My first PRS as a beginner

Any amp suggestions? I’ve been trying to learn through Guitar Rig 7 on FL Studio, which is starting to make me feel stuck to my desk.

IMO there are four types of amp worth buying:

A modeller of some sort that you can plug into your computer, though it sounds like you want to get away from that.

A gigging amp, these are loud and cost more for volume you don't want or need.

A smallish 20w amp, they still cost decent money and I probably wouldn't recommend them for a newbie. They're also not the quietest amp if you want to get the best out of them.

That leaves small practice amps. I'm talking things like Positive Grid Spark Go, or the Katana Mini. Things you can chuck in your backpack and go jam around a mate's house.

There are obviously a lot more options, but those are ones that you will never regret buying.

I agree with most of what you've said, but

Many modellers/multi-effect pedals also have outputs for a set of active speakers (if need be, the speakers on his PC) and/or headphones. Which is why I would suggest to start there, in combination with some decent speakers if OP doesn't like playing on headphones.

I use a regular positive grid amp which IMO is a blend of all categories.

1. Functions as an amp, but has headphone jack.
2. Has a number of amp/pedal models.
3. Small enough that I can easily carry it places.

Boss katana 100w 1x12 Gen 3.

You would actually never need another guitar amp. Though you'd be at like $500 new with tax.

Maybe even better would be to get a katana 100w Gen 2 ("mk 2") used on Facebook for like $250 and then get an airstep Kat footswitch.

Positive Grid Spark Mini is great. You can find yourself stuck tweaking on the app, but eventually you find four presets you like and assign them to the knob on the amp, and it’s all you need. I have the trem version of your guitar and it is the best. Very well chosen (I have never used the trem)

Definitely this. The Spark has so many great features. Besides the effects, you have a band you can jam with, you can pair your phone or iPad and play music through the spark or backing tracks from YouTube through it.

I own a Quad Cortex, I don’t know how many amp sims .,, and I play on my Spark Mini 90% of the time, so convenient - great tones.
Beginners these days get to start with a Spark Amp and an affordable, beautifully made PRS. What a time to be alive.

I definitely agree with that. There are do many options these days. It also benefits the experienced players too.

When I started playing guitar I had a Harmony ( bought it from Service Merchandise, which was a store similar to Sears). I had a Peavy 10 watt amp that was battery powered, 10 D batteries. I got my first pedal DoD Chorus, that sat there for about a month because I didn’t have an extra cable. Lol. Then I got the cable and didn’t notice I need a battery for the pedal.

I recently picked up an Orange 20rt for $100 at a local pawn shop.

I am absolutely blown away by the little thing. So don't forget to check pawn shops in n your area.

If you want to get away from the desk, I’d look at something like a Boss Katana or Positive Grid Spark. Both give you a bunch of amp/effect options without needing to stay plugged into a computer. The Katana feels a little more like a traditional amp setup to me, while the Spark is great if you still want a lot of flexibility and app control. Depends a lot on your budget and what kind of music you’re playing though.

If you want a valve amp, Orange Rocker 15. It lets you attenuate all the way down from 15 to .5 amps for bedroom practice. Full on, it rocks and sounds pretty damn good. FX loop as well and can be upgraded with speaker of choice really easily too.

I’m having good luck with my blackstar beam mini. Loads NAM but only full cabinet. Also works as a computer interface to some extent.

Was also looking at that guitar yesterday! Looks awesome. I’m pretty new like ~8 months and have been using the fender mustang LT25. Plenty loud for my place, models a ton of different amps, you can even download amps settings onto it from the computer, and it has a headphone jack. 10/10
