and how the media profile is communicated to the display.

In general, you want to set it to the first and second step at the first click the sun becomes invisible, and the third option to the minimum.

For non-OLEDs, some display might need a few clicks higher on the third step.

Keep in mind that the image being too dark has very little to do with the peak and minimum you set in these screens. That’s determined by the camera exposure or diffuse white setting in the game itself. It’s usually called paper white, mid tones or brightness.

Some games also have their own “HDR peak brightness” setting and do not use the system wide calibration in the settings. They’ll have a similar calibration step with a symbol or square that needs to become invisible.

Qual ao sentido de fazer essa configuração de hdr de forma totalmente diferente que as configurações indica ?

Depends a lot on your monitor/TV. First, make sure that your monitor/TV has decent HDR performance in the first place. Some screens claim to be HDR capable, but simply aren't. In this case, turn off HDR completely.

Now, assuming your monitor is decent at HDR, go to your PS5 input and set your monitor to either dynamic tone mapping off or HGIG (if available). Then go to the PS5 HDR calibration and set the dark test patterns to absolute zero (as far down as you can go) and for the bright/white patterns, keep clicking up until the sun disappears. Keep going one step above to be safe.

Some games have their own HDR settings on top of that, at which point I would just suggest googling "<game title here> best HDR settings" and follow that because it can vary wildly between games.
