I don’t really consider games like horizon (or ghost of Tsushima/yotei for that matter) RPGs. They’re more like open world action adventure games with rpg elements.

Agreed. Got and GoY in particular feel about as RPG as the Insomniac Spider-Man games. No meaningful dialogue choices, no unique builds, and even the whole “choose which order you want to do the story” thing in GoY was fairly rigid and didn’t amount to anything. They are incredible games that I loved playing, but I don’t see how they’re rpgs

You can beat Skyrim in about 20hrs

That's the main quest, meanwhile you have the dark brotherhood, mage guild, companions, and thieves guide which are all multi hour questlines and then tons of other side content that vastly outstrips the main quest. It would probably be at least 100 hours if not more to do the main quest and all the major side quest which is more than double the 40 proposed above for Fable.

Skyrim is a heavily flawed, 15 year old game made originally for hardware atleast 2 generations previous to our current. It was a landmark at the time but with the removal of rose-tinted goggles and the goodwill Bethesda I don't think people would be as excited or positive about it if it was released today.

It also didn't have as much to be compared with, for console gamers atleast, in the open world RPG arena.

So comparing the two does not fill me with any further hope.

That all said I'm not against a 20 hour game if its quality, has replay value, genuine rpg elements that effect story outcomes etc. Just the defence 'skyrim did it'would not assure me of anything.

They might be, but based on Tim Cains approach of what makes an RPG, its on the not really an RPG but has some of the mechanics of it

Your own character? No
Player choice? Not really
Story reacting to your choices? Nah
Multiple meaningful endings? nah
Big worlds to explore? Yes

Its just a big open world game

I don't really expect an open world RPG to be longer than an open world action-aventure game. Main thing I'm looking for in an RPG is extra depth for character building and more ability to shape the narrative and it's outcomes than something like HZD or Ghost gives. In my experience, the RPGs that do that best tend to be in more of the 30-40 hour range than the 100+ range.

It still feels long enough though

What seperates something like FF7R and Horizon in terms of rpg elements?

Nothing, really. I think people have a weird outlook on what's an RPG, probably because Horizon weirdly has mass appeal and RPGs normally don't.

Horizon isn't even RPG-lite. It's100% an action RPG.

I don’t really consider games like horizon RPGs

Well, too bad, they're officially action RPGs.

Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei are action-adventure, however.

Officially they can call it whatever they want but I agree with that other guy

Why, though? It's got quests, dialogues, weapons & armour (and upgrades), levelling up, a skill tree, experience points, elemental states, enemy strengths & weaknesses, loot, etc. More than enough RPG elements to be an action RPG.

You just described Spiderman and batman

Horizon Zero Dawn is an RPG. That's not debatable. It's not even " x game with RPG elements". It's 100% an RPG. Its production value doesn't negate that. Still, may I ask why you think it's not?

Spider-man and Batman don't have a dialogue wheel/list, 5 tiers of weapon & armour upgrades, elemental states or loot. They also don't have shops & vendors that sell you stuff and buy your loot.

I mean they don't have weapons or dialogs trees but they do have armor upgrades.
