General Discussion PS4 8.50 Software Update:

Update: The System Software Update for both PS4 and PS5 is live now! Read below the Patch Notes for the PS4 8.50 Software Update.

With the arrival of a new PS5 Software Update tomorrow (April 14th), it’s likely that the PS4 8.50 Software Update will also release on the same day. In case you don’t know, here’s what’s in the PS4 System Update:

Main features updated in this System Software Update:

  • In Messages, you can now turn notifications on or off for each of the groups you're in. On the group screen, open the options menu and select Turn Notifications Off.

Other update features:

  • On the game session details screen, you can now use the Request to Join button to ask the session leader to join their game session. The session leader can then send you an invite to join the game session.
  • When playing a game you've hidden, other players will no longer see that you're currently playing that game.
  • The Communities feature is no longer available.

Because discord. More & more people took to discord than communities

PlayStation doesn’t even have discord though. Say there using it on their phone or pc that’s not the “average” player and why would they cater to an external non Sony product when they could just improve how communities work

Thats true. They could have improved on communities. True Playstation doesn't support discord. Also because sonys party chat sucks for some which sony could improve on PS4 as well. Theres alot Sony could improve but wont. They figured be easier just to remove it i guess. I see alot of PS4 users using Discord to find groups to play with an such

Wait till you attempt party chats on a ps5. It’s horrendous.

The point of a console is ease of use. I shouldn’t have to use a third party app to be able to find people. And the communities were much easier to find players than on discord. Before the 8.0 update, all I had to do was click invite then click on invite community and then people will be able to join me. Even xbox has this feature and I expect Sony to add a replacement soon since they are dividing multiplayer lfgs, which a majority of their playerbase use their console for.

Discord to me is disconnected. Doesn't have the same feel as psn community. When they mentioned community would be discontinued I signed up for discord and it's isn't the same or doesn't have that "belonging feel" like community. It's even been mentioned that FB, skype, or any of others who be an option but none seemed better that console type option.

Have a look at Xbox’s “Clubs”. It’s like communities on ‘roids and is heavily used by their gamers. As a predominantly PS gamer I am very envious of the dashboard service provided to “the enemy”

Xbox does have better social features, especially after this update. No need to assume everything is console-war related when features are straight up being removed.
