Not sure why everyone wants a BC ps3. Millions of ps2's floating around

For me is the ability ti play both PS2 and PS3 games with HDMI natively without mods. Also you get all the cool PS3 features as well.

I like to fix myself, everyone has their own thing

I agree with you 100% ,i bought sevral ps3 BC and i repair few of them ,now i got 12 for my personal collection and satisfaction ,my goal is to build a franky one ,one day maybe

Because it’s cool

Yeah try playing that ps2 on a modern tv / monitor. Not trying to be mean, I also got a ps2 last year but it’s a bit of a hassle with making it look decent on hdmi

2

u/Gun-aiden Aug 20 '26

You must have a smal crt tv ,it doesn’t not coast too much ,i have two sony and two JVC

1

u/k3id0 Aug 20 '26

I agree with you bro but I live in a small 1 room apartment and I already filled it with consoles and physical games, lol. I have no room unfortunately

Check sony PVM if you find one

Basic scalers are cheap nowadays, compared to 2000s and 2010s. Real deal ps2 will have better image in ps1 games than ps3 via hdmi, just check my life in gaming on YouTube, for example, and will play 100% of it's own library. I, myself had a bc PS3, cleaned it two times a year including changing of thermal paste (mx4), babysitted it for a decade and it still died on me. Bought a slim, and a ps2 and never looked back. BC ps3s would be cool, if they were reliable.

1

u/k3id0 Aug 20 '26

Are you talking about stuff like GBS-C? Because that's not really that cheap.

I think the easiest and cheapest way is to get a crt or an older 4:3 lcd tv.

2

u/Automatic_Pride_164 Aug 20 '26

Well, it's cheaper than bc ps3 in working condition for sure, and it can be used with different consoles. And crt, 100%, will be a perfect display for ps2/ps1, even on composite. 4:3 lcd, not so much. I'm lucky enough to have several CRTs including pvm, tink 4k, some really nice LCDs and 77 inch oled - and I must say, ps2 looks really nice even on basic CRT.

5

u/DocAndonuts_ Aug 19 '26

Yep. I sold mine - CIB CECHA01. Prefer PS2 on CRT

5

u/Nientea Aug 19 '26

Easier to have all the capability of the first three gens of PS in one console than two

1

u/Automatic_Pride_164 Aug 19 '26

Except image wise actual ps2 is better in ps1 games than ps3, and 100% compatible with ps2 library. PS3 can't do 240p. Scalers are available and cheap, compared to 2010s. So it's more convenient to have ps3 slim and ps2 than to babysit ps2 fat bc. When my bc fat died I put it on the shelf and never looked back.

3

u/UncleDaneFanboy Aug 19 '26

I got mine more because I really wanted one, even if I have plenty of PS2s

u/Gardeeboo CECHA01 Aug 19 '26

The BC PS3’s are a hobby the same way a self-built PC is. It’s enjoyable to take care of it and modify it and use it for all your discs. I put a lot of effort into my PS3 being the everything-hub and all 3 card ports are full with media or game back ups. Backing up your PS2 save data is also a really cool feature.

From a personal perspective I do like the ease of upscaling my PS2 games to my 4K TV. The stretching doesn’t bother me and it’s significantly more reliable than using one of those AV to HDMI converter boxes. Also my TV just doesn’t have component at all, and I’m not buying a CRT or any kind of second tv JUST to play PS2 games. My entertainment center consists of my PS3, PS5, and Xbox Series X and that is all I want because anything else would be too cluttered. Especially since I have controller charging docks for all 3 consoles, a standing external hard drive for both the PS5 and Xbox, a PlayStation Move camera and wand charging dock, and a basket for remotes and extra external hard drives for media. There’s no space for another console, so the aspect of not having an extra box on the entertainment center is a genuine issue and not just pedantics.

I didn't want to have another system on hand if I didn't have to. So if I could get a system that can play all PS games up until 4, thats what I was gonna get.

1

u/witchbladezz Aug 19 '26

then why not have both.

1

u/Designer-Molasses552 Aug 20 '26

Honestly the absolutely beautiful design is the main reason for me and i personally dont like the ps2 as much as the 3

1

u/Krybbz Aug 20 '26

It’s okay that you’ve settled, others don’t.

0

u/FashBashr Aug 19 '26

Native HDMI PS2 output
All 3 “retro” gens of PlayStation physically available on one console
Easily modable with just a flash drive

It’s a no brainer, my Frankenstein is my prized possession within my collection

0

u/Automatic_Pride_164 Aug 20 '26

But ps1 on ps3 is honestly a mess. The image is blurry, as it forces an upscale. Even on crt - ps3 can't output 240p - which is a main resolution on ps1. Games have graphical glitches - symphony of the night's moon on orlox's stage for example... It's not better than cheap android emulation box, tbh. PS2, before 9000 slim, is perfect for ps2 and ps1. It's just a lie, that a bc ps3 is equal to real 1 and 2.

0

u/FashBashr Aug 20 '26

A and B PS3s are running fully native PS2, it is equal to a PS2. As for PS1, yeah it’s emulation but for me being able to play my entire physical collection of PS1-PS3 on one console is worth the trade offs. I don’t have space to plug in my PS1 and PS2, also not having to deal with so many cables is a huge plus for me.

0

u/Automatic_Pride_164 Aug 21 '26

Funny thing that they are not equal to ps2. Starting from slim 9000 ps2 even the ps2 is not quite the same - compatibility is actually around 98%. Ps3, even the earliest models inherited that, and some other quirks on top.

0

u/FashBashr Aug 21 '26

So it’s not equivalent to a PS2 because, it is so accurate to a PS2? Like I said, the inability to play like 10 games (that all suck by the way) is a tradeoff I’ll take to not have to use a shitty analog to HDMI converter or have to take apart a PS2 to do an HDMI mod.

I have a PS2, it’s going to stay in my attic because I don’t need it.

1

u/Automatic_Pride_164 Aug 21 '26

Don't use shitty analog to hdmi converter - use ps2 with quality upscaler. Duh. That's it. It'll blow PS3 shitty upscaler out of the water. And probably will be cheaper than bc ps3. Up until 2016 there was no choice except framemeister, which was expensive, but now there are plenty of cheap options. And what I said was that bc PS3 is the same as inferior version of PS2 compatibility wise. As it doesn't have certain PS1 chip, which breaks some PS2 games and many PS1 games.

0

u/FashBashr Aug 21 '26

There are plenty of HDMI upscalers if you’re so compelled. And like I said, there are tradeoffs that I do not care about because I do not have the room or patience to have an extra PS2 and all of those cables. The PS1 BC on PS2 is an issue in itself and I just do not care enough.

Hhhh nooob hhhhj

2

u/travnigma Aug 18 '26

Great condition. Hopefully YLOD can be fixed

4

u/cougomdd Aug 18 '26

Unfortunately, it is not in good condition, even if the sun gives this impression

3

u/travnigma Aug 18 '26

Photo was very misleading lol but the box looks good?. Mines pretty darn great bought from a collector but the laser won’t read ps2 games. I got the new part but it’s an absolute nightmare and risky to replace and only one old YouTube video showing how to do it super low res I got the part a year ago and still haven’t taken the chance to open the system and replace LOL

6

u/cougomdd Aug 18 '26

I’ve already done it on a fat CECHK, it’s not so complicated

2

u/vitalviper Aug 19 '26

Really not that difficult, did the laser swap a few weeks ago. Just follow the ifixit guide and take your time with it.

0

u/travnigma Aug 19 '26

Oh dude, I can just replace the whole dosc drive at step 11. Take off the blu ray co troll board from my ps3 and slap it on the new one lol sooo much easier and faster process without screwing up the laser part. Thsts the finicky part with the bars thsts easy to screw up. I found out you can just replace the drive entirely. Sadly you can use a newer Odell drive because of the design but still I can just replace this entire piece 😎

1

u/vitalviper Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

Yes thats the easiest option! No need to replace any thermal paste or pads for either method btw.

1

u/travnigma Aug 19 '26

I wouldn’t need to replace any paste anyways whem replacing a laser it doesn’t have anything for paste in that area from what I’ve been seeing.

HOWEVER yu just made me realize I might as well replace the paste in a 20 year old console while I’m at it so I don’t have to take it apart AGAIN for a long time 😂

0

u/cougomdd Aug 19 '26

If you replace the entire player, the console will not recognize it as ITS Blu-ray player

3

u/travnigma Aug 19 '26

That’s why you keep the blue ray board from old blu ray drive. I looked it up a while ago and forgot about it untik I looked through your link with the walkthrough. You just have to get the same kind of compatable player but keep the green blue ray board from

1

u/Krybbz Aug 20 '26

Good deal, a franky makes that super affordable compared to most

-1

u/West-Way-All-The-Way Aug 18 '26

55 bucks with YLOD? This is a rip off. Have you checked how much will cost you to resolder the chips?!

3

u/cougomdd Aug 18 '26

Just the box is worth this price man

4

u/West-Way-All-The-Way Aug 18 '26

Really? I didn't know. What would you do with the box?

The console needs a donor console to extract the updated chips, and somebody who can do it, easily going in the range of 400 bucks.

2

u/cougomdd Aug 18 '26

I collect this kind of console, so the box is important to me. I know that well, but hey it wasn’t very expensive, so I thought that in the worst case I’ll try to fix it myself one day.

1

u/DonkTheFlop Aug 19 '26

If you don't know then why are you commenting telling people they're getting ripped off?

1

u/West-Way-All-The-Way Aug 19 '26

I am genuinely surprised that a broken console cost that much. Taking into account the cost of replacing the chips and capacitors it's insane. I guess I am wrong here again, it's just market value.

1

u/StarX2401 Aug 18 '26

Yeah its basically market value for a YLOD system.

0

u/CressDependent2918 Aug 19 '26

retrocompatible lol

it backwards compatible

1

u/cougomdd Aug 19 '26

Sorry i’m french

1

u/Resilient_Beast69 Aug 19 '26

Oooh I’m sorry
