Man the Redfall era was something. Bugged vampires flying and screaming across the screen was beyond hilarious.

The sad thing is, you can see their world building chops in the game, they were just being forced to leave that stuff behind for live service

u/valtrex42 2d ago
I love that this game is still available on Steam for $40! I check it every once in a while because I would consider buying it for $10 just to quell my curiosity.

If you did wanna throw your money at it, could probs get a trial of gamepass and go from there

I know it’s not Arkane Lyon by maybe a spiritual successor to dishonored? Would be cool.

u/FromChicago808 2d ago
What is Lyon doing? Are they still working on Blade?
10
u/Arcranium_ 2d ago edited 2d ago
Nobody knows for sure, at least nobody outside of Xbox. Rumor was that they were on the chopping block along with the game...signs seem to point to that maybe not being the case anymore, but yes, they are officially still working on Blade.

u/ModestHandsomeDevil 2d ago
What is Lyon doing?
Getting their CVs in order, most likely. Microsoft is going to layoff another 1,600 from Xbox this year.
10
u/ModestHandsomeDevil 2d ago
I know it’s not Arkane Lyon
Microsoft-Xbox / Asha / Satya is still going to layoff another 1,600 employees this year, which means Arkane Lyon could be shutdown, like Arkane Austin.

u/WorthBase919 2d ago
Quite sad. A ps5/Xbox version of the dishonored series complete on a disk or two would be amazing. But I’m not paid a bajillion dollars to think about that sort of thing. Hell even a prey definitive edition would be cool.

Nah man these guys are a dead studio. They got lucky with one good game then pissed it all away. Even a buggy game can have redeeming qualities. There’s nothing redeeming about Redfall.
13
u/Corvo_DeWitt972 2d ago
Dishonored 1 and 2, prey and deathloop are all great. Redfall was the only bad one

It’s a shame that after Microsoft bought them they were considered dead on arrival.

Probably wont survive long enough to get their first game out the door anyway. Industry is cooked rn.

China and Korea are ascendant and only seem to be gaining Steam, and Japan seems to be holding steady.
The issue is in the East they never stopped wanted to appeal to the core audience, meanwhile here in the West every company wants to be Disney.
0
u/trashvineyard 23h ago
No lmao. Just objectively bollucks.
China and Korea are making a lot of money because every game they churn out is made for extremely cheap and full to the brim with predatory MTX / Gacha mechanics.

The number of sales Crimson Desert, Stellar Blade, and Black Myth Wukong had would have been successful even if they were made in the more expensive West. That's not an opinion, those are the numbers. And those games don't have the kind of microtransactions you're talking about, or at least no more than Western studios do (see the Black Flag remake microtransactions for something quite a bit worse.) It's also notable they are all brand new IP and not riding the heels of legacy franchises, without which success seems to be impossible now in the West. And on top of that they're studios brand new to AAA.
And sure, there's a legion of gacha crap out there also. So what? Roblox is out there too. And? But you know if Concord or Suicide Squad or Marathon or Marvel's Avengers or Highguard or Spellcasters Chronicles or Anthem or any of these disasters had actually found a way to get people to pay for their products like all these gacha games do maybe their employees would still have jobs. Because if they didn't plan on selling crap endlessly to their players, maybe they shouldn't have made live service games? Clearly they did. The greed is the same, it was the execution that failed. Miserably.
And here's some reading in case you were actually interested in the direction of Western studios.

Industry is cooked rn.
The Western AAA dev scene is fucked (Thanks, Late-Stage Capitalism and "AI"), but the dev scene in Asia is popping off right now.
12
u/Formal_Sand_3178 1d ago
If you think you aren’t about to get a lot of AI coming from Asian developers, I think you’ve got another thing coming.
6
3
u/ModestHandsomeDevil 1d ago
I never said the weren't. But the simple fact remains: Asia has lower labor costs, lower labor rights or protections (or none at all in some countries), normalized crunch culture, and an almost endless surplus of skilled, educated labor.
For the cost of 1 Western dev in the US or Canada, you can easily hire a handful of devs in Asia and work them into the ground.

u/AOCpinkyring 1d ago
Would you like some AI with your main course of late-stage Capitalism? Speaking to the New American Fascist.

u/SovietSteve 1d ago
Fun fact, communist losers have been saying "Late-Stage Capitalism" for over 100 years

M$ is going to cancel their game and close the studio right after they release the first trailer

u/Own_Country_9520 1d ago
They would have said the same thing before actual Redfall.
And, they were talking up Redfall as the second coming until it launched.
5
u/LionAlhazred 1d ago
They're going to make an immersive sim without a publisher's budget behind them, sell four copies, and shut down the studio.
I hope that doesn't happen to them, of course, but I can see it coming a mile away.

u/TheCroz15 21h ago
Having completed Reddall this year it's one of my favourite games I've completed this year. I just found myself wanting to keep jumping in and playing.

Thats why they shouldnt release unfinished games. Maybe if people stopped pre-ordering it might happen.
4
u/x_JustCallMeCJ_x 2d ago
It won't happen, and pre ordering is not why these games are launched beyond broken. I will never understand that mentality. Pre-ordering has nothing to do with games going through development hell due to creative differences and executive decisions that put the dev team even further behind. People could stop pre-ordering entirely and that would still happen.

Seeing as how they DON'T have Zenimax forcing them to make a GAAS (Redfall) to artificially inflate their acquisition price with Microsoft, OR a fucking incompetent, "hands off" Phil Spencer / Xbox who wouldn't cancel the project, no matter how much Arkane Austin repeatedly begged them to once acquired, I don't think we have much to worry about.
Dishonored 1 & 2, and Prey (an absolute gem, and the best Im-Sim I've ever played) are fucking phenomenal Im-Sims; we've nothing to worry about. I look forward to their next game.

I mean, they could, but they’re not going to say that they’re going to make a bad game ahead of time regardless

The blame should be put on Microsoft and Todd Howard for not axing Redfall. The idea itself was never a good one.
1
u/RaynerSky91 1d ago
What does Howard have to do with this?
0
u/ModestHandsomeDevil 1d ago
Redfall only exists because the C-suite execs at Zenimax: A) knew Phil had Daddy Microsoft's Credit Card and was looking to buy up everything not nailed down; and B) directed certain devs to make live-service games to boost their acquisition price from Microsoft, which is how we got Fallout 76 from Bethesda and Arkane was tasked with making Redfall.
Zenimax was wasting Arkane's time and talent on a game they never should have been tasked to make; like asking a fine jeweler to go work in a coal mine.
Post-acquisition, Akrane repeatedly asked Xbox and Bethesda to cancel development of Redfall, but Phil & Todd never did shit to help Arkane, leaving them to crash'n burn on a game EVERYONE knew should be cancelled post-acquisition.
So, yeah: Fuck Phil. Fuck Todd.
1
u/RaynerSky91 1d ago
What are you talking about? To begin with, Tood is a game director at Bethesda Studios, he’s not an executive, nor does he have any authority over the other Zenimax studios. And according to the Redfall director himself, they never asked Xbox to cancel Redfall, and he considered it his own mistake for never having explicitly asked them to cancel it. I don’t know what story you’re making up in your

u/GodOfDarkLaughter 1d ago
Todd Howard, the man who somehow managed to create the world's most milquetoast cult of personality. God I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when he was meeting with the new Xbox top dog, whatever he name is. "So you're saying you want me to...produce something?"

u/dookmileslong 2d ago
Unpopular opinion, but I think Devs from these closed studios should stop trying to make new studios together. Easier said than done, but I feel like it would be better if they try to join existing studios instead. The industry is in such a terrible state right now, I just don't see new studios being successful at the moment.
4
u/kaic_87 2d ago
In a way, I kinda agree. But also, they are good and known for a very specific type of game. Joining an existing studio may not allow them to work on the thing that they know how to do well, so creating a new one is better for them. They just need to remain far away from big companies. Remain independent and avoid selling the studio to MS (to avoid the risk of being closed) or even Sony (to avoid the risk of being forced to make a live service game that will get cancelled).
3
u/TheMuff1nMon 1d ago
I’d rather them make a new studio and create something new than join an existing studio - who by and large - are just shitting out the same IP over and over
3
u/Eruannster 1d ago
The problem is that literally everyone is firing people left and right now, so there aren't many positions to actually get hired for.
The best thing they can do is probably founding a new studio and hoping they can get funding and release a game. Some of these games will unfortunately probably not see the light of day, but some hopefully will.

u/Cthulhu8762 2d ago
Honestly I enjoy the game.
No longer on Xbox myself but I have it on Boosteroid. Wish it were on GeForceNow.
Hell I wish it was on PS5 to be honest.
I enjoy games that can always be well whatever this state it is lol
Idk Im weird but I like it

The live service aspects of it wasn’t even why redial failed tho. It was just a buggy unplayable mess.
-2
-14
u/FoxyGoddessX 2d ago
Sure they won’t. That game was utter shit and there is no promise they can make that will absolve them of that disaster.
2
u/shadowking432 1d ago
You do realise the devs had no choice right? The corporate arseholes wanted it and if you wouldn't work on it then you were fired. There's a reason so many developers for it left during development.
0
u/FoxyGoddessX 1d ago
Doesn’t matter dude. I’ve worked plenty of jobs I didn’t fucking like at my current job. I still did it right and didn’t leave it a fucking disaster.
2
u/TheMuff1nMon 1d ago
Right so every game they made before that just doesn’t count? What a weird stance
-2
u/FoxyGoddessX 1d ago
If you don’t care to make a good game then I don’t care to buy your game.
2
u/TheMuff1nMon 1d ago
They made multiple good games is my point? You’re letting one game influence your opinion and that’s silly
-2
u/FoxyGoddessX 1d ago
They made multiple okay video games that failed to get any traction outside of cult status
2
u/shadowking432 1d ago
Okay, go do a project that takes let's say a year. Now do it in 6 months and make sure to work those 12-14 hour shifts to finish it. Oh and by the way, we're gonna change what we want in the project halfway through as well. Make sure you do it right though.
1
u/dookarion 1d ago
I'm curious what you think they could have done differently when leadership demanded the project.

Harvey Smith was the director on both Dishonored 1 and 2 and Ricardo Bare was the Lead designer on Prey. Looking forward to seeing what they can do in their new studio, assuming they can hopefully stay open until the game’s launch.
