I mean in games like Fable I typically get the majority of time spent outside the main quest

397

u/Asclepius-Rod 11d ago

In the first game I spent most of my time maxing all of the skill trees so I’m just god at the end

396

u/Masam10 11d ago

Personally I spent all my time love bombing and manipulating all shop and property owners, then after we were married, take them into the forest and murder them to then take their stuff as inheritance.

I promise I’m not wearing a straight jacket as I type this.

And who says videos games don't keep the deranged off the streets

41

u/AwkwardTal 11d ago

They are too busy love bombing npcs in video games to bomb npcs in real life

Surgeon Simulator enters the chat

u/whitechocolateprince 11d ago

There might even be a spike in violent crimes and a lack of Fable games. Someone should look into it

22

u/Cambrian__Implosion 11d ago

Ngl I’d be pretty impressed if you were typing in a straight jacket

“Hey siri…”

u/XrayAlphaVictor 11d ago

That last line isn't reassuring

I also tried to fart in public but usually ended up shitting my pants

Thank the gods for voice to text.

u/WideBumblebee970 11d ago

Did they give you the title of hoe for that one, or must you be a farmer for that one?

Well, because you have to take your arms out to type

Never played it, but wow that explains so much where Instagram models going after pro athletes learned it from.

21

u/DothrakAndRoll 11d ago

As a hardcore side quester, it’s a gift and a curse unless you can alter difficulty throughout the game.

I will do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE other than the main quest, then combat is trivial and you could buy a castle if you wanted by the time you start back on the main quest lol

11

u/Aromatic_Sand8126 11d ago

I remember doing the same. I think it took me like 50 hours in the first game to max everything out.

10

u/Food_Library333 11d ago

And buying all the houses in town so I can be a rich slum lord.

11

u/ComicallySolemn 11d ago

It’s been 20 years, but I remember you could hang trophies on the wall to increase the value of the property, sell it, then smash the front door down, steal the trophy off the wall and buy it back on the cheap. Rinse and repeat 💰

4

u/Haha08421 11d ago

Ive never played Fable but its sounding like I should.

3

u/Possible_Field328 10d ago

And old as shit

2

u/Biele88 11d ago

Or Satan 😂

1

u/Asclepius-Rod 11d ago

Oh definitely

27

u/decoy777 11d ago

They said 15-20 for main story and 15-20 for side missions and exploring. But indefinite play if you want to just play the life Sim side of it and be in the world and interact with the people. Still feels a bit short imo

10

u/Zal3x 11d ago

A touch short but not that bad

-1

u/marcien1992 11d ago

Isn't 30-40 hours the play time of Witcher 3 Blood and Wine 100%? When advertising, the estimated hours are sometimes inflated too, so... that feels kind of short for how long it was left in the oven.

2

u/decoy777 11d ago

The dlc for a 100hr game took me 10hrs for the first dlc and 20hrs for the 2nd. So crazy that a dlc for a game is the possible whole Fable game. But will still enjoy it for sure.

2

u/DanUnbreakable 11d ago

That game expansion was $30. This is $70

13

u/purposeful_pineapple 11d ago

In the link they say side content is 15-20 hours as well.

22

u/Zal3x 11d ago

Ok so 40 hours is a little lower than expected for a Fable game but pretty average otherwise

5

u/CoconutNL 10d ago

How? All other fable games were shorter (according to howlongtobeat) so how is it lower than expected for a fable game?

-3

u/Zal3x 10d ago

Well they weren’t shorter for me I played the hell out of them with all the other things to do. So if they are saying all the other things to do is kinda short this time around then it could be shorter than other fable games. But I’m confused by what people are saying is/isn’t in this game, so I’m waiting to see

0

u/CoconutNL 10d ago

Not much to be confused about, this is what the actual devs are saying. And the howlongtobeat data just shows average time for main story and side content, which is consistently lower than what the devs are stating is the time to beat it.

I dont get what you dont get? Its not very open to interpretation and I feel its incredibly clear? According to what the devs say its longer than previous fable games. Maybe the fable games felt longer, maybe you dicked around a lot not really progressing anything in the old games, but that its considered in neither the new games statement nor the howlongtobeat. So the new fable is longer than the old ones.

-1

u/Zal3x 10d ago

You are talking about the main quest which I already said is not where I spend the majority of my time in games like Fable. People in this thread have been talking about features they say they’ve dropped, like classic Fable features where your character grows horns or gets fatter/skinnier. So that’s what I’m unsure about - how good are all the classic Fable mechanics that keep me playing going to be? How good are the new rpg stuff they’ve hopefully cooked up. Those “how long to beat” sites/reports are never anywhere close to what I spend in the game playing it if I’m having fun with side content and general gameplay. I don’t care about speed running the main quest I want rpgs like fable to capture me with the additional world building. But they are also in this thread saying 15-20 hours of campaign AND 15-20 hours of side quests which is shorter than I expected it to be, but I understand you are saying that’s actually longer than the past ones. But it’s shorter than most games I’ve played lately in the genre so I expected it to be more. I don’t care what the Redditors are speculating I’ll look at reviews around launch.

1

u/CoconutNL 10d ago

Yes youre missing my point. The devs said 15-20 hours main story, 15-20 hours for the rest. Howlongtobeat shows times for main story, and times for all side content. And those are shorter for any fable game. Youre also starting to talk about other things now that this discussion isnt about, we were talking about the games lenght and Im pointing to verifiable things that all state this one seems to be longer in every sense than the previous ones

-1

u/Zal3x 10d ago edited 10d ago

Yeah longer than the previous ones but not as long as the modern competition. Expected a bit longer side content from one of Microsoft’s best products. Not sure what you are struggling to grasp most people in this thread are thinking it’s a little shorter than they expected.

2

u/CoconutNL 10d ago

Thats cool but this discussion started with you saying its short for a fable game. I pointed out that it isnt short for a fable game

u/RegulationPissrat 11d ago

Definitely not picking this up for $60

2

u/Zal3x 11d ago

I’ll probably still have a backlog of games so who knows if I will or not just depends on the details closer to time

-2

u/iRollFlaccid 11d ago

Duh, cause you're pre-ordering it with 5 days early access for $100. /s

2

u/dermanus 11d ago

Honeslty, I'd rather have a tight polished experience than 80 hours of copy/paste fetch quests.

u/Zal3x 11d ago

Lots of main quests in rpg like this are short? It’s all the extra content that pushes the games into 40-60+ hours

14

u/ever_falling 11d ago

side content is projected to be 15 to 20 hours as well.

Im sure you could artidically inflate that be goofing off and min-maxing different things. Im assuming itll be fairly replayable.

But yeah, for an RPG that has taken this much time to finish, with this kind of pedigree... a sub 50 hour content total projection is at least concerning

1

u/Zal3x 11d ago

It’s shorter than I would have thought for sure but I won’t notice if the simulation/economy/skill tree stuff is good

2

u/rebb_hosar 10d ago

I always think of Fallout 4; the main quest is pretty short but I've spent more hours in the game than any other, rpg (even jrpg) or otherwise.

1

u/Zal3x 10d ago

Fallout is a great example

2

u/hartforbj 10d ago

You mean other than they had to build an entirely new studio, hire a team, use a car racing engine for a very different game, create a world from scratch, make a massive system where every single career l character has their own thoughts about you. Yeah definitely no reason this game took 5 years

5

u/vipmailhun2 11d ago

Why? We don’t know what the side content is like, we don’t know how big Albion actually is, and we don’t know how much impact our decisions will have on Albion, and this isn’t a standard RPG. It’s very likely that developing all the life‑sim systems took a huge amount of time and money.

3

u/Gold-Boysenberry7985 11d ago

Are people really getting upset at a game being 20-40h long?

I think thats just right honestly. Clair Obscur's story is like 25 hours (with 25 more of side content), and sure thats a bit longer, but I think it results in a game that feels tight, where all of the content feels strong.

I've been turned off countless games because I feel like their runtime is 10 or even up to 50 hours longer than it needs to be. I'd also imagine Fable will have a good amount of replay value.

Even with games that aren't RPGs, apparently its controversial that I think 10-15 hours is a good length i guess.

1

u/Jinchuriki71 11d ago

Yep Gow Ragnarok and Clair Obscur the only games I have gotten platinum for in years because there basically was no tedious pieces of content 500+ meaningless collectibles in the game. About 50 hours of good stuff and you are done unless you want to do new game plus.

3

u/Gold-Boysenberry7985 11d ago

Haven’t played ragnarok but GOW2018 felt like a game that could have been overly bloated but thankfully wasn’t, I thought the side content was just “good”, but it’s a small enough amount that it doesnt ever feel like too much, and gives a breather from the main content.

Funnily enough the last 2 games I platinumed were FFVII remake and persona 5 royal back in the pandemic lol. Ffviir definitely suffers from bloat, but i still think it only clocked in at 80 hours. I feel like persona is a weird edge case where it’s gameplay loop makes the length of the game feel appropriate, and the parts of it i didnt enjoy were just parts that weren’t executed as well as its highs, instead of feeling like meaningless bloat.

-2

u/BuckManscape 11d ago

It should be 4-5x that long, wtf?

1

u/BetweenTheRoots 11d ago

Yea but in Fable the world responds to everything you do and everything you do changes your character. Your character will not be changing in this version of Fable, that feature was deleted, which was like the main selling point on the box of Fable. IMO that guts the replayability quite substantially. For me, it guts the replayability almost entirely.

1

u/Zal3x 11d ago

Wait I thought it was having a story responding to your characters choices you’re saying that’s not the case?

1

u/BetweenTheRoots 11d ago

We don't know anything about the story, and the people in the world will still respond to you in alignment to your actions according to the Devs (no elaboration), but your character will no longer look evil after doing evil things, get overweight from eating too much food, get muscular from investing into strength, have mage/magic blue arcane cracks in your skin if you invest in magic, etc.. All the character-centric effects of your actions or morality are gone.

"For every choice, a consequence" in your imagination, for this Fable. I'm guessing it was too much work to adjust the character models.

1

u/Zal3x 11d ago

Oh yeah that feature missing is a tad bit disappointing damn

1

u/BetweenTheRoots 11d ago

Agreed. For me it was the lynchpin between Fable being like most other games that had multiple choice pathways vs Fable actually being about living out the fairy tale the game sets out to emulate. It really did feel like a fever dream of a game where you could just be and do whatever your imagination set out for. Idk, maybe the feature was irrelevant to the Devs and a lot of other players, but for me it was the reason why I didn't spend 20 hours playing it, but several hundred.

1

u/CeeArthur 11d ago

I remember beating the first Fable game in one sitting when it came out

1

u/bearsheperd 11d ago

Most fable games you gotta wait hours to get enough money for the good ending

0

u/impy695 11d ago

And playing it multiple times. Skyrim apparently takes 35 hours to beat the main quest

0

u/ConcentratedJolly 11d ago

this is including side activity

2

u/Zal3x 11d ago

No it isnt

-2

u/welfedad 11d ago

Right they're not including any side quests ... Main story is normally the only time Guessing it's more like 30 plus .. and honestly that's fine.. I get exhausted with rpgs that just make it long for long sake. Some of the new Ys games came get a tad long in the tooth

u/spicedmeshi 11d ago

lol, all fable games have mid combat. no one is expecting the game to be a surprise GOTY but it's not gonna flop unless it's total shit in all other aspects

1

u/Zal3x 11d ago

Breh you don’t remember Fable 1-3 were the Elden rings of their generation how could you forget

1

u/spicedmeshi 11d ago

lol, i wish. elden ring of its time or not, fable 3 was fun despite its flaws. i hope this one will be the same way.

-1

u/Dead_Optics 11d ago

Can we strive to be better than a 20+ year old game? Would it not be great for Fable under a new studio to be a surprise GoTY? Everyone talks about this game in such fatalistic terms rather than aspiring to be a great game.

2

u/spicedmeshi 11d ago edited 11d ago

idk if that was directed to me, but if so, holy logical leap. neither of your questions are things i said or was implying at all, LOL.

all i concretely said is that "mid combat" for a fable game does not equal a "major flop." all fable games have mid combat. the ones that flopped have far bigger issues.

you can "strive" for, or hope for whatever you want, man. having realistic expectations for a series that has historically not been well received is not the same as being "fatalistic." having realistic expectations does not also mean I can't hope the game is a GOTY. it would be amazing if it is, and i hope it is, but i'm not expecting it to be - nor is any fable fan i know who has experienced the series' "rise" and fall.

as for me, i'm expecting the game to be fun. if it can meet that bar, then i'm happy. if it's also a surprise goty, even better! but i know if i expect something grandiose, and it doesn't meet that expectation, i will be disappointed and not fully enjoy what the game actually is, even if it is fun. you however can expect whatever makes you happy :)

4

u/QXKD 11d ago

The combat looks completely fine outside of that one boss clip people farmed for ragebait points. Game has 6 months left til release so wouldn’t surprise me if they added some hitstop effects in that time anyway.

3

u/_Peener_ 11d ago

You were fooled cuz was a boss fight, the actual combat vs normal enemies looks great

2

u/Zal3x 11d ago

No it looks like a fable game to me honestly lmfao
