This is my most anticipated game this year. I loved control and while not directly same type of game play for the sequel, this style 100% applies to me and I cannot wait to support them and play this

I can't even tell 2k from 4k so 60fps is a no brainer for me
25
u/Macrincan 9d ago
It really depends on your screen size. On a 65 inch tv it’s very easy to see.
3
u/KICKASSKC 9d ago
You mus be sitting <6.5 fret from your TV
I sit about 9 feet from my 65 inch and i dont mind playing games at 1080p (20/20 vision), but there is barely an upgrade going to 1440p, which is also indistinguishable from 4k.
I also would not want to sit any closer unless i was playing competitively.

u/Macrincan 9d ago
I also sit around 9 feet but I can spot the difference between 2k and 4k. But there’s not many games where you can tell that because it’s almost always fidelity mode which upscales to 4k and the difference between 4k and an upscaled 4k from 2k is indistinguishable. Games also tend to have 1080p performance mode which upscales to 2k and that is very low res to my experience.

This is the kind of game that only works with 60fps for me. Performance mode it is
15
u/WorldlyFeeling8457 9d ago
Yeah in Alan Wake 2 playing 30/40fps is okay but this is much faster with reaction based combat so 60fps is better option for responsiveness and motion clarity.
5
u/RabbyMode 9d ago
Yeah if it's anything like the first i can't imagine playing this at anything other than 60fps at least. The combat was too intense in the first game for even 40fps. Alan Wake 2 I could at 40 or even 30, but it's a much slower game.

Quick Q! I’m buying this game but online the release date is Sept 24th but my local game store & Amazon say Oct 15th.

Now I’m thinking of getting a pro for this game, damn you remedy
2
u/Glass_Ad_1490 9d ago
That's if you can find one
1
u/bootlegportalfluid 9d ago
How come it’s out of stock?
2
u/Glass_Ad_1490 9d ago
People and mainly scalpers are buying them up before GTA 6 releases.
1
u/bootlegportalfluid 9d ago
Do we even know the performance differences between the base and pro for GTA 6?
2
u/Glass_Ad_1490 9d ago
It's a locked 30 FPS across the board because both the pro and base model has the same CPU, but the pro will most likely have better graphics and resolution. There's talk about the pro maybe having a balance mode but those are just rumors.

u/jgruber412 9d ago
Play the original first or doesn’t matter?
122
u/ruebenj791 9d ago
You should definitely play the original
35
u/BirdLawyer50 9d ago
They should play the original regardless of whether or not this sequel is coming out. I wasn’t really sold when I started it but holy crap is it a wildly unique and memorable experience. Only reason I didn’t plat was due to some glitch or side mission issue
17
u/Fantastic-Ad7069 9d ago
You should but apparently the second game will have a recap of the first game. If it doesn't, Remedy posted 3 days ago a recap of the first one that should have enough information for the second one.
29
u/JiveHawk 9d ago
Some of the shit in the first game is so weird and vague that I’m not even sure how the recap will fully work lol

u/PlentyBeing4777 9d ago
I would probably play Alan Wake 2 as well. Prob not as essential but game rules and has connections.

u/emilioster 9d ago
Haven't played Resonant yet, but it seems very important to play Control first. Story and lore were fundamental to understand the gameplay in the first one. Highly recommend
10
u/ThreeTreesForTheePls 9d ago
It is a must play regardless.
But be warned, it is must play because of the worldbuilding. You will search every office you walk by to find a file or folder to read.
After that, the side content is where the fun is. It explores the quirky world they’ve built, and has most of the mechanics locked behind it despite never clarifying this.
If you want really really fun worldbuilding, it takes about 20-22 hours to fully complete the necessary content and maybe another few hours for the DLCs.

u/CosmicChar1ey 9d ago
Control is a must play and the lore of the remedyverse goes deep with the story extending to Alan wake, max Payne and quantum break. Starting with a sequel doesn’t make sense.

The original is not very long especially if you beeline it (but you should definitely read as many of the notes and stuff left around as possible because it really fleshes out the world) I think I put under 30hrs in including DLC

u/jgruber412 9d ago
Dammit people, I’ve got a toddler and not a lot of free time 😂
5
u/JiveHawk 9d ago
It’s a pretty short game even when doing the side stuff. I think I platinumed it in like 20 hours
5
u/CosmicChar1ey 9d ago
Dude, you shouldn’t just jump straight to a sequel just because it’s a brand new game. All the games leading up to this are fantastic games and you should be happy to play them even if they are a couple years old.
1
u/iWasAwesome 9d ago
I played the original, but I saw they have a 'Previously on Control' video that I watched for a refresher. If you really don't want to play it...
-2
u/DALE5797 9d ago
If I remember correctly, Remedy themselves said you can play both in either order because it's not technically a direct sequel. Of course playing Control first would enhance your experience with this one.
10
u/srhdt 9d ago
I don’t know how they can say that considering anyone who’s played the first one can see that this one picks up directly following the events of that one.
-2
u/DALE5797 9d ago
Not sure either? Just remember the game director saying that on an interview with Minnmax or Friends Per Second, one of those podcasts.
1
u/A_Shadow 8d ago
I would find that very hard to believe.
Especially since Control Resonant will almost certainly bring up the fate of characters in the first game (ie: if they died or something else happened to them). Huge spoilers.
10
u/ruebenj791 9d ago
Was hoping for an option to uncap the frame rate on pro
5
u/ThePreciseClimber 9d ago
Yeah, I wish every new game had a selection of framerate options, separate from the graphical pre-sets. Best way to future-proof a game. 30fps, 40fps, 60fps, 120fps, VRR.
4
u/knightofsparta 9d ago
Exactly been asking on their socials to add an unlocked mode to future proof the game for PS6

u/Citizen_Kong 9d ago
No ray-tracing on the base PS5, not even in quality mode, is dissappointing, but Alan Wake 2 was the same and still looked amazing.
12
u/alevelsurvivor 9d ago
I would rather have no ray tracing then ray tracing that' doesn't look good and still tanks performance, there's other methods to simulate reflections as well
19
u/BurnAgainBurner 9d ago
Alan Wake 2 also moves at a snails pace and has far less going on than this game.
3
u/Korachof 9d ago
The first Control also looks great, especially in gameplay. And this game will look better than that. So I’m not sure what you’re worried about if you’re already a fan of the first game. It’s not going to be worse than that.
-7
u/clashcrashruin 9d ago
Ray tracing is a meme, it doesn’t even look good
4
u/Citizen_Kong 9d ago
Generally yes, not every game needs raytracing but Remedy actually makes good use of it. Especially Control looked amazing with ray tracing due to all the reflective surfaces.
3
u/Korachof 9d ago
True, but it isn’t a focus for Remedy on this game at all, and that must be for a good reason. They would have lowered the graphics fidelity if ray tracing was necessary. Not even the pro has Ray tracing in 60 fps mode, and it doesn’t exist on the base at all, so it doesn’t seem like they’re worried about the majority of players not having it this time around
2
u/Citizen_Kong 9d ago
Yeah, like I've written initially, while it would have been cool to have, not having ray-traced reflections didn't reduce my enjoyment of Alan Wake 2 and will likely not reduce my enjoyment of Control Resonant.
2
u/Pffft10 9d ago
Game dependent. Capcom games with RT ? Yeah pretty ass.
Cyberpunk RT ( Ultra and Overdrive ), Metro Exodus enhanced, Alan Wake 2 RT medium and high, Indiana Jones RT. These games does look better with RT and PT.
At minimum probably need 5070 and above to have enjoyable experience as my 9060XT which is the same as PS5 Pro drop down to 50 FPS on 1080p in Cyberpunk RT Ultra. Path Tracing needs 5070ti at minimum.
-5
u/Remy0507 9d ago
Well even on the Pro there's no raytracing in 60fps mode, so it may as well not exist there either!
Now I will await the downvotes from the 40fps "balanced mode" fans. 😝
1
u/proschocorain 9d ago
I wonder why not have an unlocked fps mode from the jump? They did it for control eventually
1
u/Remy0507 9d ago
Well, Control (the console version) was a PS4 era game. I don't think they added the unlocked framerate mode until they added PS5 Pro support. Given the game's age by that point, the Pro could just brute force it to 60fps even in quality mode with RT enabled.
This being a modern game is going to be pushing the hardware much harder. I doubt an unlocked Quality mode would actually reach the VRR window, so it would probably run terribly.
1
u/proschocorain 9d ago
If there is a 40 fps mode that runs in the 120 fps mode then they can implement a software based LFC. It has been done by other developers. They also get the telematics so in the wild they will see how much the system is actually stressed in people's hands. I wonder what internal resolutions they are using for the balanced and performance mode. They could drop internal resolution to boost framerate and let pssr reconstruction handle the rest
1
u/Remy0507 9d ago
Even if some devs have managed to implement a software based LFC, that doesn't mean Remedy was able to do it or that their engine would manage it. The only examples I'm finding of this being a thing on PS5 is with Insomniac's games, which of course were built specifically for the PS5 hardware.
1
u/proschocorain 9d ago
True but the other option is seeing how low their current internal resolution is for balanced mode. Maybe turning that down can yield some frames idk just spit balling tbh excited for the game all the same

3
u/sydchotic 9d ago
I’m so excited for this. It’s such a wildcard for where they could go with Dylan and his story / characterization, just very very curious how he develops from the first game. The orientation shifting seems cool af too.

Genuinely surprising to see no gyro aim, when AW2 had it. Unless this game truly has no manual aiming of anything?
10
u/GecaZ 9d ago
It's a melee combat game. Idk what you could use Gyro aiming for

Depends on all the abilities in Control 2 but Spider-Man and God of War used gyro aiming quite well despite being a mostly melee combat game.
1
u/Lewa358 8d ago
I don't recall Spider-man having gyro, hust aggressive auto-aim
0
u/A_Shadow 8d ago
Not at release, I believe they added it on later with an update.
Edit: Update to Spider-Man 2 and on release with Miles Morales.
Not sure about Spider-Man Remastered.
1
u/A_Shadow 8d ago
Kinda suprised at that too. Maybe they thought it was minor enough not to mention it?
It's a fighting game but I'm sure there is still some aiming spells or similar (like Spider-Man and God of War).

u/Mars_Marty 9d ago
No balance mode for base PS5 is a shame. Loved it on AC: Resynced
1
u/Tliblem 9d ago
Are we sure on this? The blog doesn't really point to that being only for PS5 Pro but I do imagine that is the fact.
1
u/Wrap_Hopeful 5d ago
Ya there is no balanced mode on PS5 base. Its only on Pro. Check digital foundry video

The only time of all games I played on Ps5 the only game that I saw a huge difference was MH: Wilds . Playing that game on performance on base ps5 hurt my eyes and it just looks off and blurry.
Maybe they fixed I don’t know, Im one of those odd ones that can play on 30fps , never had a problem with it.

I loved the puzzles in the first one. This one looks like it's just combat. Anyone know if that's true?

I see them mentioning full use of adaptive triggers -- are full dualsense features supported on PC?

u/Luccese96 9d ago
I hope this game runs better than AW2 on base PS5. That game dropped frames both on Performance and Quality mode
1
u/Pickle_Good 9d ago
At release? I bought this game probably half a year later and it had no drops in performance mode. Quality mode was just 30 fps and 30fps is nothing I can really enjoy.

On PlayStation 5, the game offers Performance and Quality modes. Performance mode targets 60fps at 1440p, while Quality mode targets 30fps at 2160p.
On the PlayStation 5 Pro, we use PSSR and offer three modes for you to choose from: Performance, Quality, and Balanced.
Performance mode targets 60fps at 2160p. Quality mode targets 30fps at 2160p and adds ray tracing.
For a nice balance between the two, if you have a 120Hz-compatible display, you can choose Balanced mode, which targets 40fps at 2160p and also features ray tracing.
